Farris, 2012-12-06 Linda Farris, her husband Garlin and their son Jeff moved to the beautiful little city of Fairhope, Alabama, after Garlin's retirement in 2010. There she has found time to pursue her hobbies of painting, photography, and writing. These things were part of Linda's list of things to do, some day, when there was enough time. Raising two daughters and taking care of a son with special needs, while living in five different states, have made life interesting. Add two sons-in-law, six wonderful grandchildren, a new grandson-in-law and her first great-grandchild due in March, and life is good. The Hendrix family reunion is an important part of Linda's life. Because of it this cookbook was started. The original descendants of Law Donald and Lennie Mae Hendrix, five boys and five girls, decided at their mother's funeral to keep the family connected by having a reunion every summer. The year was 1969. Since then attendance has grown to over 100 and the family has had some wonderful times together and grown closer over the years. Friends and family from all over the South have shared stories and recipes from their Mama's tables and Linda has added stories and memories of her Mama and Papa Hendrix and her Granny and Grandad Tucker. If you enjoy this collection of nostalgia and good food, and would like to honor someone special with a story or a recipe, contact Linda at (farrislinda@mac.com).   katen bread: The Emigrants Johan Bojer, 2022-03-22 How strange and terrifying it must be to leave your home and journey to lands unknown to seek a better life. Bojer's novel tells of a group of young Norwegian villagers who decide to emigrate to North Dakota, where they find that 'breaking the sod and surviving blizzards' is easier than feeling at home in this new land. It is a story of the hardships and joys, successes and setbacks, and perhaps most of all, the longing for both Norway and the US. These are the same feelings felt today by anyone that leaves the country they were born in to go and make a home in a new foreign place. It can be very hard to fit in and sometimes to be accepted for who you are by the local population. This isn’t a story about the grass being greener on the other side for this group of Norwegians, but rather the different ups and downs of life which they found over the Atlantic. The story in this novel is a story as well known among the emigrants that arrive today, as it was among the emigrants that arrived almost 100 years ago. Johan Bojer (born Johan Kristoffer Hansen) was a popular Norwegian novelist and dramatist. He grew up as a foster child in a poor family living in Rissa near Trondheim, Norway. He learned the realities of poverty early in his life. Bojer principally wrote about the lives of the poor farmers and fishermen, both in his native Norway and among the Norwegian immigrants in the United States. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature five times and is best remembered for his novel 'The Emigrants', a major novel dealing with the motivations and trials of Norwegians that emigrated to the plains of North Dakota.

Davies, 2017-04-06 Haitian Creole (HC) is spoken by approximately 11,000,000 persons in Haiti and in diaspora communities in the United States and throughout the Caribbean. Thus, it is of great utility to Anglophone professionals engaged in various activities—medical, social, educational, welfare— in these regions. As the most widely spoken and best described creole language, a knowledge of its vocabulary is of interest and utility to scholars in a variety of disciplines. The English-Haitian Creole Bilingual Dictionary (EHCBD) aims to assist anglophone users in constructing written and oral discourse in HC; it also will aid HC speakers to translate from English to their language. Uneven development after colonization, imperialism, and externally influenced conflict have caused many countries in the formally colonized or semi-occupied countries in the world to lag behind in wealth accumulation, investments in manufacturing, and technology. The fact that these countries were dragged into world market dynamics on an equal footing with already developed countries exacerbated these inequalities and saw the rapid burgeoning of informal economies. COVID-19 and the lockdown of western countries unravelled global production chains, resulting in hordes of workers in the Global South losing their livelihoods. Even people engaged in traditionally locally-bound economic activities, such as domestic work and sex work, found their livelihoods disappear. This volume brings together case studies from India, Brazil, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka to analyze global economic disruptions as they affected informal sector workers who were already largely invisible within state development policies. The chapters question whether existing models of neoliberal development are still conducive within the post-pandemic Global South as it grapples with rebuilding economies, livelihoods, institutions, and systems of governance.
