electrical transport in solids: Fast Ion Transport in Solids Bruno Scrosati, Aldo Magistris, C.M. Mari, G. Mariotto, 1993-10-31 The main motivation for the organization of the Advanced Research Workshop in Belgirate was the promotion of discussions on the most recent issues and the future perspectives in the field of Solid State lonics. The location was chosen on purpose since Belgirate was the place were twenty years ago, also then under the sponsorship of NATO, the very first international meeting on this important and interdisciplinary field took place. That meeting was named Fast Ion Transport in Solids and gathered virtually everybody at that time having been active in any aspect of motion of ions in solids. The original Belgirate Meeting made for the first time visible the technological potential related to the phenomenon of the fast ionic transport in solids and, accordingly, the field was given the name Solid State lonics. This field is now expanded to cover a wide range of technologies which includes chemical sensors for environmental and process control, electrochromic windows, mirrors and displays, fuel cells, high performance rechargeable batteries for stationary applications and electrotraction, chemotronics, semiconductor ionics, water electrolysis cells for hydrogen economy and other applications. The main idea for holding an anniversary meeting was that of discussing the most recent issues and the future perspectives of Solid State lonics just twenty years after it has started at the same location on the lake Maggiore in North Italy.

electrical transport in solids: Electrical Properties of Solids T. F. Connolly, 2012-12-06 Since 1963 the Research Materials Information Center has been answering inquiries on the availability, preparation, and properties of ultrapure inorganic research specimens. It has been possible to do this with reasonable efficiency by searching an automated coded microfilm collection of the report and open literature and of data sheets and question naires provided by commercial and research producers of pure materials. With the growth of the collection to over 70,000 documents and the increase in the demand for more general background information, it has been necessary to compile bibliographies on an increasing variety of subjects. These have been used as indexes to the microfilmed documents for more efficient searching, and in the past distributed in response to individual requests. However, their size and number no longer permit so casual and uneconomic a method of distribution. The ORNL Solid State Physics Literature Guides is a practical alternative. Organization The subject organization of the bibliography is given by the Table of Contents. Each section is preceded by a collection of reviews, bibliographies, and general papers (i.e., those dealing with methods or equipment rather than single materials, or with such a wide variety of materials that no subsection was appropriate). Coverage is generally from 1960 to mid-1970. Emphasis is on inorganic materials.

electrical transport in solids: Electrons in Solids 2e Richard Bube, 2012-12-02 Electrons in Solids, Second Edition: An Introductory Survey introduces the reader to electrons in solids and covers topics ranging from particles and waves to the free electron model, energy bands, and junctions. Optical and electrical properties are also discussed, along with magnetic properties. The wavelike properties of all of matter are chosen as an integrating theme into which to weave such themes as crystal lattice vibrations (with their effect on electron mobility and electrical and thermal conductivity), electromagnetic waves (with their effect on optical reflection and absorption), and electronic transport in solids (with its dependence on the wavelike properties of electrons). This book is comprised of 11 chapters and begins with an overview of particles and waves, together with classical views of electrons, light, and energy. The general properties of waves are then discussed, with particular reference to traveling waves, standing waves, transverse waves, and longitudinal waves. Lattice waves, light waves, and matter waves are also considered. The reader is also introduced to wave equations, boundary conditions, and general wave properties. The remaining chapters are devoted to optical, electrical, and magnetic properties as well as junctions, including metal-metal junctions, metal-semiconductor junctions, and metal-semiconductor junctions. This monograph is intended for undergraduates and first-year graduate students with a background primarily in materials science, metallurgy, or one of the other engineering disciplines.

