interview and interrogation books: Interviewing and Interrogation Don Rabon, Tanya Chapman, 2009 The goal in an interrogation, or in any situation where a person with information might be uncooperative, is to effect a transition in willingness -- ethically and legally. A successful interrogation becomes, in fact, an interview when the subject grows willing to yield details freely and honestly. In order to initiate this transition, the interrogator/interviewer must understand the subject's motivation, the basics of effective inquiry, and techniques of ethical and legal persuasion. They must also recognize the process by which those interviewed can deceive -- and how deception can be detected. This book demonstrates to interviewers the fundamentals of effective inquiry. Rabon has divided the text into six chapters. Each chapter is organized around the concept of process, which indicates that there is a way to proceed and that the procedure involves specific steps. Each of the first five chapters is followed by a series of questions and is accompanied by an appendix containing exercises designed to reinforce the concepts contained in the chapter. The sixth chapter provides an opportunity to apply the inquiry and persuasion techniques developed in previous chapters to the transcript of an actual interview. The new edition places added emphasis on the interview process and the requisite skills of the interviewer. The questioning portion is expanded as well as the detecting deception portion. More emphasis is placed on the how-to in this edition of the text. The Teacher's Manual is available electronically on a CD or via email. interview and interrogation books: Advanced Interviewing Techniques Jack Schafer, Joe Navarro, 2022-12-29 Law enforcement officers face difficult challenges in light of the new social environment in which they must work. With additional public scrutiny on police tactics and interviewing methods, new techniques must be developed to address the changing political and social landscape. Interviewing and interrogating methods must change in concert with the increased focus on community policing and the public demand to take a softer approach to interviewing and interrogation. The new edition of this book presents positive interviewing techniques to conduct less intrusive, non-threatening interviews and interrogations without forfeiting investigative integrity. Positive interviewing techniques focus on rapport building, which serves as the keystone for successful interviews. and interrogations. Suspects and witnesses who like the people who are interviewing them are more likely to confess or provide information of value. Positive interviewing relies on psychological principles instead of threats and coercion to obtain needed information. The psychological principles presented in this book derive from proven psychological research and have been proven effective in the field. As with the previous book editions, this edition was written with working professionals in mind and contains advanced interviewing techniques. Some basic topics emphasized in other interviewing books will not be addressed. This book was designed as a quick reference guide rather than a comprehensive manual. The enhanced outline format of the text and the extended Table of Contents provide for easy reference, reading, and comprehension. The marketplace is replete with interviewing books and manuals; however, quickly locating information buried in thick manuscripts is costly and time-consuming. The style of this book is consistent with the manner in which law enforcement officers like to receive information: quickly, authoritatively, and to the point. |
interview and interrogation books: Understanding Police Interrogation William Douglas Woody, Krista D. Forrest, 2020-03-03 Uses techniques from psychological science and legal theory to explore police interrogation in the United States Understanding Police Interrogation provides a single comprehensive source for understanding issues relating to police interrogation and confession. It sheds light on the range of factors that may influence the outcome of the interrogation of a suspect, which ones make it more likely that a person will confess, and which may also inadvertently lead to false confessions. There is a significant psychological component to police interrogations, as interrogators may try to build rapport with the suspect, or trick them into thinking there is evidence against them that does not exist. Also important is the extent to which the interrogator is convinced of the suspect’s guilt, a factor that has clear ramifications for today’s debates over treatment of black suspects and other people of color in the criminal justice system. The volume employs a totality of the circumstances approach, arguing that a number of integrated factors, such as the characteristics of the suspect, the characteristics of the interrogators, interrogation techniques and location, community perceptions of law enforcement, and expectations for jurors and judges, all contribute to the nature of interrogations and the outcomes and perceptions of the criminal justice system. The authors argue that by drawing on this approach we can better explain the likelihood of interrogation outcomes, including true and false confessions, and provide both scholars and practitioners with a greater understanding of best practices going forward. |

