joann fabrics toms river nj: One Hundred and One Patchwork Patterns Ruby Short McKim, 1962-01-01 This is one of the finest of all the available books on the making of patchwork quilts. The author is recognized as having been one of our country's leading authorities on this venerable art, and in this book she divulges many a secret that will assist you in making quilts of the highest quality. The book contains over 100 patchwork patterns, with complete instructions for cutting and sewing. All conceivable sorts of designs are diagrammed and carefully described: flower designs, rainbows designs, Irish chains, fish and bird and leaf designs. The book shows you, step by step, all the details of making each kind of quilt: it covers choice of pattern, piece vs. patch quilting, simple and complex quilts, choice of quilt materials, interlining materials, lining and thread materials, cutting and piecing, the applique process, various methods of setting together, quilt sizes, borders, scallops, flounces, valances, straight line and close shell quilting, methods of stamping, perforated quilting patterns, quilting the quilt, putting into frames, quilting in a small space, embroidery quilts, and many other topics. The book is written in an entertaining manner. The author weaves a great deal of rosy humor into the lining of her instructions, as well as some interesting facts about the history of quilting, quilt materials, patterns, and some really choice folklore about the origin of the highly ingenious names of the patterns: Monkey Wrench, Road to California, Lafayette Orange Peel, Drunkard's Path, and Crossed Canoes, to name a few. The book is not technical in any sense of the word. You can use it to make beautiful quilts provided only that you know the fundamentals of sewing. |

joann fabrics toms river nj: The Economics of Health and Health Care Sherman Folland, Allen C. Goodman, Miron Stano, 2017-06-26 Folland, Goodman, and Stano’s bestselling The Economics of Health and Health Care text offers the market-leading overview of all aspects of Health Economics, teaching through core economic themes, rather than concepts unique to the health care economy. The Eighth Edition of this key textbook has been revised and updated throughout, and reflects changes since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). In addition to its revised treatment of health insurance, the text also introduces the key literature on social capital as it applies to individual and public health, as well as looking at public health initiatives relating to population health and economic equity, and comparing numerous policies across Western countries, China, and the developing world. It provides up-to-date discussions on current issues, as well as a comprehensive bibliography with over 1,100 references. Extra material and teaching resources are now also available through the brand new companion website, which provides full sets of discussion questions, exercises, presentation slides, and a test bank. This book demonstrates the multiplicity of ways in which economists analyze the health care system, and is suitable for courses in Health Economics, Health Policy/Systems, or Public Health, taken by health services students or practitioners. |

joann fabrics toms river nj: Jesuits and Matriarchs Nadine Amsler, 2018 In early modern China, Jesuit missionaries associated with the male elite of Confucian literati in order to proselytize more freely, but they had limited contact with women, whose ritual spaces were less accessible. Historians of Catholic evangelism have similarly directed their attention to the devotional practices of men, neglecting the interior spaces in Chinese households where women worshipped and undertook the transmission of Catholicism to family members and friends. Nadine Amsler's investigation brings the domestic and devotional practices of women into sharp focus, uncovering a rich body of evidence that demonstrates how Chinese households functioned as sites of evangelization, religious conflict, and indigenization of Christianity. The resulting exploration of gendered realms in seventeenth-century China reveals networks of religious sociability and ritual communities among women as well as women's remarkable acts of private piety. Amsler's exhaustive archival research and attention to material culture reveals new insights about women's agency and domestic activities, illuminating areas of Chinese and Catholic history that have remained obscure, if not entirely invisible, for far too long. |

joann fabrics toms river nj: Swoon: Great Seducers and Why Women Love Them Betsy Prioleau, 2013-02-04 Lose yourself: Swoon has wicked fun answering that age-old query: What do women want?—Chicago Tribune Contrary to popular myth and dogma, the men who consistently beguile women belie the familiar stereotypes: satanic rake, alpha stud, slick player, Mr. Nice, or big-money mogul. As Betsy Prioleau, author of Seductress, points out in this surprising, insightful study, legendary ladies’ men are a different, complex species altogether, often without looks or money. They fit no known template and possess a cache of powerful erotic secrets. With wit and erudition, Prioleau cuts through the cultural lore and reveals who these master lovers really are and the arts they practice to enswoon women. What she discovers is revolutionary. Using evidence from science, popular culture, fiction, anthropology, and history, and from interviews with colorful real-world ladykillers, Prioleau finds that great seducers share a constellation of unusual traits. While these men run the gamut, they radiate joie de vivre, intensity, and sex appeal; above all, they adore women. They listen, praise, amuse, and delight, and they know their way around the bedroom. And they’ve finessed the hardest part: locking in and revving desire. Women never tire of these fascinators and often, like Casanova’s conquests, remain besotted for life. Finally, Prioleau takes stock of the contemporary culture and asks: where are the Casanovas of today? After a critique of the twenty-first-century sexual malaise—the gulf between the sexes and women’s record discontent—she compellingly argues that society needs ladies’ men more than ever. Groundbreaking and provocative, Swoon is underpinned with sharp analysis, brilliant research, and served up with seductive verve. |

joann fabrics toms river nj: Land, Labour and Livelihoods Bina Fernandez, Meena Gopal, Orlanda Ruthven, 2016-11-25 This book brings together a unique collection of theoretical and empirical analyses of women’s access to land, labour and livelihoods in contemporary India. The authors recognize that gender relations must be viewed intersectionally, along with other social relationships such as caste, ethnicity, religion, sexuality and age, in order to inform an integrated analysis of women’s persistent disadvantage in India. The chapters examine a diverse range of rural and urban livelihoods within sectors such as tea plantations, nursing, hair salons, sex work and waste collection. Documenting the shifts in these sectors in the context of economic liberalization, the authors offer insights on the challenges of development interventions as women negotiate shifts in their livelihood options. Written to engage, the contributions to this book will be of interest both to the general reader and to academics and practitioners in development and gender/women’s studies. |

joann fabrics toms river nj: Religion on the Rocks Aaron Michael Wright, 2014 Winner of the Don D. and Catherine S. Fowler Prize We are nearly all intrigued by the petroglyphs and pictographs of the American Southwest, and we commonly ask what they mean. Religion on the Rocks redirects our attention to the equally important matter of what compelled ancient peoples to craft rock art in the first place. To examine this question, Aaron Wright presents a case study from Arizona's South Mountains, an area once flanked by several densely populated Hohokam villages. Synthesizing results from recent archaeological surveys, he explores how the mountains' petroglyphs were woven into the broader cultural landscape and argues that the petroglyphs are relics of a bygone ritual system in which people vied for prestige and power by controlling religious knowledge. The features and strategic placement of the rock art suggest this dimension of Hohokam ritual was participatory and prominent in village life. Around AD 1100, however, petroglyph creation and other ritual practices began to wane, denoting a broad transformation of the Hohokam social world. Wright's examination of the South Mountains petroglyphs offers a novel narrative of how Hohokam villagers negotiated a concentration of politico-religious authority around platform mounds. Readers will come away with a better understanding of the Hohokam legacy and a greater appreciation for rock art's value to anthropology. |
