  ghusl: The Kitab al-Athar of Imam Abu Hanifa Imam Abu Hanifah, 2006-01-01 The Kitab al-Athar of Imam Abu Hanifah In the narration of Imam Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan ash-Shaybani Arabic text with English translation. Explanatory footnotes in English. The Kitab al-Athar was the first book composed in Islam after the generation of the Companions. Al-Imam al-Azam Abu Hanifah Numan ibn Thabit wrote it. It comprises Ahadith that connect directly back to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam (marfu), those which stop short at a Companion or one of the Followers (mawquf) and those which are attributed to the Messenger sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam directly by one of the Followers or Followers of the Followers without attribution to a Companion (mursal). His companions Imam Abu Yusuf, Imam Zufar, Imam Muhammad, Imam al-Hasan ibn Ziyad, Imam Hammad ibn Abi Hanifah the Imams son, Hafs ibn Ghiyath and others narrated it from him. In the version before us, Imam Muhammad, himself a mujtahid, narrated each tradition from Imam Abu Hanifah and then followed each with some explanatory material, sometimes confirming and occasionally differing with his Imam. Imam Abu Hanifah Imam Abu Hanifah was from Kufa and was one of the Followers (taabioon). He was born in 80 AH in a family of Persian ancestry. Imam Abu Hanifah was a trader in fabrics. He studied with the great scholars of Kufa who transmitted the schools of Ibn Masud and Ali ibn Abi Talib in particular, but he also travelled further afield in search of hadith and fiqh. He was noted for his exceptional grasp of fiqh, and is said to have laid its foundations. He died in 150 AH in Baghdad. His list of teachers is very extensive, and his list of pupils a roll-call of honour. Sahl ibn Muzahim said, Abu Hanifahs knowledge was universal knowledge. Ash-Shafiee said, In fiqh people are the needy dependents of Abu Hanifah. Imam Muhammad He is Abu Abdillah Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Farqad ash-Shaybani. Muhammad was born in Wasit in 132 AH, and grew up in Kufa. He was a pupil of Abu Hanifah. Ash-Shafiee said, I have not seen anyone more eloquent than him. I used to think when I saw him reciting the Quran that it was as if the Quran had been revealed in his language. He also said, I have not seen anyone more intelligent than Muhammad ibn al-Hasan. Along with the Jummah prayers we have our weekly sermons. What happens is that most of us tend to forget the sermons delivered by the Imams. So I thought of this system of writing down all the sermons so that the knowledge we gain gets preserved. Furthermore the sisters who are mostly unable to attend the Jummah prayer in many country do not get the chance to learn from the weekly sermons. The males can easily record their learning and teach the women at their home. All the sermons are from the Imams from the Masjids I attend weekly and the Hadiths mentioned are from their own sermons. Sometimes the Imams may tend to refer to weak Hadiths, I have tried my best to classify them as much as possible. It will be highly appreciated if I get to hear all my readers’ feedback. I had the opportunity to read the book titled “The Most Important Lessons For Every Muslim” written by Sheikh Abdulaziz Bin Baz (May Allah have mercy on him), which I think, is a highly beneficial book to all Muslims. It gives basic requirements for the foundation of their Aqeedah (creed) and ‘Ibadah (worship). It struck me that this small but informative book would be of immense benefit for non-Arabic speaking Muslims, spread all over the world, if translated into another foreign language. While translating this book, it dawned on me that the Sheikh has written this book, primarily for Arab speaking Muslims and thus has written most of the information very briefly. But this may not be sufficient for non-Arab Muslims, whose knowledge of Islam is mixed with their local cultures and practices, resulting in deviations from pure Islamic monotheism. It is a known fact that huge numbers of new Muslims are attracted to Islam from different countries and different cultures. It is important that knowledge of Islam should be provided to them with great care and there should be no confusion in the basic religious knowledge imparted to them. Otherwise, we will be responsible for all the deviations which might crop up among these generations of new Muslims. Hence, I added new information to the original text, giving a detailed description of some subjects. I also added a few sections, such as transliteration of some small chapters from the Quran, to help the new Muslims recite during the prayers and encourage them to start their prayers from day one of their reverting to Islam. I added a few chapters to this book when I saw some Muslims misleading other innocent ones in the area of Iman and Ibadah, and instead leading them towards Shirk (Polytheism) and finally to Kufr (Disbelief). These innocent Muslims indulge in Shirk not only by being unaware of it, but all the time assuming that they are doing a valid duty in Islam. This sad situation has to be corrected by every Muslim, by eliminating the remnants of un- Islamic Jahiliya (Ignorance) practices, which are still clinging to the practices of Muslims. I started with the intention of translation but completed my work as a compilation. I have to acknowledge the services provided by brothers Magdi Al-Radi, Jassim Kitchilan, Ibrahim Kunna Abdulqadir Abdulkhaliq, Waleed Timbang and specially my brother Soliman Albuthi for their invaluable editing, suggestions and proofreading of the text. We will be greatly honored, if this humble effort of all of us could be of some benefit to the Muslims to improve their knowledge in Islam, and may Allah accept this service from His humble servants.
