hotchkiss machine gun: Hotchkiss Machine Guns John Walter, 2019-11-28 Created by a long-forgotten Austrian nobleman, Adolf Odkolek von Augezd, the air-cooled Hotchkiss machine gun was the first to function effectively by tapping propellant gas from the bore as the gun fired. Although the Hotchkiss would be overshadowed by the water-cooled Maxim and Vickers Guns, it proved its effectiveness during the Russo-Japanese War. The gun, quirky though it was, was successful enough to persuade Laurence Benét and Henri Mercié to develop the Modèle Portative: a man-portable version which, it was hoped, could move with infantrymen as they advanced. Later mounted on tanks and aircraft, it became the first automatic weapon to obtain a 'kill' in aerial combat. Though it served the French and US armies during World War I (and also the British in areas where French and British units fought alongside each other), the Odkolek-Hotchkiss system was to have its longest-term effect in Japan. Here, a succession of derivatives found favour in theatres of operations in which water-cooling could be more of a liability than an asset. When US forces landed on Saipan, Guam and Iwo Jima, battling their way from island to island across the Pacific, it was the 'Woodpecker' – the Type 92 Hotchkiss, with its characteristically slow rate of fire – which cut swathes through their ranks. Supported by contemporary photographs and full-colour illustrations, this title explores the exciting and eventful history of the first successful gas-operated machine gun. |

Pershing (1860–1948) had a long and distinguished military career, but he is most famous for leading the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. He published a memoir, My Experiences in the World War, and has been the subject of numerous biographies, but the literature regarding this towering figure and his enormous role in the First World War deserves to be expanded to include a collection of his wartime correspondence. Meticulously edited by John T. Greenwood, volume 1 of John J. Pershing and the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I, 1917–1919 covers the period of April 7 through September 30, 1917. The letters speak to such topics as Pershing's appointment to command the US expeditionary force, his initial preparations, and early meetings with Allied civilian and military leaders, including Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig and General Henri Philippe Pétain. Drawing heavily on Pershing's extensive personal papers, this collection includes his letters and cablegrams exchanged with Secretary of War Newton D. Baker and Chiefs of Staff Hugh L. hotchkiss machine gun: Nordenfeldt Machine Gunsdescribed in Detail Thorsten Nordenfelt, 2004-07 There are some names in the firearms world which will never be entirely forgotten. Among them are Maxim, Vickers, Hotchkiss and Nordenfeldt. The latter invented a number of machine guns, many of which were issued to the Royal Navy, and this book looks at a number of his inventions, and compares them with their competitors. Needless to say the book is an unashamed sales brochure in truth, but the data given, and the descriptions of the weapons makes for extremely interesting reading. The book examines the single- and multi-barreled weapons, as well as the various caliber s in which they were sold. So from single to 4-barreled guns, from 1 inch to 2.2 inch guns. Each weapon is shown mounted and ready for use, and naval carriages are also included in the many illustrations inn the book. In all there are 53 plates, six of which show penetration comparisons between the Nordenfeldt 1 inch and the Hotchkiss 37 mm. Other plates show the 4 barreled anti-torpedo boat gun, the 5-barreled infantry gun and the embrasure mounting for Nordenfeldt guns, as well as many other interesting details. There are also 55 tables giving weights and dimensions, comparisons, and every other detail worth mentioning of both Nordenfeldt guns and the competitors. The text includes advise on the use of the weapons in various tactical situations, both on land and afloat. |
