I was motivated to write this book after teaching my very first human services class back in 2002. I didn't know (way back then) that most professors adopted one or two textbooks and then developed a class based on their content. I developed a course curriculum based on what I knew from having worked in the field for more than a decade. Imagine my surprise when I couldn't find a single book that matched the way I thought the course should be taught! Rather than teaching through the lens of populations (e.g., working with children, working with families, etc.), I believed an introductory course should be taught from the perspective of the practice settings we worked in, which often reflects a range of major social problems within society--
