experimentator: Solubility Phenomena in The Context of Nuclear Waste Disposal Xavier Gaona, Sarah Saslow, Hye-Ryun Cho, Taishi Kobayashi, Bernd Grambow, 2023-12-13 Safety concepts regarding nuclear waste disposal in underground repositories generally rely on a combination of engineered and geological barriers that minimize potential radionuclide release out of the containment-providing rock zone and transport through the biosphere. The presence of water, however, may alter the engineered barrier system, dissolve radionuclides, and facilitate radionuclide transport that over time may permeate the biosphere. So while barrier systems aim to prevent or hinder water from contacting the waste, the possible intrusion of aqueous solutions must be considered for several safety case scenarios impacted by the long-term evolution of a repository. Dissolution and solubility phenomena thus arise as important processes controlling the chemical behaviour of radionuclides and other key materials of relevance in the context of such repositories and their safety assessments. The solubility and aqueous speciation of radionuclides is of particular interest as they provide upper limits of water-transportable concentrations of radionuclides. Solubility phenomena of radioactive and other gases in water provide important information on gas transport and pressure build-up. Moreover, solubility assessments offer insight into time-independent constraints on the evolution of the disposal system. Particularly important in this regard is the geochemical modelling of radionuclide behaviour in the engineered barrier system as well as in natural aquatic systems along the transport path of radionuclides to the biosphere. The obtained information provides valuable inputs that appropriately constrain safety analyses of nuclear waste disposal. |

The author shows how binocular vision was one of the key juncture points between the three concepts and readers will see how important it is to understand the approach that scholars once took. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the concept of Perspectiva – the Latin word for optics – encompassed many areas of enquiry that had been viewed since antiquity as interconnected, but which afterwards were separated: optics was incorporated into the field of physics (i.e., physical and geometrical optics), vision came to be regarded as the sum of various psycho-physiological mechanisms involved in the way the eye operates (i.e., physiological optics and psychology of vision) and the word ‘perspective’ was reserved for the mathematical representation of the external world (i.e., linear perspective). The author shows how this division, which emerged as a result of the spread of the sciences in classical Europe, turns out to be an anachronism if we confront certain facts from the immediately preceding periods. It is essential to take into account the way medieval scholars posed the problem – which included all facets of the Latin word perspectiva – when exploring the events of this period. This book will appeal to a broad readership, from philosophers and historians of science, to those working in geometry, optics, ophthalmology and architecture. |

Marcel van der Voort, mediëvist én liefhebber en kenner van slangen, heeft de elf overgeleverde handschriften van Der nature bloeme onderzocht en is tot de conlusie gekomen dat de Londense codex het meest compleet is en het dichtst bij Maerlants Latijnse bron staat. Het is dan ook het serpentenboek uit deze codex dat Van der Voort in een kritische leeseditie presenteert. De editie is voorzien van commentaar, zodat de tekst ook voor niet-ingewijden begrijpelijk is. In zijn inleidende studie behandelt Van der Voort de onderlinge verhoudingen van de codices, doet hij verslag van zijn speurtocht naar het beste handschrift en geeft hij een uitvoerige beschrijving van de Londense codex en van Maerlants vertaaltechniek. In de 'herpetologische glossen' geeft hij een biologische verklaring voor de merkwaardige eigenschappen die Maerlant aan serpenten toeschrijft. En passant maakt de lezer kennis met de rijke cultuurhistorie van slangen. Vor allem in den naturwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen Mathematik und Physik ist das Konzept „Raum“ essenzieller Bestandteil der Forschung, er wurde aber auch durch geisteswissenschaftliche Disziplinen wie die Philosophie immer wieder betrachtet und analysiert. Für die dagegen relativ junge Forschung im Bereich der Kognitionspsychologie ist vor allem die Frage interessant, wie der Raum von uns als Handlungsumgebung wahrgenommen wird.
