environment and art in catholic worship: Visual Arts in the Worshiping Church DeBoer, 2016 Although numerous studies have examined biblical and theological rationales for using the visual arts in worship, this book by Lisa J. DeBoer fills in a piece of the picture missing so far -- the social dimensions of both our churches and the various art worlds represented in our congregations. The first part of the book looks at Orthodoxy, Catholicism, and Protestantism in turn -- including case studies of specific congregations -- showing how each tradition's use of the visual arts reveals an underlying ecclesiology. DeBoer then focuses on six themes that emerge when Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant uses of the visual arts are examined together -- the arts as expressions of the church's local and universal character, the meanings attributed to particular styles of art for the church, the role of the arts in enculturating the gospel, and more. DeBoer's Visual Arts in the Worshiping Church will focus and deepen the thinking of pastors, worship leaders, artists, students, and laypeople regarding what the arts might do in the midst of their congregations.

In this volume, the bishops offer instruction on how to design places of worship that are dignified, beautiful, and suited to sacred celebrations.

environment and art in catholic worship: Lost in Wonder Aidan Nichols O. P., 2016-04-22 This book explores the Liturgy as the manifestation by cultic signs of Christian revelation, the 'setting' of the Liturgy in terms of architectural space, iconography and music, and the poetic response which the revelation the Liturgy carries can produce. The conclusion offers a synthetic statement of the unity of religion, cosmology and art. Aidan Nichols makes the case for Christianity's capacity to inspire high culture - both in principle and through well-chosen historical examples which draw on the best in Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy and Anglicanism.

environment and art in catholic worship: Religion and Art in the Heart of Modern Manhattan Aaron Rosen, 2017-07-28 When you're in New York the sculptor Louise Nevelson once said, you're in perpetual resurrection. She might have said the same thing about St. Peter's Lutheran Church, set in the heart of midtown Manhattan. In the 1970s the church made a radical move, scrapping its neo-gothic building for a sleek modern structure in the shadow of a skyscraper. The transformation was not just architectural. Inside, Nevelson created a shimmering chapel, while over the years artists and designers such as Willem de Kooning, Kiki Smith, and Massimo and Lella Vignelli produced works for the sanctuary. This fusion of modern art, architecture, and design was complemented by an innovative jazz ministry, including funerals for Billy Strayhorn and John Coltrane, and performances by Duke Ellington and other jazz legends. For the first time, this volume examines the astounding cultural output of this single church. Just as importantly, the story of St. Peter's serves as a springboard for wider reflections on the challenges and possibilities which arise when religion and art intersect in the modern city. Working from a wide range of disciplines, including art history, theology, musicology, and cultural studies, a distinguished group of scholars demonstrate that this church at the center of New York City deserves an equally central place in contemporary scholarship.

