kansas state indoor track: My Life and Times William B. Wray, 2022-12-12 My Life and Times is the narrative of a life both ordinary and extraordinary. The author grew up in the Midwest in a lower-middle-class working household. His immediate forebears lost their jobs and occupations, homes, and money in the Great Depression. His more distant ancestors emigrated from many parts of northern Europe and settled in what would become or was Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. Although the author's family had little money, as the first-born of four children, it was understood that he would go to college. In due course, he graduated magna cum laude from the University of Utah, obtained a PhD in economic geology from the University of California at Berkeley, and a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School. His professional career included work in the natural resources industries and in the law profession. The author describes himself, his experiences and observations about life over three-quarters of a century, in a candid, authentic, and accurate way. His life has been that of ethnic mainstream White Protestant America, a category and subject rarely written about. He has observed from the vantagepoint of an ordinary person the social and economic environment of the times. Supported by a personal diary, correspondence, and photographs, this account is both factually accurate and objective. The story is a record of how his life and the lives of those around him including many relatives, friends, and associates evolved over time, as American and world societies developed and changed. |

kansas state indoor track: Gene Keady Gene Keady, 2005 Respected for getting the most from his hard-working players, Gene Keady possesses a fiercely competitive drive which he learned from his father, Lloyd, while growing up in Larned, Kan. For the past 25 seasons, Keady's Purdue Boilermakers were among the Big Ten Conference's most difficult opponents, winning 512 of 772 games, including six Big Ten championships and a pair of trips to the NCAA tournament's Elite Eight. While many know Keady for his fiery sideline demeanor and classic fist pump in a moment of athletic passion, this former national coach of the year has a softer side, which includes an honest respect for the media and a terrific sense of humor. Within the pages of The Truth and Nothing But the Truth, the recently retired Purdue coach talks about everything from his relationship with Texas Tech coach Bob Knight, who was Keady's rival for 20 seasons at Indiana, to how the Boilermakers were able to successfully recruit 1994 National Player of the Year Glenn Robinson out of Gary Roosevelt High School in Lake County, Ind.Keady, 68, explains details how his father?a boxer turned wholesale florist?instilled a deep-seeded love for athletics, which Keady parlayed into a successful playing career at Larned High School, Garden City (Kan.) Junior College and then Kansas State University. Keady was signed by the National Football League's Pittsburgh Steelers in the summer of 1958, but a knee injury cut his pro football career short. He returned to Kansas, accepting a teaching/coaching position at Beloit High School, where basketball?not football?was the only coaching post available. The rest is history. In April, 1980, Keady accepted then-Purdue athletic director George King's offer to replace Lee Rose, who left West Lafayette for a South Florida job. Keady rolled up his sleeves and put Purdue on the college basketball map in a state where Bob Knight and the Indiana Hoosiers were the high-profile targets. It took Keady only four seasons to win his first Big Ten title. From there, he became one of college basketball's icons, while never losing the common touch he learned from his hardworking father in western Kansas. |

kansas state indoor track: The Track in the Forest Bob Burns, 2018-10-02 The 1968 US men's Olympic track and field team won 12 gold medals and set six world records at the Mexico City Games, one of the most dominant performances in Olympic history. The team featured such legends as Tommie Smith, Bob Beamon, Al Oerter, and Dick Fosbury. Fifty years later, the team is mostly remembered for embodying the tumultuous social and racial climate of 1968. The Black Power protest of Tommie Smith and John Carlos on the victory stand in Mexico City remains one of the most enduring images of the 1960s. Less known is the role that a 400-meter track carved out of the Eldorado National Forest above Lake Tahoe played in molding that juggernaut. To acclimate US athletes for the 7,300-foot elevation of Mexico City, the US Olympic Committee held a two-month training camp and final Olympic selection meet for the ages at Echo Summit near the California-Nevada border. Never has a sporting event of such consequence been held in such an ethereal setting. On a track in which hundreds of trees were left standing on the infield to minimize the environmental impact, four world records fell—more than have been set at any US meet since (including the 1984 and 1996 Olympics). But the road to Echo Summit was tortuous—the Vietnam War was raging, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy were assassinated, and a group of athletes based out of San Jose State had been threatening to boycott the Mexico City Games to protest racial injustice. Informed by dozens of interviews by longtime sports journalist and track enthusiast Bob Burns, this is the story of how in one of the most divisive years in American history, a California mountaintop provided an incomparable group of Americans shelter from the storm. |
