erwin ramsdell goodenough: Myth for Moderns Eleanor Bustin Mattes, 1997-11-25 Erwin Goodenough is known primarily as an historian of religion whose writings on Philo Judaeus and Jewish symbols have had a major impact on the study of Judaism through their emphasis on the existence of multiple Judaisms, especially Hellenistic. However, he was also a pioneer in regarding sex as integrally related to the spiritual. His insistence on the value of 'myth' for moderns in 1937 anticipated Joseph Campbell's development of that thesis and his popular television talks on the subject with Bill Moyers. To see how Goodenough came to these views it is necessary to follow the course of his life, as it determined the directions his scholarship took and his conclusions. We gain insight as we trace his personal journey, from the fundamentalist Methodist upbringing through his introduction to the Harvard Divinity School's empiricism, his first marriage and the years at Oxford, his relationships with Tom French, Carl Jung, Erik Erikson, and his divorce and remarriage. erwin ramsdell goodenough: Imperialism and Jewish Society Seth Schwartz, 2009-02-09 This provocative new history of Palestinian Jewish society in antiquity marks the first comprehensive effort to gauge the effects of imperial domination on this people. Probing more than eight centuries of Persian, Greek, and Roman rule, Seth Schwartz reaches some startling conclusions--foremost among them that the Christianization of the Roman Empire generated the most fundamental features of medieval and modern Jewish life. Schwartz begins by arguing that the distinctiveness of Judaism in the Persian, Hellenistic, and early Roman periods was the product of generally prevailing imperial tolerance. From around 70 C.E. to the mid-fourth century, with failed revolts and the alluring cultural norms of the High Roman Empire, Judaism all but disintegrated. However, late in the Roman Empire, the Christianized state played a decisive role in ''re-Judaizing'' the Jews. The state gradually excluded them from society while supporting their leaders and recognizing their local communities. It was thus in Late Antiquity that the synagogue-centered community became prevalent among the Jews, that there re-emerged a distinctively Jewish art and literature--laying the foundations for Judaism as we know it today. Through masterful scholarship set in rich detail, this book challenges traditional views rooted in romantic notions about Jewish fortitude. erwin ramsdell goodenough: Art and Architecture of the Synagogue in Byzantine Palaestina Asaf Friedman, 2019-05-24 The Byzantine era was a time of the formation of the Abrahamic religions and a battleground for people’s hearts and minds. This book shows that, during the time of the Byzantine Empire, the synagogues in Palaestina developed a visual language adhering to traditional literary sources. Until now, scholars believed that Judaism was oblivious to all art forms, regarding them as mere “decoration.” This book shows that, contrary to those beliefs, Jewish art was, in fact, flourishing in this period. The visual language that emerged is a trope that utilizes literal and figurative readings to arrive at an inquisitive mixture—a probing language that facilitates learning. It is a visual language of “becoming,” of inward introspection and outward scrutiny. This new analysis goes beyond the limits of compositional rules, and requires an analytical, as well as emotive, thought process, to form a cultural interpretation that reveals the hidden language. This means that some parts of Judaism and some parts of Christianity were in agreement despite the commandment of “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image,” and operated under the assumption that paintings were not necessarily the creation of idols. Thus, we see that the modern movements of art and architecture were not the first to deal with images through themes such as abstraction and denotation. The language developed during the Byzantine period could rival the best of such visual languages. |