environment and art in catholic worship: Context and Text Kevin W. Irwin, 2018-07-12 One of the most influential works in the debate over the concept and definitions of liturgical theology, Context and Text by Monsignor Kevin W. Irwin is now available in a completely rewritten, new edition. In light of the historical, theological, and pastoral mandates of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Context and Text is both a proposal for and an example of an investigation of the Church's liturgical praxis from a liturgical-theological perspective. This second edition, which includes an expanded introduction, covers: · new liturgical and ecclesial contexts resulting from newly promulgated liturgies · further research in methodfor liturgical studies · consideration for changes in the cultural contexts in which people celebrate the liturgy. Besides brand-new chapters on time and sacramentality, and additions to the chapter on the arts, this edition also considers the “ongoing ‘texts and contexts’ of the liturgy as always a new event in the life and ongoing discussion of liturgical theology within Christianity.
environment and art in catholic worship: Architectural Actions on the Religious Heritage after Vatican II Esteban Fernández-Cobián, 2020-11-09 This book serves to shed some light on several controversial questions about contemporary interventions on religious heritage buildings. In the mid-1960s, a process of renewal of Catholic churches began, which sought to respond to the liturgical modifications implemented during the Vatican II (1962-65). Fifty years later, this process continues to be problematic in buildings with a high heritage or historical value. From an operational point of view, it is stimulating to revisit the most relevant architectures at the international level, those high-impact works that were generated thanks to an open and serene dialogue between principals, architects, users, artists and patrimonial leaders. Thus, it is essential to know the criteria that have supported interventions, whether legal (both ecclesiastical and civil), architectural, artistic, liturgical or pastoral. In this sense, what references could be used at a time like ours? How can we reform what has already been reformed?
environment and art in catholic worship: New Wine, Old Wineskins? Bryan Cones, 2025-06-01 Contributions to to this volume continue this year's reflections on the sixtieth anniversary of Sacrosanctum concilium. A recent trip home to Tennessee in the US highlighted for me the unusual moment we are occupy. When I grew up there in the 1970s and 1980s, many newly constructed churches reflected the signs of those times: contemporary architecture, fan-shaped seating, and a commitment to liturgy that reflected the culture we inhabited-for better and for worse! (I have always been a fan of a good guitar folk Mass though not of homemade felt banners.) Among those newish churches was Sacred Heart Cathedral in Knoxville, Tennessee, where I was baptised in 1973. It was admittedly not the finest example of mid-century attempts at churches, adorned by an unfortunate twenty-foot-tall painting (by a parishioner) of Jesus on the back wall, descending as if from the clouds. But in many respects, it reflected the community that built it, a small suburban Roman Catholic minority deep in the US Bible Belt. Fast forward to this third decade of the twenty-first century and an entirely different church sits on the same site. Rather than echoing the tentative footsteps of 1960s US Catholic modern architecture, it suggests instead the massive footprint of a Neoclassical European cathedral. Coming in at a cool US$58 million to construct, it dominates its neighborhood, dwarfing the Catholic school on campus and nearly consuming its predecessor-now the parish hall it was probably meant to be in the first place. The parish administrator noted that its grandeur has become the site of weekly 'destination weddings'. (Have a look: shcathedral.org.) It fairly screams 'Roman Catholic' in a place where Southern Baptist and other forms of Protestant evangelicalism remain the majority Christian expression. It does not, however, even whisper 'East Tennessee', whether in the famous marble and granite the state is known for or in reflections of our beloved Smoky Mountains. Nor is there reference to the Cherokee First Nation whose members still live in those mountains or space for the settler arts of Appalachia, whether music or textiles. The church is an import through and through, meant to signal a uniquely Catholic way of being, one quite different from the world around it.

environment and art in catholic worship: Pilgrim Journeys Ralph Leo Kleiter, 2021-11-25 Ralph Leo Kleiter, priest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon, Canada shares the unique story of one who experienced the time before the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) and the following years that energized him. With the help of his daily journal, files and memory he writes candidly and highlights his “steppingstones” and “turning points”. In twelve chapters, with meticulous details, his narrative outlines his rural Saskatchewan formation and religious institutional education; the background and interesting events in all the parishes he served; and his global experiences and outreach through a Ministry to Tourism he established. In several sections, the reader will be able to really feel the author’s presence within the narrative. The most compelling and intriguing aspects of the author’s story are: •The “behind-the-scenes” accounts within church ministry, from the pre-Vatican II schooling to his faith-related struggles within the structures of the church. Some readers can attain a deeper appreciation of their role in the church and the author hopes that his story might serve as a teaching vehicle for clergy and laity. •His approaches in parish and health-care ministries, as well as his visionary personal charism in developing a “Spirituality in Travel” and a “Ministry to Tourism”. Most evident, is his belief that the sacred is all around, making our leisure time matter in a spiritual way. The reader will be especially impressed in a final chapter presenting the richness of his travels and how life-changing they were because of his organization and determination. Fr. Kleiter has written a voluminous Memoir, enhanced with over one-hundred and twenty colour photographs in a pleasing volume of classic design. The work is a worthwhile read, because it describes a priest with a mission during the challenging years of reading the “signs of the times”. By understanding the past, we can move into the future.

