She hit the ground running, voting to the pass the Atomic Energy Act, working tirelessly to mitigate a century of flood disasters in western North Carolina, and serving the constituents she knew so well. This first biography of Congresswoman Jane Pratt recounts her youth and fascinating career on Capitol Hill. It also provides a unique federal view of North Carolina's early 20th century history. After working as a rare female newspaper editor in the early 1920s, Pratt became secretary to five tarheel congressmen over some 30 years. Her career spanned the roaring twenties, the Great Depression, World War II, and the Cold War. Pratt's amazing network was a who's who of leaders in North Carolina and Washington, DC. Her decision not to run for re-election offers insight into why 46 years passed before the state elected another woman to Congress. |

Serving as both bridge and buffer between the two countries, Lake Ontario came to host Canada’s largest megalopolis. Yet its transborder exploitation exacted a tremendous ecological cost, leading people to abandon the lake. Innovative regulations in the later twentieth century, such as the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreements, have partially improved Lake Ontario’s health. Despite signs that communities are reengaging with Lake Ontario, it remains the most degraded of the Great Lakes, with new and old problems alike exacerbated by climate change. The Lives of Lake Ontario demonstrates that this lake is both remarkably resilient and uniquely vulnerable. |

As Ontario’s first fisheries overseer, a position he held for twenty-four years, he strove not only to enforce the country’s nascent fishing laws but also to protect fish stocks and the fragile environment on which they depended in the face of Ontario’s growing industrialization. Sometimes friend and sometimes foe to fisherman and his supervisors alike, Kerr was a religious man of unyielding principles who faced constant conflict as he sought to establish order in a time when few others shared his concerns about the environment. Based on 10,000 pages of Kerr’s diaries and letters, this book is a chronological account of his life and career, beginning in Ireland with the Royal Irish Constabulary and ending with him literally working himself to death on behalf of Canada’s Ministry of Marine and Fisheries. Written by his great-great-grandson Joel B. Kerr, this book recounts the highs and lows of Kerr’s life, including some life-and-death incidents and many humorous encounters along the way. Ultimately, Kerr’s efforts to protect the fisheries proved to be in vain, but he worked faithfully until the day he died, and he never gave in to those who opposed him. His story still resonates today in a world of partisan politics and environmental degradation. Hopefully, modern readers will be more open than Kerr’s contemporaries to the lessons his life has to teach. |
