guess what it says scholastic: Chicken Butt! Erica S. Perl, 2015-10-05 You know what? What? Chicken butt! The classic schoolyard joke has been recast as an irreverent picture book, with call-and-response parts for parent and child. The word repetition in Erica S. Perl’s text, and wonderfully comic illustrations by beloved artist Henry Cole, make this a particularly inviting book for new readers, as does the opportunity to “trick†? a parent or other adult into participating in a very silly joke. The humor builds to a surprising and satisfying conclusion. Warning: Kids will want to read this one over and over and over again! “An unhinged piece of slap-happy rhyming...rocket-propelled artwork...the romp is a powerful piece of cacophony, more frenetic by the moment.†?—Kirkus Reviews

guess what it says scholastic: Scores John Clute, 2016-11-24 For more than 50 years John Clute has been reviewing science fiction and fantasy. As Scores demonstrates, his devotion to the task of understanding the central literatures of our era has not slackened. There are jokes in Scores, and curses, and tirades, and apologies, and riffs; but every word of every review, in the end, is about how we understand the stories we tell about the world. Following on from his two previous books of collected reviews (Strokes and Look at the Evidence) this book collects reviews from a wide variety of sources, but mostly from Interzone, the New York Review of Science Fiction, and Science Fiction Weekly. Where it has seemed possible to do so without distorting contemporary responses to books, these reviews have been revised, sometimes extensively. 125 review articles, over 200 books reviewed in more than 214,000 words.

guess what it says scholastic: Chronic: A Sick Novel Paul Lima, 2020-12-05 Chronic Readers React... If this book were a movie, the cleaners would have to mop up buckets of tears. Of joy. Of laughter. And yes, of sadness. I'm lucky I had a box of tissues close by. You cracked my heart, and then fixed it. Broke my heart, and then repaired it. Smashed my heart, but somehow left me feeling that it was fully mended. I don't know if it's because I have MS, but I laughed, cheered, and cried. Sometimes all three in the same chapter. You don't have to be sick to love this book. I had to pause at the end of the final chapter, and have a good cry. Mostly tears of joy. Once composed, I read the epilogue. And damn it, if I was not in tears again. As a cat lover, 'kitty' was my favorite part of a mighty fine book! About the Book Paul and Deena are friends with MS and Parkinson's Disease respectively. They've found a wonderful flat renovated for people with disabilities, only they can't afford it. Enter Albert, a former nurse with cancer, and Bolton, an athletic paraplegic. They too look at the flat, and love it. But can't afford it. The solution? The four of them move in together. And life happens. Paul, who has retired from motivational speaking, is motivated into accepting another talk, while working on his painting. Bolton, a former sprinter, tries out for the wheelchair racing team and wheelchair basketball team, while setting up his web design business. Deena, a former PhD student, needs help with her renovation business. Instead of helping to heal people, which he did as a nurse, Albert begins to help Deena heal houses. Our main characters also have to sort out issues with former partners, some of whom have broken up on good terms and some on terms that were not so good, all while dealing with their maladies, and helping each other deal with their chronic issues. In short, illness does not make life, especially if you are determined to live as full a life as possible, despite your malady. And that is just what Paul, Deena, Albert and Bolton try their damnedest to do. About the author Paul Lima has had MS for over 20 years, moving from relapsing remitting MS to secondary progressive MS about five years ago. He has been a professional writer all his healthy and all his sick life. It's been more difficult when ill, but it has just meant he has had to work harder at it.
guess what it says scholastic: Metaphysical Themes 1274-1671 Robert Pasnau, 2013-02-07 Robert Pasnau traces the developments of metaphysical thinking through four rich but for the most part neglected centuries of philosophy, running from the thirteenth century through to the seventeenth. At no period in the history of philosophy, other than perhaps our own, have metaphysical problems received the sort of sustained attention they received during the later Middle Ages, and never has a whole philosophical tradition come crashing down as quickly and completely as did scholastic philosophy in the seventeenth century. The thirty chapters work through various fundamental metaphysical issues, sometimes focusing more on scholastic thought, sometimes on the seventeenth century. Pasnau begins with the first challenges to the classical scholasticism of Bonaventure and Thomas Aquinas, runs through prominent figures like John Duns Scotus and William Ockham, and ends in the seventeenth century, with the end of the first stage of developments in post-scholastic philosophy: on the continent, with Descartes and Gassendi, and in England, with Boyle and Locke.

guess what it says scholastic: Critical Understanding Wayne C. Booth, 1979 Critics will always disagree, but, maintains Wayne Booth, their disagreement need not result in critical chaos. In Critical Understanding, Booth argues for a reasoned pluralism—a criticism more various and resourceful than can be caught in any one critic's net. He relates three noted pluralists—Ronald Crane, Kenneth Burke, and M. H. Abrams—to various currently popular critical approaches. Throughout, Booth tests the abstractions of metacriticism against particular literary works, devoting a substantial portion of his discussion to works by W. H. Auden, Henry James, Oliver Goldsmith, and Anatole France.
