hortonville barber shop: Pioneer Notes from the Diaries of Judge Benjamin Hayes, 1849-1875 Benjamin Ignatius Hayes, 1929 Benjamin Ignatius Hayes (1815-1877) was a Maryland lawyer living in Missouri in 1849 when he decided to make the overland journey to California. There he became a leader of the Los Angeles bar. Pioneer notes (1929) is based on Hayes's diaries. The entries chronicle his trip west and his career as an attorney and judge in Los Angeles 1850-1877, including his experiences riding circuit to San Diego and San Bernardino. The volume also includes entries from the diaries of his wife, who recorded her trip to California in 1851 and the challenge of childrearing and homemaking in Southern California. As Catholics living in Southern California, the Hayeses boasted a wide circle of friends among their Hispanic neighbors, and their diaries reflect a special interest in the Missions and Mission Indians. |

hortonville barber shop: Dictionary of Architecture Henry H. Saylor, 1994-03-31 Dictionary of Architecture Place this useful little dictionary in your library if you want a handy source for the spelling, pronunciation (if unusual), and concise definition of terms met in the study, historical reading, and practice of architecture. Fashioned over a ten-year period by one of America s leading architects, the Dictionary can be used by architects, students, builders, and building lovers from savant to sidewalk supervisor. Verb, adjective, and adverb forms are usually omitted when the noun is listed, to save space and reader time. Only those technical terms from other fields that have a real bearing on architecture are included. Illustrations are restricted to objects that are difficult or impossible to describe in words alone. These are grouped in plates at the end of the dictionary. Phonetic spelling is used for unusual words rather than the shower of diacritical symbols which often discourages users of giant lexicons. From abaciscus to zwinger, the Dictionary of Architecture serves as a modest aid to those who would know the vocabulary of this mother of the arts. |

hortonville barber shop: A History of Westfield, Indiana: The Promise of the Land Tom Rumer, 2015-01-21 Founded in 1834 by a small group of Quakers protesting human slavery in the South, Westfield and Washington Township served as an important home station on the Underground Railroad. Shortly after black emancipation, residents rallied to promote racial equality and harmonious living, helping to curtail the clout of the Ku Klux Klan. Van Camp Company, once the largest local employer, provided pork and beans for thousands of troops entrenched in World War I, and the community's strong agricultural tradition sustained the town through the Great Depression. Author and historian Tom Rumer chronicles the challenges of growth and change in this history of Westfield and Washington Township. |
