In this book, historian Frédéric Barbier provides an important new economic, political and social analysis of the first great 'media revolution' in the West: Gutenbergs invention of the printing press in the mid fifteenth century. In great detail and with a wealth of historical evidence, Barbier charts the developments in manuscript culture in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and shows how the steadily increasing need for written documents initiated the processes of change which culminated with Gutenberg. The fifteenth century is presented as the 'age of start-ups' when investment and research into technologies that were new at the time, including the printing press, flourished. Tracing the developments through the sixteenth century, Barbier analyses the principal features of this first media revolution: the growth of technology, the organization of the modern literary sector, the development of surveillance and censorship and the invention of the process of 'mediatization'. He offers a rich variety of examples from cities all over Europe, as well as looking at the evolution of print media in China and Korea. This insightful re-interpretation of the Gutenberg revolution also looks beyond the specific historical context to draw connections between the advent of print in the Rhine Valley (paper valley) and our own modern digital revolution. gutenberg druck: Georg Wickram’s Rollwagenbüchlein from 1555 Albrecht Classen, 2025-03-27 Since the invention of the printing press in ca. 1450, the early modern book market emerged, and so also the phenomenon of the bestseller. The sixteenth century witnessed especially the rise of Schwankbücher (books with jest narratives), and one of the most influential examples was Georg Wickram’s Rollwagenbüchlein (1555), a collection of facetious, exciting, horrifying, dramatic, foolish, and also didactic short prose tales reflecting on the ordinary lives of people primarily in the countryside and cities. Wickram drew from a range of literary sources, and his work in turn became the inspiration for many other literary collections (Montanus, Kirchhof, Frey, etc.). Although the Rollwagenbüchlein can easily be identified as one of the most influential sixteenth-century texts in the history of German literature, it has never been translated into any other language. The current book offers a biographical and interpretive sketch, the translation into English, and an extensive scholarly apparatus with linguistic, historical, cultural, and literary explanations. |

Despite medieval and modern stereotypes of merchants as godless and avaricious, medieval traders were highly devout – and rightly so. Overseas trade was dangerous, and merchants’ commercial activities were seen as jeopardizing their souls. Merchants turned to saints for protection and succor, identifying those most likely to preserve their goods, families, reputations, and souls. The essays in this collection, written from diverse angles, range across later medieval western Europe, from Spain to Italy to England and the Hanseatic League. They offer a multi-disciplinary examination of the ways that medieval merchants, from petty traders to influential overseas wholesalers, deployed the cults of saints. Three primary themes are addressed: danger, community, and the unity of spiritual and cultural capital. Each of these themes allows the international panel of contributors to demonstrate the significant role of saints in mercantile life. This book is unique in its exploration of saints and commerce, shedding light on the everyday role religion played in medieval life. As such, it will be of keen interest to scholars of religious history, medieval history, art history, and literature. |
