geeta meaning in marathi: The Bhagavad Gita Richard H. Davis, 2014-10-26 The life and times of India's most famous spiritual and literary masterpiece The Bhagavad Gita, perhaps the most famous of all Indian scriptures, is universally regarded as one of the world's spiritual and literary masterpieces. Richard Davis tells the story of this venerable and enduring book, from its origins in ancient India to its reception today as a spiritual classic that has been translated into more than seventy-five languages. The Gita opens on the eve of a mighty battle, when the warrior Arjuna is overwhelmed by despair and refuses to fight. He turns to his charioteer, Krishna, who counsels him on why he must. In the dialogue that follows, Arjuna comes to realize that the true battle is for his own soul. Davis highlights the place of this legendary dialogue in classical Indian culture, and then examines how it has lived on in diverse settings and contexts. He looks at the medieval devotional traditions surrounding the divine character of Krishna and traces how the Gita traveled from India to the West, where it found admirers in such figures as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Aldous Huxley. Davis explores how Indian nationalists like Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda used the Gita in their fight against colonial rule, and how contemporary interpreters reanimate and perform this classical work for audiences today. An essential biography of a timeless masterpiece, this book is an ideal introduction to the Gita and its insights into the struggle for self-mastery that we all must wage. |

geeta meaning in marathi: Shri Dnyaneshwari - Vol 3 Sant Dnyaneshwar, 2023-12-11 Shrimad Bhagawad Geeta/Gita (also referred to simply as Geeta or Gita) is the most revered of Indian scriptures that comprehensively presents the highest spiritual philosophy in the Indian tradition. It is believed to be told by Lord Shri Krishna to Arjuna on the Mahabharat battle field of Kurukshetra. Just before the epic war between Pandavas and Kauravas was to begin, Arjuna was suddenly overcome by confusion about whether it was right for him to fight his own cousins and other relatives as also his revered teachers (gurus) and other elders who were standing opposite him as his enemies. As a result, he dropped his weapons and sat down in his chariot in a completely distraught mood. It was then that Shri Krishna who had taken upon himself the job of being Arjuna's charioteer, preached the complete spiritual philosophy by way of Shrimad Bhagawad Geeta. It helped Arjuna understand clearly what this creation is and what the purpose of human life in it is. He could then proceed with fighting the Mahabharat war as a duty in a detached manner. Shrimad Bhagawad Geeta consists of 18 chapters and is originally in Sanskrit. There have been many explanatory commentaries on it by different philosophers and thinkers. The greatest of some of the most revered saints who lived during the 13th century in Maharashtra, Sant Shri Dnyaneshwar Maharaj, wrote an incomparable commentary on the Geeta titled Bhavarth Deepika, more popularly known as Shri Dnyaneshwari, in Marathi verse form. It is believed that Lord Shri Krishna Himself reincarnated as Sant Dnyaneshwar primarily to take the Geeta philosophy down to the less educated seekers who were unable to understand the original Geeta in Sanskrit language. Shri Dnyaneshwari is the result of that. Sant Shri Dnyaneshwar maharaj took samadhi at a tender age of 21 years soon after completing Dnyaneshwari, which confirms the belief that the primary purpose of his incarnation was delivering Geeta philosophy to the masses of ordinary people. The original Dnyaneshwari is organised exactly on the lines of Geeta in 18 chapters. Each of the shlokas (verses) of Geeta has many owis (Marathi verses) explaining the meaning of the particular shloka. Sant Shri Dnyaneshwar excels in putting across the underlying philosophy by way of many different metaphors and examples from the day-to-day life making it easy for a sincere reader to understand and digest it. The Dnyaneshwari owis are in old Marathi of the 13th century. This series of three books is an attempt by the author to take the Dnyaneshwari to non-Marathi seekers. It is a literal translation of the original owis rendered as modern English prose. It is presented in the following format - the literal meaning in English of the original Sanskrit shloka/s of Geeta followed by the English translation of the related owis. At some places, more than one shloka are presented together if the meaning can be better understood that way. The reader is expected to have a reasonable degree of familiarity with Indian spiritual philosophy and the commonly used Sanskrit terms in respect of the various fundamental spiritual concepts. The original Sanskrit shlokas of Geeta in Devnagari script are not included because Kindle does not support the relative font at present. Chapter 1 and the first ten shlokas of Geeta describe the formation of armies on both the sides with the names and qualities of the various warriors gathered on the battle field. There is also a description of the distraught state of Arjuna's mind in this initial part. The actual philosophical preaching by Lord Shri Krishna starts from Chapter 2, shloka 11 and hence this book also starts from that point onwards. This translation of the complete Dnyaneshwari is presented in three volumes. The first volume covers chapters 2 to 8, second covers chapters 9-13 and the third covers chapters 14-18. |

