kern heat transfer book: Kern's Process Heat Transfer Ann Marie Flynn, Toshihiro Akashige, Louis Theodore, 2019-06-05 This edition ensures the legacy of the original 1950 classic, Process Heat Transfer, by Donald Q. Kern that by many is held to be the gold standard. This second edition book is divided into three parts: Fundamental Principles; Heat Exchangers; and Other Heat Transfer Equipment/ Considerations. Part I provides a series of chapters concerned with introductory topics that are required when solving heat transfer problems. This part of the book deals with topics such as steady-state heat conduction, unsteady-state conduction, forced convection, free convection, and radiation. Part II is considered by the authors to be the meat of the book, and the primary reason for undertaking this project. Other than minor updates, Part II remains relatively unchanged from the first edition. Notably, it includes Kern's original design methodology for double-pipe, shell-and-tube, and extended surface heat exchangers. Part II also includes boiling and condensation, boilers, cooling towers and quenchers, as well as newly designed open-ended problems. Part III of the book examines other related topics of interest, including refrigeration and cryogenics, batch and unsteady-state processes, health & safety, and the accompanying topic of risk. In addition, this part also examines the impact of entropy calculations on exchanger design. A 36-page Appendix includes 12 tables of properties, layouts and design factors. WHAT IS NEW IN THE 2ND EDITION Changes that are addressed in the 2nd edition so that Kern's original work continues to remain relevant in 21st century process engineering include: Updated Heat Exchanger Design Increased Number of Illustrative Examples Energy Conservation/ Entropy Considerations Environmental Considerations Health & Safety Risk Assessment Refrigeration and Cryogenics |

kern heat transfer book: An Introduction to Mass and Heat Transfer Stanley Middleman, 1997-10-30 This text is the outgrowth of Stanley Middleman's years of teaching and contains more than sufficient materials to support a one-semester course in fluid dynamics. His primary belief in the classroom and hence the material in this textbook is that the development of a mathematical is central to the analysis and design of an engineering system or process. His text is therefore oriented toward teaching students how to develop mathematical representations of physical phenomena. Great effort has been put forth to provide many examples of experimental data against which the results of modeling exercises can be compared and to expose students to the wide range of technologies of interest to chemical, environmental and bio engineering students. Examples presented are motivated by real engineering applications and may of the problems are derived from the author's years of experience as a consultant to companies whose businesses cover a broad spectrum of engineering technologies. |

kern heat transfer book: Applied Chemical Process Design F. Aerstin, G. Street, 2012-12-06 Development of a new chemical plant or process from concept evaluation to profitable reality is often an enormously complex problem. Generally, a plant-design project moves to completion through a series of stages which may include inception, preliminary evaluation of economics and market, data development for a final design, final economic evaluation, detailed engineering design, procurement, erection, startup, and pro duction. The general term plant design includes all of the engineering aspects involved in the development of either a new, modified, or expanded industrial plant. In this context, individuals involved in such work will be making economic evaluations of new processes, designing individual pieces of equipment for the proposed new ventures, or developing a plant layout for coordination of the overall operation. Because of the many design duties encountered, the engineer involved is many times referred to as a design engineer. If the latter specializes in the economic aspects of the design, the individual may be referred to as a cost engineer. On the other hand, if he or she emphasizes the actual design of the equipment and facilities necessary for carrying out the process, the individual may be referred to as a process design engineer. The material presented in this book is intended to aid the latter in developing rapid chemical designs without becoming unduly involved in the often complicated theoretical underpinnings of these useful notes, charts, tables, and equations. |

kern heat transfer book: Fouling Science and Technology L. Melo, T.R. Bott, Carlos A. Bernardo, 2012-12-06 The fouling of heat exchangers, reactors and catalysts remains one of the most urgent problems facing the process industries. Over the past ten years there has been limited research and investigation into the underlying mechanisms which give rise to this problem. For convenience, particularly in heat exchanger technology, the mechanisms involved have been subdivided into different subject areas. It is often the situation that individuals or groups of workers have concentra ted efforts in one or two of these specialist areas and there is a need to integrate the ideas across the whole spectrum of the subject. In addition, topics such as adhesion and surface phenomena have not been properly taken into account up till now in the assessment of the fouling processes. For this reason it was considered essential that the recognised experts from around the world, who are actively concerned with research, development and design in the fieId, should meet and exchange ideas and experience. Such a meeting was held at Alvor, Portugal, in May 1987, sponsored by the NATO Advanced St~dy Institutes Programme. In order to obtain a common basis for the work of the Advanced Study Institute, the whole technological field was reviewed right from the basic concepts to the frontiers of present knowledge. Each invited contributor was asked to make an overall presentation covering his or her area of expertise. |

kern heat transfer book: Direct-Contact Heat Transfer Frank Kreith, R.F. Boehm, 2013-11-11 to increase the use of direct contact processes, the National Science Foundation sup ported a workshop on direct contact heat transfer at the Solar Energy Research Insti tute in the summer of 1985. We served as organizers for this workshop, which em phasized an area of thermal engineering that, in our opinion, has great promise for the future, but has not yet reached the point of wide-spread commercial application. Hence, a summary of the state of knowledge at this point is timely. The workshop had a dual objective: 1. To summarize the current state of knowledge in such a form that industrial practi tioners can make use of the available information. 2. To indicate the research and development needed to advance the state-of-the-art, indicating not only what kind of research is needed, but also the industrial poten tial that could be realized if the information to be obtained through the proposed research activities were available. |

It also covers in detail the background materials such as units and conversions, dimensional analysis and dimensionless groups, property estimation, P-V-T behaviour of fluids, vapour pressure and phase equilibrium relationships, humidity and saturation. With the help of examples, the book explains the construction and use of reference-substance plots, equilibrium diagrams, psychrometric charts, steam tables and enthalpy composition diagrams. It also elaborates on thermophysics and thermochemistry to acquaint the students with the thermodynamic principles of energy balance calculations. Key Features : • SI units are used throughout the book. • Presents a thorough introduction to basic chemical engineering principles. • Provides many worked-out examples and exercise problems with answers. • Objective type questions included at the end of the book serve as useful review material and also assist the students in preparing for competitive examinations such as GATE. |

kern heat transfer book: Two-Phase Flow Heat Exchangers Sadik Kakaç, Arthur E. Bergles, E. Oliveira Fernandes, 2012-01-22 Two-phase flow heat exchangers are vital components of systems for power generation, chemical processing, and thermal environment control. The art and science of the design of such heat exchangers have advanced considerably in recent years. This is due to better understanding of the fundamentals of two-phase flow and heat transfer in simple geometries, greater appreciation of these processes in complex goemetries, and enhanced predictive capability through use of complex computer codes. The subject is clearly of great fundamental and practical importance. The NATO ASIan Thermal-Hydraulic Fundamentals and Design of Two-Phase Flow Heat Exchangers was held in Povoa de Varzim (near Porto), Portugal, July 6-17, 1987. participating in the organization of the ASI were the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Clean Energy Research Institute, University of Miami; Universidade do Porto; and the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Eng ineer ing, and Mechanics, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The ASI was arranged primarily as a high-level teaching activity by experts representing both academic and industrial viewpoints. The program included the presentation of invited lectures, a limited number of related technical papers and discussion sessions. |
