In this controversial book, an eminent politician who is also a distinguished classical scholar refutes this idea, using textual and literary criticism to assert that the Gospel of Matthew preceded the other gospels. Translating and analysing the original Greek source, Powell proceeds to concentrate upon the text of Matthew, as being the earliest form of the gospel that we possess, and to demonstrate how its peculiar characteristics can best be accounted for as being the result of insertions and manipulations, often theologically motivated. Powell argues that the Gospel of Matthew represents an attempted compromise between a pro-gentile book and a critical revision of that book produced for the judaising wing of the early Church, and that material intended to appeal to the followers of John the Baptist was also introduced. The Gospel of Matthew, though given the form of consecutive narrative, is, says Powell, essentially a theological debate carried on by means of allegory: was Jesus the Son of God or a Davidic king?

As I began to read chapters 71-82, I found to my utter amazement that I was able to grasp those passages. I knew then that the vision that the angel Uriel had shown to Enoch could only be deciphered if one were to imagine Enoch's description of the revolution of the sun and the moon. As seen from above the flat circular plane of the earth as described by Isaiah; and that Enoch must have been taken up to perhaps where Polaris is, centered directly above the North Pole, and while looking down at the backdrop of the earth, was instructed on the motions of both the sun and moon. Without such conception, it is in my opinion impossible to apply these descriptions to the model of the earth as a spherical planet.

It is thought to have been based on The Book of Enoch, a pseudepigraphical Jewish work from the 3rd century BCE, which was based on Genesis 6:1-4. The Book of Giants, like The Book of Enoch, concerns itself with the nephilim, which, in the Enoch version, are the offspring of human women and fallen angels, who are called the Watchers.The angels saw the beauty of the daughters of men. The broke their allegiance to heaven, descended to Earth, and married the women, and thus fathered giants. The Book of Giants attempts to fill in the details about the nephilim, giants and their offspring that the Book of Enoch is lacking. The text relates how some giants, named Ohya, Hahya and Mahway, sons of the fallen angels, were compelled to dream. In these dreams they foresaw the Biblical Deluge, and their own demise. The mention of Enoch and the storyline referencing the patriarch places The Book of Giants firmly in the list of Enochian texts, along with 1 Enoch, 2 Enoch, and 3 Enoch, also known as The Ethiopic Book of Enoch, The Slavonic Secrets of Enoch, and The Hebrew Book of Enoch respectively. This Volume presents the complete The Book of Giants, placed back into its original context within The First Book of Enoch, along with notes and commentary.
