esko fun days 2023: Cardiff After Dark Maciej Dakowicz, 2012 Cardiff After Dark is the first monograph by British-based Polish photographer Maciej Dakowicz. Dakowicz spent five years photographing the nighttime revelries that take place in Cardiff over the weekend. Focused around a few pedestrianized streets in the city centre, Dakowicz's images capture nightlife fueled by alcohol and emotions. The arc of an evening's entertainment is captured in these candid photographs, which reveal fun and hilarity as well as fighting and drunken exhaustion. There are stag nights and hen parties, men dressed as superheroes and women dressed as Playboy bunnies, mountains of discarded chip wrappers, arrests by the police, and lots and lots of posing for photographs. Dakowicz's images, at times shocking or upsetting, form an important documentary photobook of British urban life in the early part of the 21st century. |

esko fun days 2023: #ICP Concerned David Campany, 2021-10 On March 13, 2020 when the global coronavirus pandemic brought life as we know it to an abrupt halt, the International Center of Photography, just weeks after opening in a brand-new building on Manhattan'ss Lower East Side that was buzzing with visitors, was forced to close its doors. Wanting to do more than virtual exhibition tours, ICP announced the #ICPConcerned open call on March 20th, an invitation for people to make, upload, and tag images on Instagram of whatever was going on in their lives wherever they were. What resulted was more than sixty thousand submissions from countries as far flung as France, Singapore, Argentina, Nigeria, Canada, and Iran. From the halls of medical facilities to eerily empty streets and domestic settings converted into home offices and classrooms, the more than 800 photographs collected here are organized chronologically and accompanied by headlines gathered from various global news entities. Taken together, these words and pictures represent the pain, heartbreak, hope, and occasional humor we've all experienced this past year against the backdrop of COVID-19, unrelenting racial injustice, and a divisive political climate. We normally model such networks as graphs: sets of nodes connected by sets of edges and a number of node and edge attributes. This deceptively simple object is the starting point of never-ending complexity, due to its ability to represent almost every facet of reality: chemical interactions, protein pathways inside cells, neural connections inside the brain, scientific collaborations, financial relations, citations in art history, just to name a few examples.
