We could no longer hear the sound of the village people pounding the rice. It was replaced by the sound of the rice-processing machine. Buffaloes and cows were sold, their power had been replaced by a tractor. Meanwhile, in the midst of all those changes, a problem emerged due to a dishonest village-chief election. Pambudi, a Tanggir young fellow who intended to save his village from the nasty ways of the new village-chief was pushed all the way to Yogya. At the student city, Pambudi met an old friend who asked him to continue his study and work at a shop at the same time. Through the world of newspaper journalism, Pambudi continued his struggle against the cheating village-chief, and he succeed. However, the Tanggir young man lost the village girl whom he loved. He managed to find a new love later on, the girl of the shop-owner, his employer. But only after a long and painful personal battle. Ahmad Tohari was born as the fourth of twelve children in an Islamic religious family. Although his education in the pesantren developed by his parents left him with deep religious convictions, as an adult his progressive interpretation of Indonesian Islam has been criticized by some as being out of step with the status quo. He has described himself as a “progressive religious intellectual” whose aim is to nurture a modern Islam that honors Indonesia’s diverse indigenous culture and traditions while following the teaching of the Koran. His formal education only lasted till high school. He then went to college and explored several faculties, but did not graduate from any of them. He didn’t initially plan to become a novelist, preferring instead to study medicine, but was forced to leave due to economic reasons. His first and famous novel, Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk, had been translated into 5 languages. He got Southeast Asian Writers Award in 1995. |

The first part of the book reflects on the traumatic experiences of the Indonesian nation caused by a failed coup on October 1, 1965. In more general theoretical terms, this topic connects to the field of memory studies, which, in recent decades, has made an academic comeback. The focus of the chapters in this section is how certain, often distressing, events are represented in narratives in a variety of media that are periodically renewed, changed, rehearsed, repeated, and performed, in order to become or stay part of the collective memory of a certain group of people. Based on extensive original research, the book reveals that Muslim women perceive marriage as a social, cultural, and religious obligation that they need to fulfil; that they realise that finding an ideal marriage partner is complicated, with some having the opportunity for a long courtship and others barely knowing their partner prior to marriage; and that there is a strong tendency, with some exceptions, for women to consider a sexual relationship in marriage as their duty and their husband’s right.