interview and interrogation books: International Developments and Practices in Investigative Interviewing and Interrogation David Walsh, Gavin Oxburgh, Allison Redlich, Trond Myklebust, 2017-09-19 Techniques in the investigative interviewing and interrogation of victims, witnesses and suspects of crime vary around the world, according to a country’s individual legal system, religion and culture. Whereas some countries have developed certain interview protocols for witnesses (such as the ABE Guidelines and the NICHD protocol when interviewing children) and the PEACE model of interviewing suspects, other countries continue to use physical coercion and other questionable tactics to elicit information. Until now, there has been very little empirical information about the overall interview and interrogation practices in non-western countries, especially the Middle and Far East. This book addresses this gap, bringing together international experts from over 25 countries and providing in-depth coverage of the various interview and interrogation techniques used across the globe. Volume 2 focuses on the interviewing of crime suspects, aiming to provide the necessary information for an understanding of how law enforcement agencies around the world gain valuable information from suspects in criminal cases. Together, the chapters that make up this volume and the accompanying volume on interviewing witnesses and victims, draw on specific national case studies and practices, examine contemporary challenges and identify best practice to enable readers to develop an international, as well as a comparative, perspective of developments worldwide in this important area of criminal investigation. This book will be an essential resource for academics and students engaged in the study of policing, criminal investigation, forensic psychology and criminal law. It will also be of great interest to practitioners, legal professionals and policymakers around the world. |
interview and interrogation books: Investigative Interviewing Tom Williamson, 2013-09-05 The objective of this book is to review the position of investigative interviewing in a variety of different countries, with different types of criminal justice systems, and consists of chapters written by leading authorities in the field, both academics and practitioners. A wide range of often controversial questions are addressed, including issues raised by the treatment of detainees at Guantanamo Bay, The Reid model for interviewing and miscarriages of justice, the role of legislation in preventing bad practice, the effectiveness of ethical interviewing, investigative interviewing and human rights, responses to miscarriages of justice, and the likely future of investigative interviewing. The book also makes comparisons between British and American approaches to detention without trial, and the role of confession evidence within adversarial legal systems. It also develops a set of proposals to minimise the risks of miscarriages of justice, irrespective of jurisdiction. |
interview and interrogation books: The Discourse of Police Interviews Marianne Mason, Frances Rock, 2020-04-07 Forensic linguistics, or the study of language and the law, is a growing field of scholarly and public interest with an established research presence. The Discourse of Police Interviews aims to further the discussion by analyzing how police interviews are constructed and used to investigate and prosecute crimes. The first book to focus exclusively on the discourses of police interviewing, The Discourse of Police Interviews examines leading debates, approaches, and topics in contemporary police interview research. Among other topics, the book explores the sociolegal, psychological, and discursive framework of popular police interview techniques employed in the United States and the United Kingdom, such as PEACE and Reid, and the discursive practices of institutional representatives like police officers and interpreters that can influence the construction and quality of linguistic evidence. Together, the contributions situate the police interview as part of a complex, and multistage, criminal justice process. The book will be of interest to both scholars and practitioners in a variety of fields, such as linguistic anthropology, interpreting studies, criminology, law, and sociology. |
interview and interrogation books: The Art of Investigative Interviewing Charles L. Yeschke, 2003 This text details the techniques that can be used by interviewers in any setting to identify indicators of deception and respond to them appropriately. The author bases his approach on the application of the theory of human need to the process of investigative interviewing, and argues that replacing coercion and confrontation with persuasion and communication will increase the productivity of the process. Interrogators are shown how to recognize and respond to the human needs of the interviewee, thus increasing the chance that the interviewee will talk and cooperate. Other topics covered include: -- recognition of deception; responses to deception; the ethics of interrogation, preparation for the interview, and several case studies. |
