fm1 0: Introduction to Interactive Boundary Layer Theory Ian John Sobey, 2000 One of the major achievements in fluid mechanics in the last quarter of the twentieth century has been the development of an asymptotic description of perturbations to boundary layers known generally as 'triple deck theory'. These developments have had a major impact on our understanding of laminar fluid flow, particularly laminar separation. It is also true that the theory rests on three quarters of a century of development of boundary layer theory which involves analysis, experimentation and computation. All these parts go together, and to understand the triple deck it is necessary to understand which problems the triple deck resolves and which computational techniques have been applied. This book presents a unified account of the development of laminar boundary layer theory as a historical study together with a description of the application of the ideas of triple deck theory to flow past a plate, to separation from a cylinder and to flow in channels. fm1 0: Local Analytic Geometry Theo de Jong, Gerhard Pfister, 2013-06-29 Algebraic geometry is, loosely speaking, concerned with the study of zero sets of polynomials (over an algebraically closed field). As one often reads in prefaces of int- ductory books on algebraic geometry, it is not so easy to develop the basics of algebraic geometry without a proper knowledge of commutative algebra. On the other hand, the commutative algebra one needs is quite difficult to understand without the geometric motivation from which it has often developed. Local analytic geometry is concerned with germs of zero sets of analytic functions, that is, the study of such sets in the neighborhood of a point. It is not too big a surprise that the basic theory of local analytic geometry is, in many respects, similar to the basic theory of algebraic geometry. It would, therefore, appear to be a sensible idea to develop the two theories simultaneously. This, in fact, is not what we will do in this book, as the commutative algebra one needs in local analytic geometry is somewhat more difficult: one has to cope with convergence questions. The most prominent and important example is the substitution of division with remainder. Its substitution in local analytic geometry is called the Weierstraft Division Theorem. The above remarks motivated us to organize the first four chapters of this book as follows. In Chapter 1 we discuss the algebra we need. Here, we assume the reader attended courses on linear algebra and abstract algebra, including some Galois theory. |

In particular, the 3D information is obtained from images for which the camera parameters are unknown. The principles underlying such uncalibrated structure-from-motion methods are outlined. First, a short review of 3D acquisition technologies puts such methods in a wider context, and highlights their important advantages. Then, the actual theory behind this line of research is given. The authors have tried to keep the text maximally self-contained, therefore also avoiding to rely on an extensive knowledge of the projective concepts that usually appear in texts about self-calibration 3D methods. Aertsen, 2012-12-06 The present collection of papers forms the Proceedings of the First Meeting on Brain Theory, held October 1-4, 1984 at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy. The Meeting was organized with the aim of bringing together brain theorists who are willing to put their own research in the perspective of the general development of neuroscience. Such a meeting was considered necessary since the explosion of experi mental work in neuroscience during the last decades has not been accompanied by an adequate development on the theoretical side. The intensity of the discussions during the Meeting is prob ably reflected best in the report of the organizers, reprinted here following the Preface. During the Meeting it was decided that a workshop of this kind should be repeated at regular intervals of approximately 2 years. The International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste has kindly agreed to act as host for future meetings. New estimation and testing approaches in empirical likelihood and general empirical likelihood, and Bootstrapping are presented. Model selection is also discussed in this book. In addition to the popular spatial autoregressive models, there are chapters on multivariate SAR models, simultaneous SAR models, and panel dynamic spatial models. Recent econometric developments on intertemporal spatial models with rational expectations and flows data in trade theory will also be included. In terms of statistics, classical estimation, testing and inference are the main concerns, and we provide classical inference for the justification of Bayesian simulation approaches. |

fm1 0: Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations Zhifen Zhang, 1992 Subriemannian geometries, also known as Carnot-Caratheodory geometries, can be viewed as limits of Riemannian geometries. They also arise in physical phenomenon involving ``geometric phases'' or holonomy. Very roughly speaking, a subriemannian geometry consists of a manifold endowed with a distribution (meaning a $k$-plane field, or subbundle of the tangent bundle), called horizontal together with an inner product on that distribution. If $k=n$, the dimension of the manifold, we get the usual Riemannian geometry. Given a subriemannian geometry, we can define the distance between two points just as in the Riemannian case, except we are only allowed to travel along the horizontal lines between two points. The book is devoted to the study of subriemannian geometries, their geodesics, and their applications. It starts with the simplest nontrivial example of a subriemannian geometry: the two-dimensional isoperimetric problem reformulated as a problem of finding subriemannian geodesics. Among topics discussed in other chapters of the first part of the book the author mentions an elementary exposition of Gromov's surprising idea to use subriemannian geometry for proving a theorem in discrete group theory and Cartan's method of equivalence applied to the problem of understanding invariants (diffeomorphism types) of distributions. There is also a chapter devoted to open problems. The second part of the book is devoted to applications of subriemannian geometry. In particular, the author describes in detail the following four physical problems: Berry's phase in quantum mechanics, the problem of a falling cat righting herself, that of a microorganism swimming, and a phase problem arising in the $N$-body problem. He shows that all these problems can be studied using the same underlying type of subriemannian geometry: that of a principal bundle endowed with $G$-invariant metrics. Reading the book requires introductory knowledge of differential geometry, and it can serve as a good introduction to this new, exciting area of mathematics. This book provides an introduction to and a comprehensive study of the qualitative theory of ordinary differential equations. It begins with fundamental theorems on existence, uniqueness, and initial conditions, and discusses basic principles in dynamical systems and Poincare-Bendixson theory. The authors present a careful analysis of solutions near critical points of linear and nonlinear planar systems and discuss indices of planar critical points. A very thorough study of limit cycles is given, including many results on quadratic systems and recent developments in China. Other topics included are: the critical point at infinity, harmonic solutions for periodic differential equations, systems of ordinary differential equations on the torus, and structural stability for systems on two-dimensional manifolds. fm1 0: Minimum Action Curves in Degenerate Finsler Metrics Matthias Heymann, 2015-07-08 Presenting a study of geometric action functionals (i.e., non-negative functionals on the space of unparameterized oriented rectifiable curves), this monograph focuses on the subclass of those functionals whose local action is a degenerate type of Finsler metric that may vanish in certain directions, allowing for curves with positive Euclidean length but with zero action. For such functionals, criteria are developed under which there exists a minimum action curve leading from one given set to another. Then the properties of this curve are studied, and the non-existence of minimizers is established in some settings. Applied to a geometric reformulation of the quasipotential of Wentzell-Freidlin theory (a subfield of large deviation theory), these results can yield the existence and properties of maximum likelihood transition curves between two metastable states in a stochastic process with small noise. The book assumes only standard knowledge in graduate-level analysis; all higher-level mathematical concepts are introduced along the way. |
