fog island cafe breakfast: The Rumor Elin Hilderbrand, 2015-06-16 A friendship is tested in this thrilling page-turner from New York Times bestselling author Elin Hilderbrand (Us Weekly). Madeline King and Grace Pancik are best friends and the envy of Nantucket for their perfect marriages, their beautiful kids, their Saturday night double dates with their devoted husbands. But this summer, something's changed, and if there's anything Nantucket likes better than cocktails on the beach at sunset, it's a good rumor. And rumor has it... that Madeline, a novelist, is battling writer's block, with a deadline looming, bills piling up, and blank pages driving her to desperation — and a desperately bad decision; and that Grace, hard at work to transform her backyard into a garden paradise, has been collaborating a bit more closely than necessary with her ruggedly handsome landscape architect. As the gossip escalates, and they have the possible loss of the happy lives they've worked so hard to create, Grace and Madeline try mightily to set the record straight — but the truth might be even worse than rumor has it. |

fog island cafe breakfast: Death in a Cold Hard Light Francine Mathews, 2017-05-09 The fourth Merry Folger nantucket mystery After a trying case, detective Merry Folger begrudgingly agrees to take a leave from work to meet her fussy future in-laws in Greenwich, but it isn’t long before she is summoned back to Nantucket. The body of a 21-year-old was discovered in the frigid waters of the Sound in the days leading up to the annual Christmas celebration, and the death isn’t sitting well with Merry’s father, the local police chief, who fears the track marks on the victim’s arms may be indicative of a growing drug problem on the island. Feeling a constant need to live up to her father’s expectations, Merry rushes home to her fiancé, Peter’s, annoyance, only to find that heroin isn’t the only destructive force in Nantucket. Soon after Merry arrives, she feels stonewalled by her father. If he was so desperate for her help, why won’t he share the details of the case with her? What is he hiding? For the first time, Merry fears she cannot trust her lifelong role model—her own father—let alone figure out why a young athlete and Harvard scholar ended up dead in the frigid, storm-churned Sound. |

fog island cafe breakfast: Between the Tides Steve K. Bertrand, 2017-02-16 This collection of one thousand haiku entitled Between Tides was inspired by experiences gathered within what I refer to as the Bowl, that geographical region in the Pacific Northwest located between Mount Baker and Mount Rainier and the Cascade Mountains and the Olympic Peninsula. They are poems of mountain, air, forest, and sea. Some are written in the seventeen-syllable Japanese haiku tradition (5-7-5), but most follow a less structured or Americanized version of the form, which isnt uncommon among English translations of Japanese haiku. Haiku is the worlds shortest poem. One might say they are the worlds shortest story. Haiku captures either physical nature or human nature. They live in the moment. I liken the discovery of a haiku to finding sand dollars on a beach. I find haiku an excellent way to clarify and preserve experience. These poems have been influenced by studies in Zen Buddhism and Native American tradition. They are a celebration of the unique seasons and great wonders of the Pacific Northwest. |

fog island cafe breakfast: Dammit2 Jerry Baggett, 2018-11-26 Marine Major Dammit McGowin stared intently at photos taken from security cameras immediately after the bomb exploded inside Cinderella Children's Hospital. He could hear the children screaming. He felt the concussion, smelled the burning flesh, understanding firsthand what they were going through. Attractive Dr. Robin Goodrich missed the fairy-tale life she shared with the handsome tough guy returning from deployment. Her passion for Dammit exceeded only by her desire to treat underprivileged children needing medical care. Fawaz Abu-Sabra, the ruthless terrorist leader, believed himself unbeatable until he encountered the hard-principled Dammit, a man equally without mercy for those willing to slaughter innocent children and their caregivers. Terrorists seek refuge in Washington state's beautiful San Juan Islands. God only knows the depth of their sickness. |

fog island cafe breakfast: Under Surge, Under Siege Ellis Anderson, 2010-06-15 Winner of the 2010 Eudora Welty Book Prize and the Mississippi Library Association’s Nonfiction Author’s Award for 2011 Under Surge, Under Siege shows how Hurricane Katrina tore into Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, raking away lives, buildings, and livelihoods in a place known for its picturesque, coastal views; its laid-back, artsy downtown; and its deep-dyed southern cordiality. The tragedy also revealed the inner workings of a community with an indomitable heart and profound neighborly bonds. Those connections often brought out the best in people under the worst of circumstances. In Under Surge, Under Siege, Ellis Anderson, who rode out the storm in her Bay St. Louis home and sheltered many neighbors afterwards, offers stories of generosity, heroism, and laughter in the midst of terror and desperate uncertainty. Divided into two parts, this book invites readers into the intimate enclave before, during, and after the storm. “Under Surge” focuses on connections between residents, and then it demonstrates how those bonds sustained them through the worst hurricane in US history. “Under Siege” documents the first three years of the grinding aftermath, detailing the unforeseen burdens of stress and depression, insurance scandals, and opportunists that threatened to complete the annihilation of the plucky town. A blend of memoir, personal diary, and firsthand reportage, Under Surge, Under Siege creates a compelling American testament to the strength of the human spirit. |
