  hugo von kuenheim: Bettelorden in Stadt und Land Andreas Rüther, 1997 Das spätmittelalterliche Straßburg beherbergte allein sechs Klöster der Bettelorden in seinen Mauern: Franziskaner und Dominikaner ließen sich im ersten Viertel des dreizehnten Jahrhunderts nieder, Augustiner-Eremiten, Karmeliter und Sackbrüder siedelten sich in der zweiten Jahrhunderthälfte an, und bis zur Jahrhundertwende wurden die Wilhelmiten in der oberrheinischen Metropole ansässig. Die bettelnden Brüder waren aber nicht nur in der Freien Reichsstadt vertreten, sie erschlossen auch das in sog. Termineibezirke eingeteilte Elsaß durch ein Netz von Außenstationen und Absteigequartieren. Mit der Ausbildung dieses Terminierwesens entstand während des vierzehnten und fünfzehnten Jahrhunderts im unterelsässischen Territorium ein regionaler Wirkungsbereich für die Ordenshäuser: In zunehmendem Maße verließen die Religiosen den unmittelbaren Stadtraum und durchwanderten die umliegenden Gebiete, predigten an besonderen Stellen zu bestimmten Zeiten, gewannen Anhänger und Nachwuchs, sammelten Almosen und Schenkungen. Die konstante Vergabung von Getreide- und Geldrenten vor allem an Prediger und Barfüßer, aber auch an Einsiedel- und Frauenbrüder durch Bauern und Landbewohner verdeutlicht die Kontinuität einer ländlichen Existenz der Bettelmönche. Durch die Ortsbestimmung dieser Zuwendungen war es möglich, Verdichtungen der Liegenschaften zu erkennen, das seelsorgerliche Ausgreifen in die agrarische Umgebung zu verfolgen und eine Einbettung in das Sozialgefüge der Landbevölkerung festzustellen. Waren die Fratres anfangs mit ihrer Lebensweise an die städtischen Zentren gebunden, so entwickelte sich das Landgebiet mit zeitlicher Verzögerung zu einer Zone, in der ein mendikantisches Dasein ebenso möglich werden konnte. Zwar blieb die urbane Lebenswelt der nächstgelegene Bewegungsraum der bettelnden Brüder, doch das rurale Umland wurde schon durch die mit Bettel und Predigt verbundene Mobilität zum gleichgewichtigen Tätigkeitsfeld der Konvente.