geeta meaning in marathi: Literary Echoes of Gita Sameer Godbole, 2024-11-09 ‘Literary Echoes of Gita’ endeavours to comprehend how a timeless work of literature transitions through generations while retaining its contemporary relevance through multiple perspectives and interpretations that develop over time. The author attempts a contemporary analysis and comparative study of the interpretations of one of the most revered texts in Hindu Philosophy – Bhagavad Gita, by Sant Dnyaneshwar and Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, two luminaries in India’s socio-political, spiritual, and intellectual history. Sant Dnyaneshwar’s 13th-century literary work, “Dnyaneshwari”, is a profound, transcendent, and devotional masterpiece that emphasizes the unity of all existence and the path to self-realization through love, knowledge, and wisdom. In contrast, Lokmanya Tilak’s early 20th-century work “Gita Rahasya”, offers a rational and action-oriented interpretation, highlighting the importance of duty and ethical action in the quest for national independence, personal freedom, and social justice. By exploring the historical, social, and political contexts in which these interpretations were situated, this book further attempts to reveal the profound relevance of their teachings in today’s world. |

geeta meaning in marathi: The Thought of Bal Gangadhar Tilak Robert E. Upton, 2024-02-16 This work is a systematic study of Bal Gangadhar Tilak's thought, focusing on his views on 'communal' relations within the Indian polity, on caste and reform in Hindu society, and on political ethics regarding violence and non-cooperation. The Thought of Bal Gangadhar Tilak adopts a contextualist approach, situating his ideas in local Maharashtrian as well as pan-Indian and global cultural-intellectual contexts. The approach blends Tilak's quotidian journalism and speeches alongside his canonical texts on Aryan history and on the Bhagavad Gita. The work marks a departure from current interpretations, emphatically arguing that he is misappropriated and/or misunderstood as a proto-Hindutva thinker. Instead, he is revealed to be a radical liberal who supports counter-autocratic violence, a majoritarian pluralist in terms of intercommunity relations, a self-strengthening reformer who focuses on masculinity, and a Brahmin supremacist who is committed to reshaping India for the challenges of modernity. This book lays emphasis on his remarkable recognition as the nation's 'founding father' and particularly demonstrates how this later appropriation by Gandhi was contested by those celebrating Tilak's approach to contest him during the crucial mid-1920s period when he was indelibly linked to re-emerging Hindutva. More recently, growing ahistorical demi-official insistence on his social progressivism illustrates a change in India's public culture, as does the use of popular or even legal pressure to de-legitimize perennial criticism of Tilak's socio-political positions. |
geeta meaning in marathi: The Mask We Wear Anil Bhise, 2024-02-29 Revolution came in different stages in the gradual development of the brain in humans. The entire focus, instead of betterment of life got diverted to living a self-absorbed and narcissistic life at the cost of others. Ambitions turned into hatred, revenge, and self-sustenance by killing. Revolutions gave more and more weapons in the hands of humans to wipe out everything that they did not want. It became a race of massacres, which became only a number without any value. Industrial Revolution, meant for comfort, peace, and harmony, turned into a competition to see who had more. Right from the Mahabharat War around 3500 B.C. and then World Wars I & II, the top leaders of the world took pride in devastation and killing. A man never looked at a woman as a human being and used her as an object to satisfy his lust. Torturing other humans was enjoyed over a toast of wine. Dharma, the righteous path explained in the Vedas, the Bhagavad Gita, and then the Ten Commandments, is grossly misunderstood, misinterpreted, and distorted. They taught sacrifice and virtues, and order that will make life and the universe possible. Even nature was not spared. “Selfishness” has become the order of the day. What is the view of the young? |

