flagler health and rehabilitation center reviews: Radical Disciple Robert McClory, 2010-10-01 During the past twenty-six years, Reverend Michael Pfleger, a white Catholic priest who pastors a black Chicago parish, has never been far from the spotlight. His aggressive, innovative leadership has empowered thousands, making St. Sabina church one of the largest and most active black Catholic congregations in the country. At the same time, Pfleger has been continually criticized as a trouble-making maverick, a renegade cleric, and a publicity hound. This biography concentrates on Father Pfleger's work at St. Sabina from his earliest days there and covers his efforts to build up the parish, his activism, his work to rejuvenate the community, his battles with church leaders, and his strong relationship with his parishioners. It provides a fascinating look at the inner workings of the Catholic Church, the traditions of the black pulpit, and what it takes to change the laws in a major American city. Radical Disciple will be essential reading for anyone interested in social change and how a dynamic preacher and an involved church community can transform a city.
flagler health and rehabilitation center reviews: Empathy in Patient Care Mohammadreza Hojat, 2007-11-12 Human beings are designed by evolution to form meaningful interpersonal relationships through verbal and nonverbal communication. This principle is the same whether the individual is male or female; an infant, a child, an adolescent, or an adult; or healthy or sick. The theme that empathic human connections are beneficial to the body and mind underlies all 12 chapters of this book, in which empathy is viewed from a multidisciplinary perspective that includes evolution; neuropsychology; clinical, social, developmental, and educational psychology; and health care delivery and education. Some theoretical aspects of antecedents, development, and outcomes of empathy are discussed, and relevant studies and empirical findings are presented in support of the theoretical discussion. The following comments have been made about this book by experts and scholars: Dr. Hojat wisely provides an agenda for future research ranging from selecting prospective medical students for their empathy to evaluating the neurobiological components of empathy and compassion. Hojat’s utopia wisely provides goals which medical practitioners and teachers can ponder and try to reach for in their daily activities. We are in his debt. Howard Spiro, M.D., Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Yale University School of Medicine (Excerpted from the book’s foreword) This book is unique in combining an encyclopedic overview of empathy with a fine-grained, precise way of measuring it. Clinicians, researchers, students, and educators will find in this book both a resource for work already done and a blueprint for what still needs to be done. Herbert Adler, M.D., Ph.D., Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, Jefferson Medical College This book should be essential reading for all those engaged in medical education. The author writes clearly and covers the broad area of empathy, with theoretical depth and practical suggestions based on his ownresearch and that of others. He is a foremost leader in this field and his book sets a standard for all to follow. Marvin Zuckerman, Ph.D., Emeritus Professor of Psychology, University of Delaware This book is a scholarly achievement in the field. All will benefit from its comprehensiveness. Joseph Gonnella, M.D., Emeritus Dean and Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Jefferson Medical College This book is an outstanding contribution to the scholarly and clinical understanding of empathy. Most importantly, it combines conceptual rigor with an empirical foundation. Dr. Hojat has devoted himself to developing ways of measuring empathy, and in this book he combines his own findings with an encyclopedic knowledge of other relevant empirical work. This book will be important for any serious student of empathy, including medical educators who are seeking to truly transform professional training. Jodi Halpern, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor of Bioethics and Medical Humanities, University of California, Berkeley. Author of From Detached Concern to Empathy: Humanizing Medical Practice.

flagler health and rehabilitation center reviews: The Global Code Clotaire Rapaille, 2015-09-29 For decades, Clotaire Rapaille's work focused on how people's relationships with the most important concepts in their lives—love, health, and money, for instance—are guided by subconscious cultural messages. But recently, he has uncovered a new phenomenon: a global unconscious, or core values and feelings that are consistent worldwide—the result of our constant interconnectedness. He has also identified a new group who are paving the way for the future of decision-making: the Global Tribe. These individuals are fluent in the language of culture, untied to any notion of nationalism or ideology. They are defining the key values driving our new world economy, with profound implications for how companies market their products and services. Rapaille takes us on a journey through China, Brazil, India, England and everywhere in between to discover the new standards for luxury, pleasure, technology and education. How can elite brands compete in a world of knockoffs? How can universities maintain their prestige when a cheap master's degree or doctorate is only a click away? We must speak the language of the Global Tribe in order to succeed. Building on seven years of research, Rapaille analyzes how this new mindset has taken hold in various regions, and how marketers and service providers can tailor their offerings and marketing accordingly. The Global Code is an invaluable glimpse at how our new multi-sphere world is affecting us all.

