Zakharov, 2012-12-06 In 1979, a historical meeting took place at the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Kiev, USSR, where 48 American Scientists, specialists in nonlinear and turbulent processes, met for two weeks with their soviet counterparts. This meeting pro vided the unique opportunity for USA and USSR participants to directly interact personally and scientifically with each other. This interaction was of great impor not only for the individuals involved but also for the science of nonlinear tance phenomena in general. At the end of the meeting, it was agreed that this exchange should continue, and it was decided to have the next meeting in the USA in 1981. Unfortunately, due to the political situation at that time, the second meeting in the USA never materialized. However, in 1983, the Soviet scientists organized in Kiev a second Workshop. This second meeting was again quite successful. Similar meetings, with growing success were organized at Kiev in 1987, and 1989. It should be noted that 405 participants from 22 countries participated at the fourth Kiev workshop on Nonlinear and Turbulent Processes. The Chainnan of this workshop was V. Zakharov, who has also been a co-chainnan of all the previous workshops. |

Vinberg, 2012-12-06 This book is based on the notes of the authors' seminar on algebraic and Lie groups held at the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow University in 1967/68. Our guiding idea was to present in the most economic way the theory of semisimple Lie groups on the basis of the theory of algebraic groups. Our main sources were A. Borel's paper [34], C. ChevalIey's seminar [14], seminar Sophus Lie [15] and monographs by C. Chevalley [4], N. Jacobson [9] and J-P. Serre [16, 17]. In preparing this book we have completely rearranged these notes and added two new chapters: Lie groups and Real semisimple Lie groups. Several traditional topics of Lie algebra theory, however, are left entirely disregarded, e.g. universal enveloping algebras, characters of linear representations and (co)homology of Lie algebras. A distinctive feature of this book is that almost all the material is presented as a sequence of problems, as it had been in the first draft of the seminar's notes. We believe that solving these problems may help the reader to feel the seminar's atmosphere and master the theory. Nevertheless, all the non-trivial ideas, and sometimes solutions, are contained in hints given at the end of each section. The proofs of certain theorems, which we consider more difficult, are given directly in the main text. kac 716: Series and Products in the Development of Mathematics Ranjan Roy, 2021 Sources in the Development of Mathematics: Series and Products from the Fifteenth to the Twenty-first Century, my book of 2011, was intended for an audience of graduate students or beyond. However, since much of its mathematics lies at the foundations of the undergraduate mathematics curriculum, I decided to use portions of my book as the text for an advanced undergraduate course. I was very pleased to find that my curious and diligent students, of varied levels of mathematical talent, could understand a good bit of the material and get insight into mathematics they had already studied as well as topics with which they were unfamiliar. Of course, the students could profitably study such topics from good textbooks. But I observed that when they read original proofs, perhaps with gaps or with slightly opaque arguments, students gained very valuable insight into the process of mathematical thinking and intuition. Moreover, the study of the steps, often over long periods of time, by which earlier mathematicians refined and clarified their arguments revealed to my students the essential points at the crux of those results, points that may be more difficult to discern in later streamlined presentations. As they worked to understand the material, my students witnessed the difficulty and beauty of original mathematical work and this was a source of great enjoyment to many of them. In more recent times, these interrelations have become even more strikingly apparent. This text combines, for the first time in book form, the theories of finite dimensional algebras and quantum groups. More precisely, it investigates the Ringel-Hall algebra realization for the positive part of a quantum enveloping algebra associated with a symmetrizable Cartan matrix and it looks closely at the Beilinson-Lusztig-MacPherson realization for the entire quantum $\mathfrak{gl}_n$. The book begins with the two realizations of generalized Cartan matrices, namely, the graph realization and the root datum realization. From there, it develops the representation theory of quivers with automorphisms and the theory of quantum enveloping algebras associated with Kac-Moody Lie algebras. These two independent theories eventually meet in Part 4, under the umbrella of Ringel-Hall algebras. Cartan matrices can also be used to define an important class of groups--Coxeter groups--and their associated Hecke algebras. Hecke algebras associated with symmetric groups give rise to an interesting class of quasi-hereditary algebras, the quantum Schur algebras. The structure of these finite dimensional algebras is used in Part 5 to build the entire quantum $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ through a completion process of a limit algebra (the Beilinson-Lusztig-MacPherson algebra).
