husson university notable alumni: Working in Conflict - Working on Conflict Pat Gibbons, Brigitte Piquard, 2006-01-01 The intensification and multiplicity of protracted conflicts, the blurring of traditional distinctions between war zones and safe areas, together with increased difficulties in distinguishing botween belligerents and civilian population have all served to worsen the fate of innocent victims and to complicate the work of those who try to assist them. Actors who claim space under the humanitarian banner are guided by varying principles of humanitarianism or employ diflerent interpretations of a small number of acknowledged humanitarian principles. This book addresses some of the main challenges and dilemmas of contemporary humanitarian work. It presents a selection of papers from a high level forum that the Network on Humanitarian Assistance (NOHA) convened in 2003 as an introductory course to its Joint European Master's in International Humanitarian Action. The event gathered over two hundred participants including researchers, policy makers, practitioners, and postgraduate students from around the world. The first section of the book explores the meaning of the «humanitarian» concept. The second analyses the evolving mandates of humanitarian actors under a number of broad groupings and, finally, the third examines the scope of the humanitarian business and the relationship between humanitarian action and conflict transformation - hence the title working in conflict/working on conflict. |

The ways in which these media influence people and affect their behavior have been at issue. For the most part, undesirable effects were pondered and documented. Only a few desirable effects received similar attention and scrutiny. The research preoccupation with impact has been so pronounced that, comparatively speaking, next to no attention has been paid to questions such as why people enjoy whatever they elect to watch or hear, and more fundamentally, why they elect to watch or hear, in the first place, whatever it is that they elect to watch or hear. Without a symposium on research into selective exposure to informative and entertaining messages nor a publication that brought together the recent research in this area, this volume was put together in an effort to end this dilemma and to put selective-exposure research on the map as a significant research venture. |

With a long peninsula known as the Neck, three large islands--Orr's, Bailey, and Sebascodegan--and more than thirty other islands of varying sizes, the town has, from the start, been a fishing and farming community. In the late nineteenth century, when Casco Bay steamboat lines made the area easy to reach, flourishing resorts developed, with numerous hotels and boarding houses catering to summer visitors. The photographs that make up this fascinating visual history bring to life the changes that took place in Harpswell between the 1870s and 1960s. Images of the early, sometimes-harsh life on the coast contrast with later postcard views of Harpswell as a family resort area, complete with favorite cottages and camps.