electrical transport in solids: Carrier Scattering in Metals and Semiconductors V.F. Gantmakher, Y.B. Levinson, 2012-12-02 The transport properties of solids, as well as the many optical phenomena in them are determined by the scattering of current carriers. ``Carrier Scattering in Metals and Semiconductors'' elucidates the state of the art in the research on the scattering mechanisms for current carriers in metals and semiconductors and describes experiments in which these mechanisms are most dramatically manifested. The selection and organization of the material is in a form to prepare the reader to reason independently and to deal just as independently with available theoretical results and experimental data. The subjects dealt with include: - electronic transport theory based on the test-particle and correlation-function concepts; - scattering by phonons, impurities, surfaces, magnons, dislocations, electron-electron scattering and electron temperature; - two-phonon scattering, spin-flip scattering, scattering in degenerate and many-band models.
electrical transport in solids: Understanding Properties of Atoms, Molecules and Materials Pranab Sarkar, Sankar Prasad Bhattacharyya, 2022-02-17 In a technology driven civilization the quest for new and smarter materials is everlasting. They are required as platforms for developing new technologies or for improving an already existing technology. The discovery of a new material is no longer chance driven or accidental, but is based on careful reasoning structured by deep understanding of the microconstituents of materials - the atoms and molecules in isolation or in an assembly. That requires fair amount of exposure to quantum and statistical mechanics. `Understanding Properties of Atoms, Molecules and Materials' is an effort (perhaps the first ever) to bring all the necessary theoretical ingredients and relevant physical information in a single volume. The book introduces the readers (first year graduates) or researchers in material chemistry/engineering to elementary quantum mechanics of atoms, molecules and solids and then goes on to make them acquainted with methods of statistical mechanics (classical as well as quantum) along with elementary principles of classical MD simulation. The basic concepts are introduced with clarity and illustrated with easy to grasp examples, thus preparing the readers for an exploration through the world of materials - the exotic and the mundane. The emphasis has been on the phenomena and what shapes them at the fundamental level. A comprehensive description of modern designing principles for materials with examples is a unique feature of the book. The highlights of the book are comprehensive introduction and analysis of Quantum states of atoms and molecules The translational symmetry and quantum states in periodic and amorphous solids Band structure and tuning Classical and quantum statistics with applications to ideal gases (photons, phonons and electrons, molecules) Quantum states in type-I and type-II superconductors (elementary theory included) Magnetic materials, materials with GMR and CMR Shape memory effects in alloys and materials 2D materials (graphene and graphene analogus) NLO and photovoltaic materials Hydrogen storage material for mitigating the looming energy crisis Quantum states in low and high band gap semiconductors Semimetals Designer materials, etc. The volume is designed and organized to create interest in the science of materials and the silent revolution that is redefining the goals and boundaries of materials science continuously.

electrical transport in solids: Solid-State Physics Harald Ibach, Hans Lüth, 2013-04-18 Our German textbook Festkorperphysik has meanwhile appeared in its th nd 6 edition, extensively revised and extended in comparison to the latest 2 English edition. Presently, the book has been translated into Japanese, Kor ean and Polish and is used as a standard text in many universities around the world. It is therefore high time to carefully revise the English text and th bring it up to par with the latest 6 German edition. The sections on High Temperature Superconductors as well as Panel XVI on Shubnikov-de Haas Oscillations and Quantum Hall Effect are completely revised accord rd ing to the present deeper understanding of the phenomena. This 3 English edition has furthermore been expanded by several chapters to meet the edu cational requirements for recent fields of research. We let ourselves be guided by the idea that modern teaching of solid state physics emphasizes aspects of material science and its applications, in particular in solid state electronics. Accordingly, deviations from the ideal periodic solid have gained more weight in the text: we now consider phase diagrams of alloys, some basics of defect physics and amorphous solids. Because of the impor tance of strained layer systems in device physics, inclusion of the funda mentals of crystal elasticity theory seems (again) necessary, so a new chap ter is devoted to this topic.