environment and art in catholic worship: Principles of Sacred Liturgy Christopher Carstens, 2020-01-27 Jesus’ saving Paschal work continues today in the liturgy and sacraments. They have the power to sanctify and beatify those who engage the liturgy with proper minds and hearts. In this comprehensive and accessible book, Christopher Carstens opens up the ritual elements mystagogically: that is, he leads participants from what they can sense—a calendar day, a musical instrument, and word—to what is otherwise undetectable: Jesus Christ. He examines the core meaning of each liturgical element in creation, in the culture, in the Old Testament, in Christ, and in heaven. This book is an excellent resource for pastors, seminarians, permanent deacons and deacon candidates, lay ministers, and parish liturgy coordinators.
environment and art in catholic worship: Building from Belief Michael E. DeSanctis, 2017-06-15 Imagine what Sundays in a parish could be if worshiping communities are assured that the liturgy in their spaces might be a foretaste of the heavenly liturgy. Or what town-hall meetings could also be in a place where parish committees are inspired to know that they can be the instruments of truth and beauty. The essays in Building from Belief focus on Catholic church architecture and invite those who are involved in the creation of worship space to be the world's memory of what beauty looks like, and what sanctity feels like. In Building from Belief, Michal DeSanctis treats a variety of topics that concern the creation and use of liturgical space. He brings the historical development of both the Church and its architecture into clear view and focuses on the need for catechesis and conversion. DeSanctis calls for a change of heart on the part of the worshiping community, the building committee, professionals involved in the design process, and of the Church. By keeping the theological concepts of grace and sacramentality in mind, he offers rich insights to these fundamental Christian realities and provides hope and excitement about using the gifts of beauty, grace, and holiness. The essays in Building from Belief are an invitation to build the promised kingdom, allowing the grace of God into our hearts and in our spaces. DeSanctis encourages those who embark on the journey of building to ask the same question that the Fathers of Vatican II asked: how to be Church in a modern world. He shows that the worship that rises from our communities is indeed a true expression of that belief. Chapters under Part I are *Beauty, Holiness and Liturgical Space, - *Catholic Sacramentality and the Reform of Sacred Architecture, - *The Pastoral Dimension of Church Renovation, - *Let's Stop Renovating Church Buildings (And Start Renovating the Church), - and *Coming to Terms with Modern Design. - Chapters under Part II are *Worshiping in 'No place': Casual Observations on Liturgy in the Second Machine Age, - *Images By Which We Live and Build, - and *The Quest for 'Noble Simplicity.'- Includes eight pages of full-color photographs with black-and-white photographs and illustrations throughout.   environment and art in catholic worship: Called to Preside Theresa Cotter, 2005-07-29 Called to Preside is a complete guide to the art and craft of presiding at public prayer. Theresa Cotter lays a solid groundwork for those new to the study of liturgy and encourages novice presiders with numerous suggestions for practicing presiding skills. This handbook will serve as an invaluable reference and resource throughout your presiding ministry. Topics include: -the call to preside; -common words with special meanings in the context of liturgy; -the presider as a person of prayer; -signs and symbols; -liturgical essentials; -methods to sharpen presiding skills; -the public prayer of the faith community; -tips for meeting ongoing presiding challenges; -a wealth of resources for continued growth and learning. In the introduction, Cotter writes, ÒWe need to learn about liturgy, about symbols, rituals, and rites. We need to learn about presiding and practice its skills. We need to evaluate our own giftedness and remain open to the workings of the Holy Spirit. Above all we need to pray. . . . This handbook will help in both the discerning process and the learning process. It can enable us to respond with wisdom, courage, generosity, confidence, and enthusiasm. If our call to preside is authentic, the Spirit will ignite within us a desire to preside and to preside well. The most tentative maybe will be transformed into an enthusiastic yes.Ó
environment and art in catholic worship: Wildflowers and the Call to the Altar Skya Abbate, 2018-12-13 Wildflowers and the Call to the Altar is a fascinating story of the history of the St. Francis Altar Society, embedded within the tri-cultural nexus of Santa Fe, New Mexico. For close to a hundred years, the society responded to the call that the church, established in 1610, required a formal Altar Society to care for the sanctuary needs, yet also to address the personal sanctification of the members. Since its inception, the society has served the altar of the church and extended its vision to “the altar of the world” through works of social justice, which are more urgent than ever, along with the care of the altar and the laundry. There is room for the holiness and fidelity of women to serve the church. Under the mantle of humility, and the commitment to mission, the women of the St. Francis Altar Society have persisted like the women at the foot of the cross. They have embraced the call to ministry and discipleship extended to all in the Gospels. Service to the altar extends into the world, where the reality of the love of Christ intersects with everyday life.
environment and art in catholic worship: A Struggle for Holy Ground C. Michael Weldon, 2004 A Struggle for Holy Ground results from thirty-five interviews with participants in the 1989 consolidations of then parishes in Chicago's Englewood and two parishes from the San Francisco consolidations after its 1989 earthquake. It explores the roles of ritual and pastoral care in this sometimes highly conflicted situation through the lens of trauma and reconciliation. It proposes a series of new rites: group reconciliation, atonement, lament, leave-taking, memorial, and inauguration based on the experience of people most impacted by parish restructurings.
environment and art in catholic worship: An Architecture of Immanence Mark A. Torgerson, 2007-01-22 Torgerson begins by discussing God's transcendence and immanence and showing how church architecture has traditionally interpreted these key concepts. He then traces the theological roots of immanence's priority from liberal theology and liturgical innovation to modern architecture. Next, Torgerson illustrates this new architecture of immanence through particular practitioners, focusing especially on the work of theologically savvy architect Edward Anders Sövik. Finally, he addresses the future of church architecture as congregations are buffeted by the twin forces of liturgical change and postmodernism.
