juergen teller behind the scenes: Juergen Teller , 2021-09-14 Annotated in his wry, inimitable voice, Juergen Teller presents over three decades of fashion and editorial work in a groundbreaking volume that combines photography, collage, and candid (and often humorous) autobiography. One of the most influential photographers working today, Juergen Teller creates images that are instantly recognizable. Raw, often overexposed and displaying a spontaneity and candor, Teller’s visual language reflects a measured yet uncompromising sense of rebellion. This book includes landmark editorials with nearly every important fashion label of the era and celebrities from Kate Moss to Charlotte Rampling and Kurt Cobain to Yves Saint Laurent. Outtakes of iconic shoots (including infamous ones with Courtney Love, Cindy Sherman, Marc Jacobs, Victoria Beckham, and Björk) that have never been published will be included in this volume. Teller first broke into fashion in 1996 with a magazine cover of a naked Kristen McMenamy with the word Versace scrawled across her chest. Since then, his fashion photography has been featured in all the international Vogues, AnOther Magazine, Index, Self-Service, W, Details, Purple, i-D, and 032c, among others. A highly sought-after cult hero and the author of many iconic campaigns, Teller has collaborated with the likes of Helmut Lang, Raf Simons, Hedi Slimane, Nicolas Ghesquière, Phoebe Philo, Vivienne Westwood, Miuccia Prada, and Isabel Marant, and shot every season of Marc Jacobs’s ready-to-wear collections from 1998 to 2014. |

juergen teller behind the scenes: Picturing the Woman-Child Morna Laing, 2021-01-28 The childlike character of ideal femininity has long been critiqued by feminists, from Mary Wollstonecraft to Simone de Beauvoir. Yet, women continue to be represented as childlike in the western fashion media, despite the historical connotations of inferiority. This book questions why such images still hold appeal to contemporary women, after three, or even four, waves of feminism. Focusing on the period of 1990–2015, Picturing the Woman-Child traces the evolution of childlike femininity in British fashion magazines, including Vogue, i-D and Lula, Girl of my Dreams. These images draw upon a network of references, from Kinderwhore and Lolita to Alice in Wonderland and the femme-enfant of Surrealism. Alongside analysis of fashion photography, the book presents the findings of original research into audience reception. Inviting contemporary women to comment on images of the 'woman-child' provides an insight into the meaning of this figure as well as an evaluation of theory on the 'female gaze'. Both scholarly and accessible, the book paves the way for future studies on how readers make sense of fashion imagery. |

juergen teller behind the scenes: Enjoy Your Life! Juergen Teller, 2017-06 One of the world's most sought-after photographers, Juergen Teller bridges the worlds of fashion, advertising, art, music and celebrity with an unmistakable mix of irony, honesty and anti-establishment flair. This magazine-style book captures Teller's visual universe to date. Employing portraiture, still-life and landscape photography, Teller's highly intuitive work exposes clichs, champions the everyday, and recasts traditional notions of beauty. Stripped of the glamor of the fashion world, his sitters often find themselves in unexpected, sometimes disturbing contexts where their true selves are revealed. Fascinated by his youth and upbringing, as well as by the role of the photographer today, autobiography is also a strong force in Teller's candid, often humorous, and inevitably endearing photos. This beauty ideal is everywhere. You can't escape it--TV, wallpaper, posters, billboards, magazines. They put on these crazy perceptions about what people should look like. It's really shocking the way everybody is striving for this one thing, this ultimate beauty, but what is it? Juergen Teller |

In Latinx, Carribean Fragoza traces Laura Aguilar's influence on queer artmaking. Joiri Minaya remixes postcards from the Dominican Republic to unveil the fantasy of tourism. Christina Catherine Martinez profiles Reynaldo Rivera, who chronicled 1990s-era Los Angeles nightlife. Yxta Maya Murry considers three Latina curators and writers influencing how photography canons are made today. Collectively, their images cast a greater net for the multiple ways of seeing Latinx people, Tompkins Rivas notes of the issue's photographers, creating a visual archive whose edges are yet to be defined. |
juergen teller behind the scenes: Juergen Teller and Nicolas Ghesquière: I Just Arrived in Paris Juergen Teller, Nicolas Ghesquière, 2014 On 5 March 2014, Juergen Teller photographed the eagerly anticipated first collection by Nicolas Ghesquière as the new artistic director of Louis Vuitton. In his inimitable style, Teller visualizes the designer's ambitious manifesto for the luxury house: Louis Vuitton is a land of contrasts. A time-honored and noble legacy is kept alive by a yearning for discovery and exploration. Coursing boldly and imaginatively through the decades, Louis Vuitton refreshes the world of fashion with an untiring ebb and flow of retrospective and fresh perspective ... This initial collection tells a tale of expertise made possible by innovative techniques. It focuses on the highlights and remains open to interpretation. Living proof that today's 'timeless' was at one time seen as innovative. In this collection, the timeless is now. This book is a collaboration between two of the most influential vanguards working in contemporary fashion. Teller's candid, unadorned aesthetic perfectly complements the restrained luxury of Ghesquière's fashion, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the rich history of Louis Vuitton. |
juergen teller behind the scenes: Modern Look Mason Klein, 2020-05-05 A fascinating exploration of how photography, graphic design, and popular magazines converged to transform American visual culture at mid-century This dynamic study examines the intersection of modernist photography and American commercial graphic design between 1930 and 1960. Avant-garde strategies in photography and design reached the United States via European émigrés, including Bauhaus artists forced out of Nazi Germany. The unmistakable aesthetic made popular by such magazines as Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue—whose art directors, Alexey Brodovitch and Alexander Liberman, were both immigrants and accomplished photographers—emerged from a distinctly American combination of innovation, inclusiveness, and pragmatism. Beautifully illustrated with more than 150 revolutionary photographs, layouts, and cover designs, Modern Look considers the connections and mutual influences of such designers and photographers as Richard Avedon, Lillian Bassman, Herbert Bayer, Robert Frank, Lisette Model, Gordon Parks, Irving Penn, Cipe Pineles, and Paul Rand. Essays draw a lineage from European experimental design to innovative work in American magazine design at mid-century and offer insights into the role of gender in fashion photography and political activism in the mass media. |

