Cole, 2015-04-30 This is the fifth volume in the series of reports on investigations by the Lahav Research Project (LRP) at Tell Halif in southern Israel. It focuses on the Project’s efforts in Field II during three excavation seasons between 1977 and 1980. Field II was opened on the central summit of the tell in order to examine the ancient city’s intramural stratigraphy. The excavations uncovered twelve phases and sub-phases of occupation, stretching from the end of the Late Bronze Age to the late Roman period. Included were six phases of Iron Age domestic architecture (Strata VIIB-A and VID-A) revealing especially the vitality of the Iron II Judahite settlement during the 9th and 8th centuries B.C.E. In addition were remains of a substantial 6th- to 5th-century Persian fort or residence (Stratum V), as well as successive phases of 4th- to 2nd-century Hellenistic occupation (Stratum IV). Surface traces provide evidence of resettlement at the site during the late Roman period in the 2nd century C.E.

It is located on the southeastern edge of the Mediterranean coastal plain, 26 km northeast of Gaza in Israel. Tell el-Hesi was the first Palestinian site at which the principles of ceramic chronology and of stratigraphic excavation were applied and at which the relationship between pottery and stratigraphy was shown to be significant. In 1890 W.M. Flinders Petrie excavated at Hesi and produced a general picture of its occupational history. In 1891-92, F.J. Bliss excavated stratigraphically through each successive level of the mound and identified eleven occupational levels which he grouped into eight strata or cities. In 1970, The Joint Archaeological Expedition to Tell el-Hesi, sponsored by the American Schools of Oriental Research and a consortium of educational institutions, entered the site with the objectives of investigating in greater detail and with more refined methods the stratigraphic divisions identified by Petrie and Bliss. This book appears as the third volume in the Joint Expedition's series of final publications regarding their field experience and findings. The Joint Expedition completed excavation of four distinct Persian Period occupation sequences from the acropolis area (Field I) of tell el-Hesi. This volume presents and attempts to interpret all of the stratigraphic and artifactual material associated with the Stratum V occupation at the site. It is a significant addition to the limited body of literature on Persian-Period remains in the Levant.

  gpersia chart: The Persian Gulf Sir Arnold Talbot Wilson, 1928 Sir Arnold Talbot Wilson (1884-1940) was a British colonial administrator, soldier, and politician. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1903 and served as an officer in the British Army in India. He was transferred to the Indian Political Department and subsequently sent to the Persian Gulf. Wilson was the British civil commissioner in Baghdad in 1918-20. Although he was credited with improving the country's administration, he was criticized for his violent repression of the 1920 Iraqi revolt against the British. At the 1919 Paris Peace Conference that followed World War I, he successfully recommended changing the Greek name Mesopotamia to the Arabic Iraq. However, the British government ultimately rejected his view that Iraq should not be granted independence, and he was removed from his position. Wilson later became a member of Parliament. With the outbreak of World War II, he joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He served as a pilot officer and was killed in action in northern France. The Persian Gulf. An Historical Sketch from the Earliest Times to the Beginning of the Twentieth Century is a concise history of the region. Wilson begins with the writings of Greek, Roman, and Muslim geographers, followed by chapters on the arrival of European powers, beginning with the Portuguese, the British, and the Dutch. A later chapter discusses the growth of the British influence, starting in the 18th century. Other topics covered in the book are piracy, the slave trade, and the growth of Arab principalities.