interview and interrogation books: Fraud-related Interviewing Don Rabon, Tanya Chapman, 2010 Fraud-Related Interviewing concerns itself with the interview process as it relates to the fraud investigation, a fraud-related audit, or inquiry into a reported fraud. The authors' position is that the dynamics of fraud itself are inexorably connected to the subsequent fraud interview and ultimately the outcome of the investigation. The interview is not an isolated event but rather a part of the nagare, (a Japanese word meaning flow) of the entire (in this case) fraud dynamic from precursors, to the commission of the crime, to closure. In the fraud-related interview, the interviewer connects three different time periods--the past, the present, and the future. The past addresses the dynamics of the individual and his or her subsequent behavior resulting in the commission of the fraud. The forecasting of future events is sought after successful outcome of the fraud investigation. In the present, the interviewer seeks to connect the past and the future--the flow, if you will, of all three. The text utilizes interviews with convicted fraudsters to allow the reader to gain an understanding as to how fraudsters deliberate before, during and after the commission of fraud. This understanding is further enhanced within the text via application questions, practical exercises and additional relevant information. |
interview and interrogation books: Criminal Interrogation and Confessions Fred Edward Inbau, John E. Reid, 1967 Lead author Inbau has died since the 1986 third edition, but his colleagues, all with a Chicago law firm, provide yet another update of the reference first published in 1962, a year before the Miranda decision forced a quick second edition. They continue to explain the Reid Technique of interviewing and interrogation, first developed in the 1940s and 1950s, as it is currently used and understood. A new chapter discusses distinguishing between true and false confessions. The information could be helpful to lawyers and judges as well as investigators. c. Book News Inc. |
interview and interrogation books: Get the Truth Philip Houston, Michael Floyd, Susan Carnicero, 2015-03-24 Getting someone to tell the truth is an essential skill that very few people possess. In the boardroom, classroom, or our own homes, every day we interact with others and try to get the truth from them. People are often untruthful out of fear of negative consequences associated with divulging information. But if a person is made to forget the long-term outcomes of lying, he or she can be influenced to disclose sensitive information that's being withheld. The aim is to encourage the person to remain in short-term thinking mode, shifting focus away from the long-term ramifications of telling the truth. As former CIA agents and bestselling authors of Spy the Lie, Philip Houston, Mike Floyd, and Susan Carnicero are among the world's best at detecting deceptive behavior and eliciting the truth from even the most accomplished liars. Get the Truth is a step-by-step guide that empowers readers to elicit the truth from others. It also chronicles the fascinating story of how the authors used a methodology Houston developed to elicit the truth in the counterterrorism and criminal investigation realms, and how these techniques can be applied to our daily lives. Using thrilling anecdotes from their careers in counterintelligence, and with easy-to-follow instructions, the authors provide a foolproof means of getting absolutely anybody to give an honest answer. Get the Truth is the easy and effective way to learn how to get the truth every time. |

interview and interrogation books: Evidence-based Investigative Interviewing Jason J. Dickinson, Nadja Schreiber Compo, Rolando Carol, Bennett L. Schwartz, Michelle McCauley, 2019-02-21 For as long as we have been researching human memory, psychologists have been investigating how people remember and forget. This research is regularly drawn upon in our legal systems. Historically, we have relied upon eyewitness memory to help judge responsibility and adjudicate truth, but memory is malleable, prone to error, and susceptible to bias. Even confident eyewitnesses make mistakes, and even accurate witnesses sometimes find their testimony subjected to harsh scrutiny. Emerging from this environment, the Cognitive Interview (CI) became a means of assisting cooperative witnesses with recalling more information without sacrificing accuracy. First used by police interviewing adult witnesses, it is now used with many populations in many contexts, including public health, accident reconstruction, and the interrogation of terror suspects. Evidence-Based Investigative Interviewing reviews the application of cognitive research to investigative interviewing, revealing how principles of cognition, memory, and social dynamics may increase the accuracy of eyewitness testimony. It provides evidence-based applications for investigators beyond the forensic domain in areas such as eyewitness identification, detecting deception, and interviewing children. Drawing together the work of thirty-three authors across both the academic and practice communities, this comprehensive collection is essential reading for researchers in psychology, forensics, and disciplines such as epidemiology and gerontology. |

interview and interrogation books: ORBIT Laurence J. Alison, Emily Alison, Neil Shortland, Frances Surmon-Bohr, 2020-12-08 ORBIT (Observing Rapport Based Interpersonal Techniques) is an approach to interviewing high-value detainees, encompassing not only analysis and research into the methodology, but also a framework for training. ORBIT: The Science of Rapport-Based Interviewing for Law Enforcement, Security, and Military offers comprehensive treatment of ORBIT's unique perspective on human rapport and the role it plays in the interrogation of difficult subjects, including suspects, detainees, and high value targets. Alison and colleagues provide an overview of ORBIT, which was developed from analysis of nearly 2000 hours of recorded interrogations. They go on to define rapport, explaining how and why it works by reference to this corpus of data--by far the largest of its kind in the world. ORBIT reveals what this data shows: that rapport-based methods work, and that coercion, persuasion, and threats do not. Outlining the development of their own unique stance on rapport and its influences, the authors demonstrate, through real-life examples and careful analysis, why harsh methods must be rejected and why compassion and understanding work. |
