gas turbine problems and solutions: Stresses and Deformations in Wings Subjected to Torsion B. F. Ruffner, Eloise Hout, 1952 Basic equations of Karman and Chien are solved by representing the shape of a torsion box by means of a Fourier series. Angles of twist, longitudinal stresses, and shear stresses are determined in terms of the series coefficients. The method is applied to the calculation of angles of twist and stresses in torsion boxes of rectangular, elliptical, and airfoil cross section. Results obtained for angles of twist and normal stresses are in good agreement with results of Karman and Chien except at sharp corners. Results obtained for shear stresses indicate the necessity for the use of large number of terms of the series for satisfactory accuracy. |

gas turbine problems and solutions: Powered Flight David R. Greatrix, 2012-01-25 Whilst most contemporary books in the aerospace propulsion field are dedicated primarily to gas turbine engines, there is often little or no coverage of other propulsion systems and devices such as propeller and helicopter rotors or detailed attention to rocket engines. By taking a wider viewpoint, Powered Flight - The Engineering of Aerospace Propulsion aims to provide a broader context, allowing observations and comparisons to be made across systems that are overlooked by focusing on a single aspect alone. The physics and history of aerospace propulsion are built on step-by-step, coupled with the development of an appreciation for the mathematics involved in the science and engineering of propulsion. Combining the author’s experience as a researcher, an industry professional and a lecturer in graduate and undergraduate aerospace engineering, Powered Flight - The Engineering of Aerospace Propulsion covers its subject matter both theoretically and with an awareness of the practicalities of the industry. To ensure that the content is clear, representative but also interesting the text is complimented by a range of relevant graphs and photographs including representative engineering, in addition to several propeller performance charts. These items provide excellent reference and support materials for graduate and undergraduate projects and exercises. Students in the field of aerospace engineering will find that Powered Flight - The Engineering of Aerospace Propulsion supports their studies from the introductory stage and throughout more intensive follow-on studies. |
gas turbine problems and solutions: Optimum Choice of Energy System Configuration and Storages for a Proper Match between Energy Conversion and Demands Andrea Lazzaretto, Andrea Toffolo, 2020-01-31 This Special Issue addresses the general problem of a proper match between the demands of energy users and the units for energy conversion and storage, by means of proper design and operation of the overall energy system configuration. The focus is either on systems including single plants or groups of plants, connected or not to one or more energy distribution networks. In both cases, the optimum design and operation involve decisions about thermodynamic processes, about the type, number, design parameters of components/plants, and storage capacities, and about mutual interconnections and the interconnections with the distribution grids. The problem is absolutely general, encompassing design and operation of energy systems for single houses, groups of houses, industries, industrial districts, municipal areas, regions and countries. The presented papers show that similar approaches can be used in different applications, although a general standard has not been achieved yet. |

gas turbine problems and solutions: Gas Turbine Powerhouse Dietrich Eckardt, 2014-06-23 This book tells the story of the power generation gas turbine from the perspective of one of the leading companies in the field over a period of nearly 100 years, written by an engineer. Especially in times of imminent global economic crises it appears to be worthwhile to reflect on real economic values based on engineering ingenuity and enduring management of technological leadership. Though the book is primarily designed as a technical history of the BBC/ABB/Alstom power generation gas turbines, its scope is sufficiently broad to cover general development trends, including parallel competitor activities. A special benefit is the historical breakdown to the gas turbine component level, so that the book actually outlines the development of axial compressors from early beginnings, the progress in combustion technology towards extraordinary low emission values and that of axial turbines with special emphasis on early turbine cooling innovations. The sheer length of certain engineering developments over several decades allows interesting historic observations and deductions on inherent business mechanisms, the effects of technology preparations and organisational consequences. A look into the mirror of the past provides revelations on the impact of far-reaching business decisions. 2017 Winner of the Historian Engineer Award of the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers |

gas turbine problems and solutions: Lloyd’s Register Technical Association Session 1965-1966 Lloyd's Register Foundation, 1965-01-01 The Lloyd’s Register Technical Association (LRTA) was established in 1920 with the primary objective of sharing technical expertise and knowledge within Lloyd’s Register. Publications have consistently been released on a yearly basis, with a brief interruption between 1938 and 1946. These publications serve as a key reference point for best practices and were initially reserved for internal use to maximise LR’s competitive advantage. Today, the LRTA takes a fresh approach, focusing on collaboration by combining professional expertise from across LRF & Group to ensure a frequent output of fresh perspectives and relevant content. The LRTA has evolved into a Group-wide initiative that identifies, captures, and shares knowledge spanning various business streams and functions. To support this modern approach, the LRTA has adopted a new structure featuring representatives and senior governance across the business streams and the LR Foundation. The Lloyd's Register Technical Association Papers should be seen as historical documents representing earlier viewpoints and are not reflective of current thinking and perspectives by the current LR Technical Association. The Lloyd's Register Staff Association (LRSA) changed its name to the Lloyd's Register Technical Association (LRTA) in 1973. |
