Michael Ashcraft, 2018-02-02 The American public’s perception of New Religious Movements (NRMs) as fundamentally harmful cults stems from the anticult movement of the 1970s, which gave a sometimes hysterical and often distorted image of NRMs to the media. At the same time, academics pioneered a new field, studying these same NRMs from sociological and historical perspectives. They offered an interpretation that ran counter to that of the anticult movement. For these scholars in the new field of NRM studies, NRMs were legitimate religions deserving of those freedoms granted to established religions. Those scholars in NRM studies continued to evolve methods and theories to study NRMs. This book tells their story. Each chapter begins with a biography of a key person involved in studying NRMs. The narrative unfolds chronologically, beginning with late nineteenth- and early-twentieth century perceptions of religions alternative to the mainstream. Then the focus shifts to those early efforts, in the 1960s and 1970s, to comprehend the growing phenomena of cults or NRMs using the tools of academic disciplines. The book’s midpoint is a chapter that looks closely at the scholarship of the anticult movement, and from there moves forward in time to the present, highlighting themes in the study of NRMs like violence, gender, and reflexive ethnography. No other book has used the scholars of NRMs as the focus for a study in this way. The material in this volume is, therefore, a fascinating viewpoint from which to explore the origins of this vibrant academic community, as well as analyse the practice of Religious Studies more generally. |

It is a response to the 2019 book Dear Church by Lenny Duncan, a former Lutheran pastor who is Black and who, among other reparations, calls for changing the church’s worship in order to address segregated Sundays. Changes in worship affect theological foundations. Informed consideration is essential. Because entering into life-changing conversations requires vulnerability and commitment, this book includes several narratives: my life as a White woman and pastor, the history of the Black church as defined by Black theologians, the development of the liturgical renewal movement, and my experiences as a professor navigating worship conflicts as my seminary struggled with financial constraints and a changing student body. The seminary conflicts offered me a window into how better to address racism inspired by the example of post-WWII German truth-telling and how some US Southern states have come to grips with the history of the Jim Crow South (described in Susan Neiman’s Learning from the Germans). This book outlines a way forward for churches in responding to racism by encouraging healthy engagement with contentious relationships as a necessity for healing. |

gtu endorsement: Your People Will Be My People Sebastian Bakare, 2023-09-19 In 2008, Bishop Bakare was awarded Sweden’s Per Anger Prize, an international award set up for those fighting for human rights and democracy. In his acceptance speech, Bishop Bakare talked about his parishioner Justine Mukoko, who was missing after having been kidnapped from her home in the middle of the night. He also spoke about Itai Dzamara, a young activist and critic of then-Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe, who had also disappeared. That speech memorializing Zimbabwe’s struggle to become a truly democratic nation is at the heart of Bishop Bakare’s memoir, and it reflects his own life that encompasses all of Zimbabwe’s modern history. When he was a child, Bishop Bakare’s family was evicted from their home and lost their livelihoods when white settlers invaded and stole their land. As a young man he was forced to flee after criticizing the white occupiers. The joy of returning from exile to vote in Zimbabwe’s first election was soon replaced by his realization that the Mugabe regime was corrupt and his countrymen and women were still impoverished and repressed. Still, he returned to Zimbabwe, with his beloved wife, Ruth, and his daughters to strive to answer the call he heard, while still in secondary school from Isa 6:8: “Then I heard the voice of the Lord. He said, ‘Who will I send? Who will go for us?’ I said, ‘Here I am. Send me!’” Bishop Bakare’s fight for freedom for all God’s people and, especially, the people of Zimbabwe, culminated in his accepting the position of interim bishop of Harare when Mugabe was backing breakaway Bishop Nolbert Kunonga. That role led him into direct and dangerous conflict with Mugabe’s forces, even into a standoff with armed men during Sunday mass. |

But they also have application to certain missions of the intelligence community, such as covert action. They may be useful for certain domestic law enforcement purposes, and some analysts believe that they might be useful for certain private sector entities who are themselves under cyberattack. This report considers all of these applications from an integrated perspective that ties together technology, policy, legal, and ethical issues. Focusing on the use of cyberattack as an instrument of U.S. national policy, Technology, Policy, Law and Ethics Regarding U.S. Acquisition and Use of Cyberattack Capabilities explores important characteristics of cyberattack.