flagler health and rehabilitation center reviews: Horticultural Therapy Methods Rebecca L. Haller, Christine L. Kramer, 2006-11-08 Widely accepted treatment methods using horticulture as a therapeutic modality Through the years, horticultural therapy (HT) has evolved from its use only by volunteer gardeners to become a recognized and respected therapeutic modality conducted by trained, registered professionals. Horticultural Therapy Methods: Making Connections in Health Care, Human Service, and Community Programs details the basics of the growing, time-proven practice of therapy through gardening. Experienced practitioners and educators discuss horticultural therapy theory, application, and the impressive positive impact it has on clients. Beginners are educated on key issues and given the tools needed to effectively treat clients. Horticultural therapy uses widely accepted treatment methods in a calming, creative program framework. Horticultural Therapy Methods challenges pre-conceived notions of the value of this treatment by describing the processes, techniques for practice, and the rationale for their use. This manual not only can be used as a reference and a guide for students but can also be used by educators and those conducting horticultural therapy to help construct effective treatment programs. Health care and human service professionals will find this resource a powerful ally in the therapy, treatment, and education of inmates, residents, patients, trainees, and students. Horticultural Therapy Methods is a clear helpful manual that explains: the types of programs, settings, and goals the process of treatment planning developing sessions—including activity or task selections to meet treatment objectives motivation and behavior management techniques documentation guidelines three types of HT programs resources for HT activity ideas practical approaches for mental health Horticultural Therapy Methods is a valuable addition to the literature and is crucial for all levels of horticultural therapists, occupational therapists, therapeutic recreational specialists, social workers, special educators, community horticulture leaders, horticulturists, mental health professionals of all types, and students.

flagler health and rehabilitation center reviews: A Delicate Relationship Kenton Clymer, 2016-02-19 In 2012, Barack Obama became the first U.S. president ever to visit Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. This official state visit marked a new period in the long and sinuous diplomatic relationship between the United States and Burma/Myanmar, which Kenton Clymer examines in A Delicate Relationship. From the challenges of decolonization and heightened nationalist activities that emerged in the wake of World War II to the Cold War concern with domino states to the rise of human rights policy in the 1980s and beyond, Clymer demonstrates how Burma/Myanmar has fit into the broad patterns of U.S. foreign policy and yet has never been fully integrated into diplomatic efforts in the region of Southeast Asia. When Burma, a British colony since the nineteenth century, achieved independence in 1948, the United States feared that the country might be the first Southeast Asian nation to fall to the communists, and it embarked on a series of efforts to prevent this. In 1962, General Ne Win, who toppled the government in a coup d’état, established an authoritarian socialist military junta that severely limited diplomatic contact and led to a period in which the primary American diplomatic concern became Burma’s increasing opium production. Ne Win’s rule ended (at least officially) in 1988, when the Burmese people revolted against the oppressive military government. Aung San Suu Kyi emerged as the charismatic leader of the opposition and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. Amid these great changes in policy and outlook, Burma/Myanmar remained fiercely nonaligned and, under Ne Win, isolationist. The limited diplomatic exchange that resulted meant that the state was often a frustrating puzzle to U.S. officials. Clymer explores attitudes toward Burma (later Myanmar), from anxious anticommunism during the Cold War to interventions to stop drug trafficking to debates in Congress, the White House, and the Department of State over how to respond to the emergence of the opposition movement in the late 1980s. The junta’s brutality, its refusal to relinquish power, and its imprisonment of opposition leaders resulted in public and Congressional pressure to try to change the regime. Indeed, Aung San Suu Kyi’s rise to prominence fueled the new foreign policy debate that was focused on human rights, and in that climate Burma/Myanmar held particularly large symbolic importance for U.S. policy makers. Congressional and public opinion favored sanctions, while U.S. presidents and their administrations were more cautious. Clymer’s account concludes with President Obama’s visits in 2012 and 2014, and visits to the United States by Aung San Suu Kyi and President Thein Sein, which marked the establishment of a new, warmer relationship with a relatively open Myanmar.

flagler health and rehabilitation center reviews: Transosseous Osteosynthesis Gavriil A. Ilizarov, 2011-12-21 This volume deals with the transosseous external fixation techniques that I have been developing over the course of the past 40 years. During this time, our research in medicine, biology and engineering has led to the evolution of more than 800 unique, highly effective methods of treatment that extend beyond the realm of traumatology and orthopedics. The book features a comprehensive theoretical and clinical description of the biologic laws governing the depen dence of the shape-forming processes of bones and joints upon the adequacy of blood supply, as well as a delineation of the effect of tension-stress upon the genesis and growth of tissues. I have in cluded our latest data on tissue growth and regeneration during transosseous osteosyntheses. The book summarizes the biomechanical principles of applica tion of my apparatus; clinical cases selected from more than 25000 patients illustrate the management of some of the most complex disorders of the locomotor system. New solutions to many therapeutic problems are described. In particular, severe limb trauma with large defects of bone, vessels, nerves and skin can be managed without resort to transplantation. Radical debridement surgery can be followed by a one-step restora tion of the missing tissue, thus decreasing the likelihood of a serious wound infection or an amputation.
