In response to continental rationalism, the British empiricist John Locke proposed that the only knowledge humans can have is acquired a posterior. In a discussion of the human mind, he argued, the source of knowledge is sensual experience – mostly vision. Since vision and picture-making are the realm of art, art theory picked up on questions such as: are pictures able to represent knowledge about the world? How does the production of images itself generate knowledge? How does pictorial logic differ from linguistic logic? How can artists contribute to a collective search for truth? Questions concerning the epistemic potential of art can be found throughout the centuries up until the present day. However, these are not questions of art alone, but of the representational value of images in general.   khetam dahi: Wooden Gongs and Drumbeats Chris Dahi, 2003-11-30 The moon is high and round. Its silvery light washes over and illuminates all in the homestead. In the centre of the homestead is a small bonfire. Some women are roasting corn and pears. Not far from the bonfire, sat a group of children and adults. The attention of the group is focused on the old man with a cow tail flung casually over his left shoulder. The group is expectant. Their concentration is total. The night has gone suddenly very quiet. The old one clears his throat noisily. &quote;Chapkrii&quote; he bellows with a gesticulation of his left hand.&quote;Waaaaarrri&quote;, the listeners reply in chorus.&quote;Once upon a time&quote;, he begins, drawing out the words slowly.&quote;And time came upon time,&quote; the group replies. &quote;The tortoise and the he-goat used to be best friends,&quote; began the old man, a dry smile of superior wisdom on his lower lip. The above is one of the many traditional African storytelling scenes, which Wooden Gongs and Drumbeats seeks to recapture. Funny, witty, light-hearted and highly amusing, Dahi also brings together some of the idioms and proverbs commonly used in Africa. These are, as they say, the salt with which prudent speakers spice words and statements. Their measured and apt usages are also widely regarded as the hallmarks of sober oratory. A must-read to all interested in understanding the African worldview!

Numerous royal inscriptions and sculpted stone orthostats are a testament to the large number of scribes and artists involved in the creation and masterful reworking of his image as a warrior without equal, a fearless lion hunter, a well-educated and literate ruler, and a devoted supporter of religious institutions. This selection of Assurbanipal's inscriptions presents for the first time full editions of the prism inscriptions I and T and new editions of several important texts written on clay tablets from the library collections at Nineveh. These texts describe Assurbanipal's youth and education, military campaigns against Egypt and Elam, the return of Marduk's statue to Babylon, and the building and decoration of numerous temples and sanctuaries in Assyrian and Babylonian cities. Like the rest of the SAACT series, the volume is primarily intended as a teaching aid and is ideal for both classroom teaching and for self-study.   khetam dahi: Logics and Falsifications Andreas Kapsner, 2016-09-24 This volume examines the concept of falsification as a central notion of semantic theories and its effects on logical laws. The point of departure is the general constructivist line of argument that Michael Dummett has offered over the last decades. From there, the author examines the ways in which falsifications can enter into a constructivist semantics, displays the full spectrum of options, and discusses the logical systems most suitable to each one of them. While the idea of introducing falsifications into the semantic account is Dummett's own, the many ways in which falsificationism departs quite radically from verificationism are here spelled out in detail for the first time. The volume is divided into three large parts. The first part provides important background information about Dummett’s program, intuitionism and logics with gaps and gluts. The second part is devoted to the introduction of falsifications into the constructive account and shows that there is more than one way in which one can do this. The third part details the logical effects of these various moves. In the end, the book shows that the constructive path may branch in different directions: towards intuitionistic logic, dual intuitionistic logic and several variations of Nelson logics. The author argues that, on balance, the latter are the more promising routes to take. Kapsner’s book is the first detailed investigation of how to incorporate the notion of falsification into formal logic. This is a fascinating logico-philosophical investigation, which will interest non-classical logicians of all stripes.