electrical transport in solids: Electron Transport in Compound Semiconductors B.R. Nag, 2012-12-06 Discovery of new transport phenomena and invention of electron devices through exploitation of these phenomena have caused a great deal of interest in the properties of compound semiconductors in recent years. Extensive re search has been devoted to the accumulation of experimental results, par ticularly about the artificially synthesised compounds. Significant ad vances have also been made in the improvement of the related theory so that the values of the various transport coefficients may be calculated with suf ficient accuracy by taking into account all the complexities of energy band structure and electron scattering mechanisms. Knowledge about these deve lopments may, however, be gathered only from original research contributions, scattered in scientific journals and conference proceedings. Review articles have been published from time to time, but they deal with one particular material or a particular phenomenon and are written at an advanced level. Available text books on semiconductor physics, do not cover the subject in any detail since many of them were written decades ago. There is, there fore, a definite need for a book, giving a comprehensive account of electron transport in compound semiconductors and covering the introductory material as well as the current work. The present book is an attempt to fill this gap in the literature. The first chapter briefly reviews the history of the developement of compound semiconductors and their applications. It is also an introduction to the contents of the book.

electrical transport in solids: An Introduction to Electronic and Ionic Materials Wei Gao, Nigel M. Sammes, 1999 The subject of electronic and ionic materials has grown rapidly over the last 20 to 30 years. The application of these materials has had a significant impact on modern industries and on society in general. The subject is so important that no electrical engineering, materials science and engineering, applied physics or chemistry degree would be complete without it. This valuable textbook is aimed at engineering and technology undergraduates who have a background in physics or chemistry only at first year level. It provides a basic understanding of the properties and uses of a wide range of electrically and ionically conducting materials. It is not intended to be a solid state physics or chemistry book, and so the mathematics is kept to a minimum. However, it is intended to give the student an overview of a wide range of electrical materials and their uses in today's society.

electrical transport in solids: The Physics and Chemistry of Solids Stephen Elliott, 1998-09-16 Taking an original, imaginative approach to the subject, Stephen Elliott's book is one of the first to bridge the gap between solid state physics and chemistry. Considerable thought has gone into the structure and content of this book, with the first four chapters covering the properties of atoms in solids and the remaining four concentrating on the behaviour of electrons in materials. Fundamental principles are covered together with the very latest developments, such as combinatorial library synthesis, mesoporous materials, fullerenes and nanotubes, optical localization and the experimental observation of fractional electronic charge. Clearly written and richly illustrated, The Physics and Chemistry of Solids will be of great interest to Physicists, Chemists, Material Scientists and Engineers.
electrical transport in solids: Defects in Solids N. Hannay, 2012-12-06 The last quarter-century has been marked by the extremely rapid growth of the solid-state sciences. They include what is now the largest subfield of physics, and the materials engineering sciences have likewise flourished. And, playing an active role throughout this vast area of science and engineer ing have been very large numbers of chemists. Yet, even though the role of chemistry in the solid-state sciences has been a vital one and the solid-state sciences have, in turn, made enormous contributions to chemical thought, solid-state chemistry has not been recognized by the general body of chemists as a major subfield of chemistry. Solid-state chemistry is not even well defined as to content. Some, for example, would have it include only the quantum chemistry of solids and would reject thermodynamics and phase equilibria; this is nonsense. Solid-state chemistry has many facets, and one of the purposes of this Treatise is to help define the field. Perhaps the most general characteristic of solid-state chemistry, and one which helps differentiate it from solid-state physics, is its focus on the chemical composition and atomic configuration of real solids and on the relationship of composition and structure to the chemical and physical properties of the solid. Real solids are usually extremely complex and exhibit almost infinite variety in their compositional and structural features.
electrical transport in solids: Solid State Theory Ulrich Rössler, 2013-06-29 Solid-State Theory - An Introduction is a textbook for graduate students of physics and material sciences. Whilst covering the traditional topics of older textbooks, it also takes up new developments in theoretical concepts and materials that are connected with such breakthroughs as the quantum-Hall effects, the high-Tc superconductors, and the low-dimensional systems realized in solids. Thus besides providing the fundamental concepts to describe the physics of the electrons and ions comprising the solid, including their interactions, the book casts a bridge to the experimental facts and gives the reader an excellent insight into current research fields. A compilation of problems makes the book especially valuable to both students and teachers.
electrical transport in solids: Thin Film and Flexible Thermoelectric Generators, Devices and Sensors Sergey Skipidarov, Mikhail Nikitin, 2021-03-13 This book presents and facilitates new research and development results with hot topics in the thermoelectric generators (TEGs) field.
