Crew, 2015-09-16 The Ku Klux Klan has received much attention for its violent activities, but comparatively little research has been done on its musical legacy. The printed music that still exists is spread throughout the nation in both public and private collections. This work presents, chronologically, the music associated with the Klan from 1867 to 2002, thus enabling readers to sense the arguments and attitudes of the Klan as they developed and changed over time. Because of the relative scarcity of Klan-related music, non-Klan music that mentions the word Klan is included. These obscure references help place the Klan in a larger social perspective and are very important in documenting anti-Klan musical reaction. In instances where a song merely mentions the Klan, usually in only one verse or in the chorus, then only that verse containing the Klan reference, plus appropriate context, is included. The catalogue also includes Klan-related music that does not have lyrics, such as marches, waltzes, two-steps, and several Klan-related pieces that were published in Europe. Sheet music was virtually nonexistent after the 1930s, so in order to capture a feeling of Klan-related music today, a limited discography of Klan-related recordings from 1920 to 2002 is also included. |

every praise trumpet sheet music: Three Choirs Anthony Boden, 1992 Three Choirs is the oldest surviving music festival in Europe; the custom of an annual Music Meeting of the cathedral choirs of Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester dates back to the early years of the eighteenth century. Since that time a continuous tradition of music-making, which only two world wars have interrupted, has been maintained in the three cities. In this book, the first official and in-depth history of Three Choirs for almost forty years, Anthony Boden investigates the origins of the Festival and describes its development, its traditions and the important personalities and events with which it has been linked. Initially, the Festival consisted of two services and two concerts; gradually the meetings were extended in duration and scope. Throughout its history the Festival has been the occasion of many musical landmarks: Parry's Scenes from Prometheus Unbound, first performed at Gloucester in 1880, has been identified as the work which gave initial impetus to the musical renaissance in England, and ten years later, at Worcester, the creative genius of Edward Elgar was first acknowledged when he conducted the premiere of his Froissart overture. It was also at Gloucester, in 1910, that Ralph Vaughan Williams, making his Three Choirs debut, conducted the first performance of his Tallis Fantasia. In this important book, extensively researched, Anthony Boden presents a vivid and entertaining history of Three Choirs. The text is augmented by a full bibliography, and appendices containing the Annals of the Three Choirs. Performed for the purpose of religious worship, this fusion of dance, song, and percussion survives today in the Bolton Community of McIntosh County, Georgia. Incorporating oral history, first-person accounts, musical transcriptions, photographs, and drawings, Shout Because You're Free documents a group of performers known as the McIntosh County Shouters. Derived from African practices, the ring shout combines call-and-response singing, the percussion of a stick or broom on a wood floor, and hand-clapping and foot-tapping. First described in depth by outside observers on the sea islands of South Carolina and Georgia during the Civil War, the ring shout was presumed to have died out in active practice until 1980, when the shouters in the Bolton community first came to the public's attention. Shout Because You're Free is the result of sixteen years of research and fieldwork by Art and Margo Rosenbaum, authors of Folk Visions and Voices. The book includes descriptions of present-day community shouts, a chapter on the history of the shout's African origins, the recollections of early outside observers, and later folklorists' comments. In addition, the tunes and texts of twenty-five shout songs performed by the McIntosh County Shouters are transcribed by ethnomusicologist Johann S.
