indian things to draw: Conversations with Indian Cartoonists Vinod Balakrishnan, Vishaka Venkat, 2019-11-05 Picking up the pen is, sometimes, like playing with fire, especially in the business of political cartooning. In a profession of stroke-and-tell, where less is more, the brooding cartoonist turns everyday events into spaces for engagement. They draw the line between concern and apathy to bring issues into public view, invariably, shaking us out of our inattentional blindness. After all, they are a tribe––an endangered one––with the silly belief that the funny bone must be tickled. Cartooning in India––a Raj legacy––has come a long way from its colonial beginnings and Punch-imitations. Since Independence, newspapers have hosted the bold and often audacious irreverence of the likes of Shankar and R. K. Laxman. Their laconic lines gave the “Common Man” the voice of an honest opinion. This volume presents conversations with India’s leading political cartoonists which take us into that recondite art of political commentating. |

indian things to draw: Indigenous Intellectuals Kiara M. Vigil, 2015-07-15 In the United States of America today, debates among, between, and within Indian nations continue to focus on how to determine and define the boundaries of Indian ethnic identity and tribal citizenship. From the 1880s and into the 1930s, many Native people participated in similar debates as they confronted white cultural expectations regarding what it meant to be an Indian in modern American society. Using close readings of texts, images, and public performances, this book examines the literary output of four influential American Indian intellectuals who challenged long-held conceptions of Indian identity at the turn of the twentieth century. Kiara M. Vigil traces how the narrative discourses created by these figures spurred wider discussions about citizenship, race, and modernity in the United States. Vigil demonstrates how these figures deployed aspects of Native American cultural practice to authenticate their status both as indigenous peoples and as citizens of the United States. |

indian things to draw: THE INC (INDIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS) SK Nigam, 2024-05-24 The INC (Indian National Congress) by SK Nigam (Notion Press) The book unravels the various aspects of the Indian National Congress since its formation. Particularly after 2014, the Congress experienced significant organizational and structural setbacks. The book places us in the middle of a sizable tent of ideologies and convictions of one of the oldest political parties in the history of the world, the Congress, which spearheaded a massive mass movement for freedom against the colonial regime and also established the framework for a democratic, secular party in the nation, which is unquestionably currently in serious crisis. Working in a small wing of UPCC (NGO Cell, which is worthless as told by Mr. Sachin Naik, Secretary AICC at Salempur 2019 LS Candidate’s interview) of its vast organization, I deciphered the history of congress . I was deeply impressed by the power of thought, the political language of its leaders specially Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru that was behind this party. Now that the memories of the Congress fight for the country's independence are fading and the new generation specially millennials, who are being misled by modern communication technology with deep fake electoral strategies, my reaction to the Congress party may be seem sentimental to it. However, like other political parties, I do not imagine the Congress party too idealistically, and as far as possible, I avoid thinking of it even in my dreams. I would like to think of it not as an old political party, but as a nurturer of independent ideas. |

indian things to draw: Indian Anthropology Lancy Lobo, A.M. Shah, 2021-09-30 Indian Anthropology: Anthropological Discourse in Bombay 1886–1936 is an important contribution to the history of Indian anthropology, focusing on its formative period. It looks at the political economy of knowledge production and the anthropological discourse in Bombay during the late nineteenth century. This seminal volume highlights the much forgotten and ignored contribution of the Bombay Presidency anthropologists, many of whom were Indians, from different backgrounds, such as lawyers, civil servants, and men of religion, much before professional anthropology was taught in India. The other contributions are by pioneers from Bengal, Punjab, and United Provinces — all British administrators turned scholars. This volume is divided into three parts: Part I deals with the six contributions on the history of the development of anthropology in India; Part II deals with four contributions on the methodology and collecting ethnographic data; and Part III deals with four contributions on theoretical analysis of ethnographic facts. The roots of many contemporary conflicts and social issues can be traced to this formative period of anthropology in India. This book will be useful to students and researchers of anthropology, sociology, public administration, modern history, and demography. It will also be of interest to civil servants, students of history, Indian culture and society, religions, colonial history, law, and South Asia studies. |

indian things to draw: What does it mean to be ‘Indian’? S.N. Balagangadhara, Sarika Rao, 2021-09-04 Why ask this question today? After all, a lot is written about India, her culture, her past, her society, the psychology and sociology of individuals and groups. Why is that not enough? It is because what we have learnt so far is either false or fragmentary. If Indian culture is not a slightly inferior, slightly idiosyncratic variant of Western culture, as the received view has it for a very long time, what else is it? Research into culture and cultural differences gives novel and surprising answers. Written for an intelligent but lay public, this book shares the results of 40 years of scientific investigations in the research programme Comparative Science of Cultures. It transcends the political distinction between ‘the right’ and ‘the left’ by looking deeper into ideas on human beings, society, culture, experience, the past, impact of colonialism etc. Today, the question ‘What does it mean to be ‘Indian’?’ is both important and difficult to answer. Is there something ‘Indian’ about this culture that goes beyond the differences between Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs or Jains? What does it überhaupt mean to belong to Indian culture? |
