jill uecker obit: Pieces of Grace Karen Gibson, 2021-03-13 Grace believed she went from losing it all to having it all. In a desperate attempt to put her life back together, Grace, divorced and jobless, leaves Tucson to return to Chicago-a place she never planned to call home again. She also never planned to fall for Benjamin Hayward. Drawn into the fairytale existence of his power and wealth, Grace is unable to see what her family and friends see, and ignores the warning signs of Dr. Benjamin Hayward's dark side. Benjamin's secrets-the death of his mentally ill wife and the disappearance of his daughter-push Grace into an abyss deeper than the one that brought her home in the first place, and she risks losing even more. Pieces of Grace is a complicated story of relationships confused by undercurrents of mental illness. Readers find themselves hoping family and friends can carry Grace through her most difficult moments. |

jill uecker obit: Spaces of Experience Charlotte Klonk, 2009-01-01 This fascinating study of art gallery interiors examines the changing ideals and practices of galleries in Europe and North America from the 18th to the late 20th century. It offers a detailed account of the different displays that have been created—the colors of the background walls, lighting, furnishings, the height and density of the art works on show—and it traces the different scientific, political and commercial influences that lay behind their development. Charlotte Klonk shows that scientists like Hermann von Helmholtz and Wilhelm Wundt advanced theories of perception that played a significant role in justifying new modes of exhibiting. Equally important for the changing modes of exhibition in art galleries was what Michael Baxandall has called “the period eye,” a way of seeing informed by the impact of new fashions in interior decoration and by department store and shop window displays. The history of museum interiors, she argues, should be appreciated as a revealing chapter in the broader history of experience. |

jill uecker obit: Lakeview Legends Gordon G Johnson, 2001 Bill and Martha Lewis live in the small town of Lakeview with their five children. The adventures of the Lewis family and the other citizens of Lakeview are seldom dull and run the gamut from humorous to shocking. For example: Three-year-old Jimmy Lewis suffers physical and mental anguish when his sister, Marjorie, tells him there is a bobcat in the outhouse. By the time Jimmy is eight he masterminds revenge on Bartholomew Van Poole, the spoiled son of the local banker, who likes to bully Jimmy. Rob and Jack, two fishing buddies, get conned into becoming lion trainers when the circus comes to town. It becomes a near disaster for Jack and the circus. The town is rocked by an international intrigue and a shocking revelation. Twenty-month old twins Zack and Zeke turn the Fourth of July parade into a disaster when they escape from their three-year old sister, Hepzibah, who is charged with keeping them out of trouble. Their older brother, Raisinhead, tries to salvage the parade but fails. The Big Tippers have a bad Halloween experience. Betty Lewis finds her true love. |
jill uecker obit: Milwaukee Rock and Roll Larry Widen, 2014 The history of rock music in Milwaukee began at an age when some musicians played in a segregated part of the city. At the same time, a young singer named Buddy Holly kicked off a tour that ended with a plane crash in Iowa 11 days later. The following years brought the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and the rest of the British Invasion. In the late 1960s came acid rock, civil unrest, and Summerfest, a music festival that continues to this day. Milwaukee has had its moments in the spotlight: Bob Dylan left the stage after two songs in 1964, Bruce Springsteen's 1975 concert was delayed for hours while police searched for a bomb in the theater, hundreds of Black Sabbath fans rioted after a 1980 show, and the Plasmatics' Wendy O. Williams was beaten by police in 1981. And then there was the helicopter crash in which blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughn perished. |

jill uecker obit: Meet Me in St. Louis Frederick Wulff, 2016-01-23 The author fell in love with St. Louis at first sight. As a young teen in 1947 his parents drove him though the city on the famous US Route 66 en route to California. Much later, while employed as a college professor, he took college students on a history travel tour of this great historic city, whereby students earned semester credits. A professional history conference of the Organization of American Historians held in St. Louis later provided the author with architectural tours led by well-known historians of St. Louis. Since then the city has been like a beacon drawing him back again and again like a captivated moth lured to the bright city lights. Such an attractive destination is surely worthy writing about to enlighten others of the sites offered by the unique city. History really comes to life through visiting these sites. This travel guide is unlike many guidebooks that usually include massive entries for hotels and eating places that are often overwhelming. The primary content of this book deals with substance relating to significant sites and the associated historical background. The author's methodology stems from his experience of conducting college social studies travel tours. He believes that information about sites should be given to students (or read here to visitors) BEFORE they arrive at the destinations. That way they know what to look for and to appreciate what they are hearing and viewing. Hence more time can be devoted to soaking in the sites rather than just listening to lecture type presentations and other distractions. Prior preparation leads to a better appreciation of the guides who lead consumers around the sites. Visitors should approach new information presented by qualified guides with an open mind and stand ready to modify any thoughts generated by this book. |

jill uecker obit: The Gentleman from Ohio Louis Stokes, David Chanoff, 2016 Louis Stokes was a giant in Ohio politics and one of the most significant figures in the U.S. Congress in recent times. When he arrived in the House of Representatives as a freshman in 1969, there were only six African Americans serving. By the time he retired thirty years later, he had chaired the House Special Committee on the Kennedy and King assassinations, the House Ethics Committee during Abscam, and the House Intelligence Committee during Iran-Contra; he was also a senior member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee. Prior to Louis Stokes's tenure in Congress he served for many years as a criminal defense lawyer and chairman of the Cleveland NAACP Legal Redress Committee. Among the Supreme Court Cases he argued, the Terry Stop and Frisk case is regarded as one of the twenty-five most significant cases in the court's history. The Gentleman from Ohio chronicles this and other momentous events in the life and legacy of Ohio's first black representative--a man who, whether in law or politics, continually fought for the principles he believed in and helped lead the way for African Americans in the world of mainstream American politics. |

jill uecker obit: Design Anthropology Alison J. Clarke, 2017-11-16 Design Anthropology brings together leading international design theorists, consultants and anthropologists to explore the changing object culture of the 21st century. Decades ago, product designers used basic market research to fine-tune their designs for consumer success. Today the design process has been radically transformed, with the user center-stage in the design process. From design ethnography to culture probing, innovative designers are employing anthropological methods to elicit the meanings rather than the mere form and function of objects. This important volume provides a fascinating exploration of the issues facing the shapers of our increasingly complex material world. The text features case studies and investigations covering a diverse range of academic disciplines. From IKEA and anti-design to erotic twenty-first-century needlework and online interior decoration, the book positions itself at the intersections of design, anthropology, material culture, architecture, and sociology. |

jill uecker obit: The Villa Bonita Pamela Littky, 2016 Like many apartment buildings in Hollywood, the Villa Bonita was built during the film industry's first heyday - the 1920s. Built for the vast crews that Cecil B. DeMille was hiring during his fertile period, the Villa Bonita has housed great Hollywood figures from Errol Flynn to Francis Ford Coppola. In absence of traditionally scaled, walkable neighbourhoods, Los Angeles has long created community within the confines of these kinds of apartment complexes. In a series of photographs, Littky documents the so-called 'ordinary' people who live their now. |
