Allen, Edgar Sánchez-Sinencio, 1984-04-30 The objective of the book is to provide sufficient background and understand ing to enable its readers to design and apply switched capacitor circuits whether these are to be implemented as discrete circuits or by MOS technol ogy. Since this is the first book devoted entirely to the subject of switched capacitor circuits, it has no pattern to follow. Fortunately, it was developed in an environment where many of the circuits and concepts it discusses could actually be integrated as MOS integrated circuits. It is hoped that this environ ment has created a selection process that has enhanced the contents. Switched capacitor circuits provide an example of the influence that technol ogy can have on the field of electrical engineering. Only seven years ago, the problem of building analog circuits and systems using standard MOS technology was still unsolved. Although analog circuits and systems were implemented by means of integrated circuit technology, they were neither economical nor competitive. The act of combining analog sampled data tech niques with MOS technology has solved this difficulty. As a result, the field of switched capacitor circuits has developed into maturity in a relatively short period of time. |

The research, which was both theoretical and experimental, may be separated into three major areas. In one area N waves from electric sparks were used to study propagation, focusing, and diffraction of high intensity transient waves. Research was conducted on periodic finite-amplitude waves in a second area. In particular the author studied propagation in tubes, horns, and open media; propagation in inhomogeneous media; acoustic saturation; directional characteristics of beams; and suppression of sound by sound. Finally research was done on the propagation of finite-amplitude noise, both in tubes and in open media. |

Sliwinski, Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (U.S. : 1969-1992), 1984 This study was conducted to evaluate the power factor controller (PFC) as a potential energy conservation device for Army applications and to develop guidelines for its use. An examination of studies conducted on the PFC showed that it can be an effective energy conservation device when properly applied, cutting motor energy consumption by at least 10 percent on low-efficiency motors. However, the use of high efficiency motors is almost always more energy conservative, and PFCs do not improve the performance of motors whose efficiency is already high over the load range. |

Inertial navigation systems (INS) can now be built with error stemming mainly from the uncertainty of the vertical along the flight path (Savet, 1970). The deflection of the vertical is produced by mass anomalies on the surface of the earth. The error can be corrected by measuring the gravity gradient and using it in the navigation equations. This possibility has generated intensive interest and research in the field of gravity gradiometry. The lower bound of the resolution of room temperature gravity gradiometers is thermal (Brownian) noise. By lowering the temperature to 4 K, the noise level is smaller by an order of magnitude. A comparatively simple gravity gradiometer can be built using some newly developed superconducting technology. (Author). |

Bilsen, 1980 Experimentists in various disciplines, such as anatomy, physics, chemistry, physiology, psychophysics and psychology, have been carrying out their studies in order to increase our knowledge and understanding of sensory perception. To profit maximally from the results, obtained from these different viewpoints each should take the work of the others into account. The need for intensive communication is, therefore, ever present. In 1969, in the field of auditory research, this need resulted in P10mp's initiative to organizing an international symposium Frequency analysis and periodicity perception in hearing. Considering the lively discussions and the numerous references in literature to the proceedings of this Driebergen symposium, the meeting clearly fulfilled its need. It was clear at the time that this sort of symposium should be held regularly. This resulted in meetings in 1972 (Eindhoven), 1974 (Tutzing) and 1977 (Keele). At the meeting in Keele it was agreed that the next one should be held in 1980, again in the Nether lands. With regard to the program, we decided to carryon the - now expande- tradition of including anatomy, physiology, psychophysics and the development of models in the program, but to pay more attention to the behavioural aspects of hearing at the same time. As a result, some contributions on animal behaviour have been included in the program. One of the great advantages of this sort of symposium is, that one has the opportunity of paying immediate attention to topics that are of current interest at the time. |