interview and interrogation books: The Truth Machines Jinee Lokaneeta, 2020-02-26 Using case studies and the results of extensive fieldwork, this book considers the nature of state power and legal violence in liberal democracies by focusing on the interaction between law, science, and policing in India. The postcolonial Indian police have often been accused of using torture in both routine and exceptional criminal cases, but they, and forensic psychologists, have claimed that lie detectors, brain scans, and narcoanalysis (the use of “truth serum,” Sodium Pentothal) represent a paradigm shift away from physical torture; most state high courts in India have upheld this rationale. The Truth Machines examines the emergence and use of these three scientific techniques to analyze two primary themes. First, the book questions whether existing theoretical frameworks for understanding state power and legal violence are adequate to explain constant innovations of the state. Second, it explores the workings of law, science, and policing in the everyday context to generate a theory of state power and legal violence, challenging the monolithic frameworks about this relationship, based on a study of both state and non-state actors. Jinee Lokaneeta argues that the attempt to replace physical torture with truth machines in India fails because it relies on a confessional paradigm that is contiguous with torture. Her work also provides insights into a police institution that is founded and refounded in its everyday interactions between state and non-state actors. Theorizing a concept of Contingent State, this book demonstrates the disaggregated, and decentered nature of state power and legal violence, creating possible sites of critique and intervention. |

interview and interrogation books: Interviewing in Social Science Research Lee Ann Fujii, 2017-07-28 What is interviewing and when is this method useful? What does it mean to select rather than sample interviewees? Once the researcher has found people to interview, how does she build a working relationship with her interviewees? What should the dynamics of talking and listening in interviews be? How do researchers begin to analyze the narrative data generated through interviews? Lee Ann Fujii explores the answers to these inquiries in Interviewing in Social Science Research, the latest entry in the Routledge Series on Interpretive Methods. This short, highly readable book explores an interpretive approach to interviewing for purposes of social science research. Using an interpretive methodology, the book examines interviewing as a relational enterprise. As a relational undertaking, interviewing is more akin to a two-way dialogue than a one-way interrogation. Fujii examines the methodological foundations for a relational approach to interviewing, while at the same time covering many of the practical nuts and bolts of relational interviewing. Examples come from the author’s experiences conducting interviews in Bosnia, Rwanda, and the United States, and from relevant literatures across a variety of social scientific disciplines. Appendices to the book contain specific tips and suggestions for relational interviewing in addition to interview excerpts that give readers a sense of how relational interviews unfold. This book will be of great value to graduate students and researchers from across the social sciences who are considering or planning to use interviews in their research, and can be easily used by academics for teaching courses or workshops in social science methods. |

interview and interrogation books: Constitutional Limitations of Interviewing and Interrogations in American Policing Ross Wolf, Charles Mesloh, Robert H. Wood, 2013 Interviews and interrogations of suspects, witnesses, and victims are still the most important evidence available to police officers today. Crime scene evidence, including DNA samples, blood samples, fingerprints, and shoe tracks may be instrumental in making a case in court, but often physical evidence cannot be located without a properly conducted, thorough preliminary investigation which may include both interviews of witnesses and victims and interrogations of suspects. It is difficult for the most seasoned criminal lawyer to keep up with the various interpretations of law; yet law enforcement officers are tasked with not only being able to comprehend decisions and how they impact their processes and the rules of criminal procedure, but to diligently and correctly interpret those rulings into rapidly-evolving situations on the street or in an interrogation room. This book has been compiled to provide practitioners and those who study criminal justice with the resources necessary to fully understand Supreme Court interpretations of how the police can and must utilize case law in collecting testimonial evidence, evidence from stop and frisk encounters, and polygraph testing. This book presents federal case law, and discussions of those cases, to develop an understanding of laws concerning police interviews and interrogations. Additionally, this text utilizes Bottom Line discussions that focus on the applications of the case law to police conduct. The Teacher's Manual is available electronically on a CD or via email.
