food and language discourses and foodways across cultures: Gastro-Postcolonialism Metaphyscial Symbols in Brand Communication Oya AYAN, 2023-09-05 This thesis brings together three topics that we want to search: brand communication, gastronomy, metaphysics. After completing my master’s degree in marketing communications, what I always had in mind was the new trends in advertising communication with the globalization of the 21st century. In the design of the advertisement, not only the use of elements in communication technologies, but also the philosophical background in its fabric attracted my attention. In this context, I began to sense that there might be mythological approaches in the chemistry of advertising messages that gained importance in social media. In the postmodern environment of the 21st century, food/nutrition, culinary arts and, to put it briefly, gastronomy became the dominant language of communication. Moreover, it caused kitchen wars by becoming politicized. In line with my interest in gastronomy, I wanted to focus on food advertisements. I started to ask myself to what extent the fast-food trend that marked the 21st century was changing the Global Society. Interestingly, I started to observe that there were metaphysical images that were reflected from ancient wisdom to the present day in McDonald’s brand communication. This problem, which has not been studied much yet, was an important exercise for me in terms of analyzing the Global Society as a doctoral thesis. I can say that doing the analysis in the light of semiology as a method has broadened my horizon by directing me to an interdisciplinary perspective. I would like to acknowledge Communication Sciences and the Internet Institute, which allowed me to make such a significant study, Prof. Dr. Mete Çamdereli, who supported me with great excitement in all phases of my thesis, Prof. Dr. Emine Yavaşgel, who made great contributions to deepen my research subjects in the monitoring of the thesis. But even though these events affect us all, some members of society are more vulnerable to harm than others. This essay collection explores how the definition of catastrophe might be expanded to include many forms of large-scale structural violence on communities, species, and ecosystems. Using feminist methodologies, the contributors to Public Catastrophes, Private Losses trace the connections between seemingly unrelated forms of violence such as structural racism, environmental degradation, and public health crises. In contrast to a news media that focuses on mass fatalities and immediate consequences, these essays call our attention to how catastrophes can also involve slow violence with long-term effects. Using ethnographic narratives, Parin Dossa makes a case for a paradigm shift from palliative care to social palliation. Experiences of displacement and resettlement reveal that life and death must be understood as an integrated unit if we are to appreciate what it is like to be awakened to our human existence. In the wake of structural exclusion and systemic suffering, social palliation brings to light displaced persons’ endeavours to restore the integrity of life and death. Dossa highlights the point that death conjoined with life is embedded within the socio-cultural and spiritual experience. Here, a caring society is not perceived in fragments, as is the case with traditional institutional care or care offered during end-of-life. The city's residents found themselves in the middle of conversations about food insecurity and justice when they reached the top of the Food Research and Action Center's list of major cities experiencing food hardship. Greensboro's local food communities chose to confront these high rates of food insecurity by engaging neighborhood voices, mobilizing creative resources at the community level, and sustaining conversations across the local food system. Within three years of reaching the peak of FRAC's list, Greensboro saw an 8 percent drop in its food hardship rate and moved from first to fourteenth in FRAC's list. Using eight case studies of food justice activism, from urban farms to mobile farmers markets, shared kitchens to food policy councils, Everybody Eats highlights the importance of communication—and communicating social justice specifically—in building the kinds of infrastructure needed to create secure and just food systems. |

The intersections of gastronomy and governance, dating in Spain to the last quarter of the nineteenth century, have become highly visible over the past decade, when political debates around nationalism in its different forms have taken the guise of discussions about regional and local cuisines. Concomitant with the rise of the “slow food” movement and following UNESCO’s addition in 2011 of “Gastronomic Meal of the French” to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, public and private associations all around Spain have been established with the goal of achieving recognition by UNESCO for Spanish, Catalan, and other national cuisines. In 2016, Gastro Marca España—an association and a web portal—was launched to raise the profile of food in Spain’s national brand. Eliciting wide public participation, co-opted for political purposes, regarded as a factor of economic development on any scale, and integrated into every so-called banal nationalism, the production, distribution, and consumption of food are highly relevant for historical analysis.
