jason nickless: Research Handbook on the Law of the EU’s Internal Market Panos Koutrakos, Jukka Snell, 2017-01-27 While the internal market has been at the heart of the European project from the very beginning, it has rarely been the subject of sustained and comprehensive scholarly examination in its entirety. In the face of profound legal, political and policy pressures, this timely Research Handbook reflects on the cutting-edge issues, horizontal themes and the big questions which illuminate the shape of the internal market. It places the law and policy of the internal market within the context of the financial crisis and the existential questions this has raised for future European integration. |
jason nickless: Law and Revolution Matej Accetto, Katja Škrubej, Joseph H. H. Weiler, 2024-04-23 The last one hundred years have seen a number of events that could be perceived as disruptive challenges to the normal operation of the legal order. Some have been disruptive innovations of technologies or business practices, others social changes or constitutional transformations, further buttressed by the impact of globalisation and interdependence affecting the development of international, transnational and global law. Coincidentally, this period of one hundred years has been bookended by two pandemics, themselves disruptive realities testing the resilience as well as the adaptability of the legal regimes. A hundred years ago, the founding dean of a newly established law faculty beginning its mission amid the ashes of the First World War and the disintegration of the only remaining European empire gave an opening lecture exploring the role of law and judges in the face of revolutionary societal changes. Drawing upon that important text, this edited volume explores similar challenges for law brought about by various disruptive realities. The collection looks at the past as well as the future. Following the text of the opening lecture by Pitamic, the contributions are grouped under five headings, dealing with the law and revolution in 1918, the challenges posed for law by the seemingly more gradual political or technological transformations, the effects of globalisation and the changing world, with the final contributions reassessing the law, its methodologies and traditional paradigms including, in the epilogue, the challenges posed for law the recent disruptive reality of the Covid-19 pandemic. The book will be of interest to academics, researchers and policy-makers working in the areas of legal history, jurisprudence, constitutional law, law and politics, and law and technology. jason nickless: Sustaining European social security systems in a globalised economy Council of Europe, 2012-04-10 In addition to long-term demographic trends, European social security systems face new challenges as a result of increased global competition and an international banking system focused on short-term financial gain. This report therefore explores new ways for European policy makers and institutions to make social security systems more sustainable. It investigates ways to achieve short and long-term financial viability. It also identifies key mechanisms that work to achieve social cohesion, such as greater emphasis on social rights and social dialogue. It then examines the main policy issues in sustaining major individual social security programmes, such as health care, social assistance and family benefits, pensions, unemployment and work incapacity benefits, as well as long-term care. |

jason nickless: Dragon Sleeping Craig Shaw Gardner, 2015-12-26 With this epic tale of the imagination, the bestselling author of Batman and other acclaimed novels crosses the boundaries between reality and fantasy. The Dragon Circle is Craig Shaw Gardner’s biggest, most ambitious work to date, a spellbinding fantasy saga in the tradition of Tad Williams and Robert Jordan. 1967: Chestnut Circle is an average suburban community inhabited by ordinary people—teenagers, housewives, retirees. Seventeen-year-old Nick Blake’s only major worries are homework, high school, and how to date the pretty girl across the way. Then a fierce storm strikes the neighborhood and, overnight, all of Chestnut Circle is transported to an enchanted realm unlike anything its residents have ever known. The sky is suddenly a different color, an ancient forest surrounds their homes—and a sword-wielding army advances upon them. Summoned by awesome mystical forces for reasons unknown to them, Nick and his neighbors are thrust into the center of a dire sorcerous conflict between two warring wizards for control of an immortal, all-powerful dragon. Now, whether he likes it or not, Nick must choose sides—and perhaps become a hero. |

jason nickless: Between Politics and Sociology Peter Herrmann, 2003 This is the first volume in a series on recent developments, international and comparative perspectives. As social professions are more and more forced to walk a pathway of cut-backs and political restrictions under supposedly democratic goals, this book aims at taking an active part in the international debate around the political responsibility of those working in the field, aiming as well at bringing together the different areas of professional work in the social science field. The contributions of the first volume deal with subjects connected to social integration -- the more practically oriented contributions are: The systems of guaranteeing sufficient resources in the Republic of France and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland; Anti-racism, citizenship and integration in contemporary France; Enduring Inequalities in Transitions to Labour: Class, Education and Community Disadvantage in Ireland; Two further contributions on Faith, State and Charity and aspects of the changing political environment of applied social studies. |
