i ching for beginners: The Complete I Ching — 10th Anniversary Edition Taoist Master Alfred Huang, 2010-11-17 A revised edition of the definitive translation of the world’s most important book of divination • More than 64,000 copies sold of the first edition • The first English translation from within the tradition by a Chinese Taoist Master • Includes translations of the Ten Wings--the commentaries by Confucius essential to the I Ching’s insights Translated by the eminent Taoist Master Alfred Huang, The Complete I Ching has been praised by scholars and new students of the I Ching since its first edition. A native Chinese speaker, Master Huang first translated the original ideograms of the I Ching into contemporary Chinese and then into English, bringing forth the intuitive meanings embodied in the images of the I Ching and imbuing his translation with an accuracy and authenticity not possible in other English translations. However, what makes his translation truly definitive is his return to prominence of the Ten Wings, the commentaries by Confucius that are essential to the I Ching’s insights. This 10th anniversary edition offers a thorough introduction to the history of the I Ching, how to use it, and several new divination methods; in-depth and easy-to-reference translations of each hexagram name, description, and pictogram; and discussions of the interrelations between the hexagrams and the spiritual meaning of their sequence. |
i ching for beginners: The Classic of Changes , 2004-03-31 Used in China as a book of divination and source of wisdom for more than three thousand years, the I Ching has been taken up by millions of English-language speakers in the nineteenth century. The first translation ever to appear in English that includes one of the major Chinese philosophical commentaries, the Columbia I Ching presents the classic book of changes for the world today. Richard Lynn's introduction to this new translation explains the organization of The Classic of Changes through the history of its various parts, and describes how the text was and still is used as a manual of divination with both the stalk and coin methods. For the fortune-telling novice, he provides a chart of trigrams and hexagrams; an index of terms, names, and concepts; and a glossary and bibliography. Lynn presents for the first time in English the fascinating commentary on the I Ching written by Wang Bi (226-249), who was the main interpreter of the work for some seven hundred years. Wang Bi interpreted the I Ching as a book of moral and political wisdom, arguing that the text should not be read literally, but rather as an expression of abstract ideas. Lynn places Wang Bi's commentary in historical context. |
i ching for beginners: I Ching for Beginners Mark McElroy, 2005 Offering guidance to emperors, generals, and kings for millennia, the I Ching remains a powerful oracle today. However, many seekers find its symbolism and outdated metaphors a challenge to interpret. Mark McElroy strips away obscure references and reverently recasts the I Ching''s ancient ideas into everyday terms, making it fast and easy to apply its enduring wisdom to contemporary life. Neither a translation nor a paraphrased interpretation, I Ching for Beginners helps readers consult this remarkable Chinese classic with confidence. For each of the I Ching''s sixty-four passages, McElroy provides a summary, study questions, and keywords, and explains how the message relates to relationships, love, work, and projects. Also included are directions for creating and interpreting hexagrams. |
i ching for beginners: Total I Ching Stephen Karcher, 2004 The I Ching (pronounced ee-ching) is the oldest and most respected oracle or divinatory system in the world. There are currently two translations available which offer somewhat conflicting interpretations - the popular Confucian version and an earlier Taoist version called Zhouyi. Reconstructed by twentieth-century scholars and archaeologists, Zhouyi presents the highly imaginative world of myth and ritual that is the hidden base of thousands of years of Eastern thought. Now, for the first time ever, Stephen Karcher fuses these two traditions using modern scholarship and archaeological and linguistic research, along with a wide background in Eastern philosophy and comparative religion, and presents them to the modern Western reader in a comprehensive and accessible new form. TOTAL I CHING is a complete oracle with instruction for immediate use in all life situations, but is also the first translation to detail the mythology of the divinatory system, offering a revolutionary new approach to the world's oldest wisdom tradition. |

In their hands, it emerges, as it did for C. G. Jung, as a vital key to humanity's age-old collective unconscious. Here the observations of the Wilhelms are combined in a volume that will reward specialists and aficionados with its treatment of historical context--and that will serve also as an introduction to the I Ching and the meaning of its famous hexagrams. |

i ching for beginners: Tai Chi Changes Patrick Gross, Stuart Alve Olson, 2019-09-04 Tai Chi Changes is the long-awaited followup to Stuart Alve Olson's T'ai Chi According to the I Ching: Embodying the Principals of the Book of Changes. That book focuses on the 16-posture Yi Tai Chi form which is part of the 64-posture form taught in this work. These 16- and 64-posture arrangements are Yang Style Taijiquan forms based on the workings of the Book of Changes. The 16-posture sequence relates to patterns of movement according to the Eight Trigrams, while the 64-posture form relates to a unique organization of the 64 Hexagrams. Stuart collectively refers to this style of Taijiquan as Yi Tai Chi (Tai Chi Changes), with the 16-posture form's full title being the Before Heaven Yi Tai Chi Form and the 64-posture form as the After Heaven Yi Tai Chi Form.Along with the descriptions for each count (or part) of a posture, the book includes photos showing the hand and arm positions as well as foot diagrams that provide a top-down view of the specific Taijiquan stance, the direction the body faces at the end of each count (in the highlighted trigram image), and which foot is carrying the weight (indicated by a white dot in the foot icons). Seeing the diagrams along with the photos of Stuart Olson are extremely helpful, not only for learning each posture but also to have as a quick reference guide for any particular section of the form. The posture photos and diagrams add to the instructions by showing stances and arm positions without having to constantly repeat such details in the text. At the end of each posture is a comprehensive chart diagramming every count in the After Heaven Yi Tai Chi Form. Just from the posture photos, foot and stance diagrams, and the posture summary charts, a great deal of detailed information is available for long-term study and mastery of Yi Tai Chi.Serving as the foundational work and source book of the entire Yi Tai Chi system-which Valley Spirit Arts teaches through online courses, workshops, and private lessons-Tai Chi Changes is as much for beginners as it is for the more advanced students of Taijiquan. All readers will acquire a great deal of information. |

i ching for beginners: Sonichu #0 C. C., 2005-03-24 Sonichu #0 is the first issue of Christian Weston Chandler's magnum opus. At this initial stage, the comic was almost entirely about Sonichu and Rosechu, although bits of Chris's life still managed to find their way in.The hand-drawn premiere issue is a special zero issue. In the comics industry, zero issues are used as either a sales-enhancing gimmick (Image Comics is a notable user of this) or a special preview of work that will not truly begin until issue #1. Given that it previews nothing, which one Chris was going for is probably the former, though given that it's not legally able to be sold, it fails even that. The comic consists of Sonichu's first three adventures. In Sonichu's Origin, the core cast of the series is introduced as Sonichu and Rosechu are created. Then, in Genesis of the Lovehogs, the two protagonists meet and immediately fall in love. Finally, in Sonichu vs. Naitsirhc, our yellow hero does battle with his first real villain, who but foreshadows the challenges awaiting the hedgehogs in the following issue. Bonus material in Sonichu #0 includes various advertisements for imaginary Sonichu products, classic Sonichu comic strips drawn outside of the narrative of the main comic book, and the first Sub-Episode. |

You can be so different (everyone has a different horoscope) and you can be in such different situations (orphan in Brazil, mother with six children in Germany, old man in China) that there can be no instruction to self knowledge for everyone. But at least there are universal structures such as the soul, the dynamic of a horoscope, the relationship mandala or the chakra system that can help in one's orientation and also in choosing a promising direction in which to search for one's source.