juergen teller behind the scenes: STEIDL-WERK No 23: MASAHO ANOTANI Masaho Anotani, 2016 The main idea behind 'STEIDL WERK N°23' was to create a paper object never seen before. A joint project, it stems from the exclusive collaboration between Theseus Chan s WERK Magazine and Steidl Publishers for this particular issue of 'WERK. Chan s and Steidl s common interest in the analogue, in art and books, and their addictive fascination with the smell of inks and the texture of paper combines in their shared philosophy of subverting technology by creating work that has a strong human imprint. Accordingly, this magazine issue features a young Japanese artist, Masaho Anotani, whose complex collage-like drawings and sometimes surreal, sometimes disturbing compositions are made almost entirely by hand.0The design was inspired by a tightly taped, neatly formed package sent to the magazine by Anotani containing his printouts an idea that found its way into the book itself which comes as an entirely sealed entity. The title Deformed is part of the idea to create a misshapen book that evolves along the process of coming into existence. Building on the concept of clashing, of creating and destructing the final product, something new a chaotic bricolage of printed junk is born. |
juergen teller behind the scenes: Robert Doisneau: The Vogue Years Robert Doisneau, 2020-03-03 From high-society balls and fashion shoots to portraits of artists and scenes from urban life in France, this handsome volume—which features an open spine binding so that it lays flat to show off the photographs to their best advantage—showcases Doisneau’s best photographs for Vogue Paris. Celebrated photographer Robert Doisneau worked for Vogue from 1949 until 1965, illustrating a postwar France filled with a renewed zest for life. His little-known images of haute couture featured models like Brigitte Bardot and Bettina, who he photographed in the studio and out on the streets. He chronicled the members of the café society in their stately homes and at glamorous costume galas, dancing the night away. Best known for his humanist approach, he masterfully captured scenes from everyday life—from the grace of a wedding procession over a footbridge to the petulance of a child impatient for cake. Doisneau’s photographs captured the spirit of the era and featured celebrities like Karen Blixen, Picasso, Colette, and Jean Cocteau, as well as jazz musicians, movie stars, and humble craftsmen at work. Legendary Vogue editor in chief Edmonde Charles-Roux’s personal homage to the photographer—who was her friend and colleague—offers intimate insight into the man behind the camera, as complex and beautiful as the people and places he immortalized. |

juergen teller behind the scenes: Wardrobe Crisis Clare Press, 2018-02-20 Who makes your clothes? This used to be an easy question to answer it was the seamstress next door, or the tailor on the high street—or you made them yourself. Today, we rarely know the origins of the clothes hanging in our closets. The local shoemaker, dressmaker, and milliner are long gone, replaced a globalized fashion industry worth $1.5 trillion a year. In Wardrobe Crisis, fashion journalist Clare Press explores the history and ethics behind what we wear. Putting her insider status to good use, Press examines the entire fashion ecosystem, from sweatshops to haute couture, unearthing the roots of today’s buy-and-discard culture. She traces the origins of icons like Chanel, Dior, and Hermès; charts the rise and fall of the department store; and follows the thread that led us from Marie Antoinette to Carrie Bradshaw. Wardrobe Crisis is a witty and persuasive argument for a fashion revolution that will empower you to feel good about your wardrobe again. |
juergen teller behind the scenes: The Araki Effect Filippo Maggia, 2019-10-08 Araki's career in full, from the portraits of the early 1960s to city scenes and tender tributes to his wife Araki is known the world over for his controversial erotic portraits of Japanese women, often bound using the kinbaku (Japanese bondage) technique. A unique figure in contemporary photography, he has always found creative inspiration in his daily existence, without making any distinction between his personal life and public and professional practice. The Araki Effect offers a broad overview of his career: from the first series from 1963-65, Satchin and His Brother Mabo, to Subway of Love, a large collection of images taken in the Tokyo subway between 1963 and 1972, the year he also made Autumn in Tokyo, which recounts the autumn he spent wandering through the city in the twilight hours. These are followed by Sentimental Night in Kyoto, less known than the famous Sentimental Journey, both tributes to his wife, Yoko; Balcony of Love, Death Reality, Tokyo Diary from 2017, and one of his latest collections, Araki's Paradise from 2019. Born in Tokyo in 1940, Nobuyoshi Araki worked at an advertising agency in the 1960s, where he met his future wife, Yoko Araki, the subject of his now classic volume Sentimental Journey. Araki's oeuvre spans erotic portraits of women, still lifes, images of plants, scenes of everyday life and architectural photography. He has published around 400 books, shown in many international exhibitions and his work is part of important collections worldwide. Araki lives and works in Tokyo. |