geeta meaning in marathi: Elevation to Krsna Consciousness His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, 2017-02-07 The quality of our consciousness can go up or down based on how we see the world and act in it. When we act like the eternal spiritual beings that we are – small parts of a supreme whole – makes us happy. But if we focus our attempts at happiness on the temporary body and mind – on matter – and make those our life's priority, our consciousness will shrink and we’ll be miserable. Spiritual elevation – raising our consciousness to higher levels – happens quickly when we revive our God consciousness. In this compact book, Srila Prabhupada recommends seeing the world as it is – a temporary place full of anxiety – and then taking the road to higher consciousness by rediscovering our relationship with the Supreme Person, Krishna. Anyone can become elevated; the journey begins with a single step up. |

The book poses pertinent questions like: · What influences the choice of texts and the translations, both within and outside India? · Are there different ideas of India produced through these translations? · What changes have occurred over the last two hundred odd years, from the time of colonialism and anti-colonial struggle to that of globalisation? · How does one rate the success or otherwise of a translation? · What is the role of these translations in their host languages, in their cultural and literary polysystems? The book includes eighteen essays from eminent academics and researchers who examine the numerous facets of the rich and varied translation activity. It shows how borders-both national and subnational, and generic-are created, how they are reinforced and how they are crossed. While looking at the theory, methodology and language of translation, the essays also enunciate the role of translations in political, social and cultural movements. |

geeta meaning in marathi: Annihilation of Caste B.R. Ambedkar, 2014-10-07 B.R. Ambedkar's Annihilation of Caste is one of the most important, yet neglected, works of political writing from India. Written in 1936, it is an audacious denunciation of Hinduism and its caste system. It offers a scholarly critique of Hindu scriptures, scriptures that sanction a rigidly hierarchical and iniquitous social system. Arundhati Roy introduces this extensively annotated edition in The Doctor and the Saint, examining the persistence of caste in modern India, and how the conflict between Ambedkar and Gandhi continues to resonate. Roy breathes new life into Ambedkar's anti-caste utopia, and says that without a Dalit revolution, India will continue to be hobbled by systemic inequality. |

Yatharth Geeta – The Geeta in its True Perspective Shreemad Bhagwad Geeta - Science of Religion for Mankind What were the inner feelings and emotions of Shri Krishn when he preached the Geeta? All inner feelings cannot be expressed in words. Some can be told, some are expressed through the body language, and the rest are to be realised which can only be understood by a seeker through experiences. Only after attaining the state which Shri Krishn had been to, an accomplished teacher knows what Geeta says. He simply does not reiterate verses of the Geeta but, in fact, gives experiences to the inner feelings of the Geeta. This is possible because he sees the same picture which was there when Shri Krishn preached the Geeta. He therefore, sees the real meaning, can show it to us, can evoke the inner feelings and would lead us on the path of enlightenment. Rev. Shri Paramhansji Mahraj was also an enlightened teacher of such a level and the compilation of his words and blessings to grasp the inner feelings of the Geeta itself is the 'Yatharth Geeta. – Swami Adgadanand |

geeta meaning in marathi: The Afterlives of the Bhagavad Gita Dorothy M. Figueira, 2023-03-11 This volume stems from the understanding that historiographical analyses of the Gita's reception overlook the element of its translation. It begins with this recognition and posits translation as fundamental to any understanding of the Gita's reception. It examines in depth and compares how translations of the Gita do not seek the same aims in all places and at all times and recognizes that translation theories and methodologies are not uniform across nations and eras. Therefore, this volume looks at insolites (unusual, strange) readings of the Gita and how they seek to fill the hermeneutical gap between readings tied to its canonical and scriptural status and those that are distant from the text's tradition. |
