This multi-volume encyclopedia will teach readers the central myths and legends that have formed American culture since its earliest years of settlement. Its entries provide a fascinating glimpse into the collective American imagination over the past 400 years through the stories that have shaped it. Organized alphabetically, the coverage includes Native American creation myths, tall tales like George Washington chopping down his father's cherry tree and the adventures of King of the Wild Frontier Davy Crockett, through to today's urban myths. Each entry explains the myth or legend and its importance and provides detailed information about the people and events involved. Each entry also includes a short bibliography that will direct students or interested general readers toward other sources for further investigation. Special attention is paid to African American folklore, Asian American folklore, and the folklore of other traditions that are often overlooked or marginalized in other studies of the topic. |

halloween stories bloody mary: Town of The Dead Drac Von Stoller, Life in the small town of Castile Springs was pretty boring. The only excitement this little town ever saw was bingo day only because it was one hundred percent retirement population, but that was all about to change when Sarah being younger than the rest in the town thought this quiet little town would be a good place to work on her first novel for the summer. Her first night in the town was pleasant until the owner of the house she was renting from asked her what her plans were. Sarah replied, “I am working on my first novel and was looking for a small town for some peace and quiet to finish it.” The owner chimed in and said, “Are you sure this is the place you really want to write your book?” “Oh, yes this is the perfect place,” replied Sarah. The owner did not like her answer so he said “I’m sure there are other towns besides this one. This town only has old people residing here, I’m sure you will be bored not having anyone to talk to.” Sarah quietly answered saying “I’m a bit of a bore myself, so I think if I decided to make this my permanent residence I wouldn’t be any bother to anyone.” The owner answered in a low tone of voice saying “You know you can always change your mind in the morning.” Sarah said “Thanks for your concern, but I really need to start writing, so if you don’t mind closing the door behind you and if I decide otherwise you’ll be the first to know.” “Okay,” replied the owner, in a voice of frustration. After the owner closed the front door to the house she said to herself, “That man sure is an odd one and not very interested when I said that I may not leave when my novel is finished.” |
halloween stories bloody mary: The Organ Collector Drac Von Stoller, Luther Gray was what you’d call an oddball because of his fascination with the dead. Luther always wanted to be a doctor but never got the opportunity because his father wanted him to inherit the family business and carry on the tradition like he did for his father when the business was passed on to him after his father died. Education was never stressed in his family and if Luther made bad grades at school his father could care less so with no one to encourage Luther to excel at school he just dropped out in the eighth grade and helped his father with odd jobs at the funeral home. As Luther got older his brain never developed beyond his eighth-grade education which caused him to be shy and reserved with no friends outside the funeral home. He was very proud of his work at his father’s funeral home, but he soon became bored with just draining dead people’s blood from their bodies on the cold slab. One day when his father had to go into town and run some errands, this gave Luther a great opportunity to act out his fantasy. Luther said to himself while he was wiping the dripping blood from the shiny blade he used a thousand times on the dead on the cold slab, “I’ll just remove one organ and my father will never know.” Luther removed the intestines to make himself a belt to hold up his baggy pants. Luther felt really cool about what he had done and that his father would never find out his dirty little secret. Luther didn’t realize he desecrated a human body because the organ that he removed wasn’t for science but for Luther’s own sick pleasure. Luther’s father returned shortly after finishing his last errand and said to Luther “Is everything okay?” Luther replied, “Everything is just fine Father.” Unbeknownst to his father this was just the start of Luther’s peculiar behavior. |
