This stereotyped character appears primarily in the pulpy sensation fiction of popular writers like George Lippard, Ned Buntline, Emerson Bennett, and others. But this figure also plays an important role in the sometimes sensational work of canonical writers such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, and Walt Whitman. Whatever the medium, this character, always overdetermined, does consistent cultural work. This book contends that, as the figure who embodies money and capitalism in the antebellum imagination, the sensational Jew is the character who most fully represents a felt anxiety about the increasingly unstable nature of a range of social categories in the antebellum US, and the sense of loss and self-hatred so often lurking in the background of modern Gentile identity. Each chapter examines a different form of sensationalism (urban gothic; sentimental city mysteries; anti-Tom plantation narratives; etc.), and a different set of anxieties (threats to class status; collapsing regional identity; the uncertain status of Whiteness and other racial categories; etc.). After a brief introduction, the volume opens with four thematic papers by separate authors, followed by an extensive ethnographic study of the C.B.C. situation. The four papers are as follows: (1) Christian Brothers College: A View from Overseas, by Louis M. Smith; (2) Continuity and Change in the Brothers' Educational Mission, by Lawrence Angus; (3) Cultural Reproduction of the Labor Market: Work Experience at C.B.C., by Peter Watkins; and (4) Reproduction and Contestation: Class, Religion, Gender, and Control at Christian Brothers College, by Richard J. Bates. The subsequent ethnographic study first identifies three main themes: C.B.C. and religious education; administration, authority relations, and pupil control; and education and social mobility. Now, in this volume the author has written a work that weaves the major political, cultural, and economic events of the period into a portrait of America from 1945 through Watergate. He portrays the amazing growth after World War II, the great building boom epitomized by Levittown (the largest such development in history) and the baby boom (which exploded literally nine months after V-J Day), as well as the resultant buoyancy of spirit reflected in everything from streamlined toasters, to big, flashy cars, to the soaring, butterfly roof of TWA's airline terminal in New York.
