Jha, 2020-05-05 Hugely controversial upon its publication in India, this book has already been banned by the Hyderabad Civil Court and the author's life has been threatened.   dn jha ancient india book: Economy and Society in Early India Dwijendra Narayan Jha, 1993 Description: This work throws a flush of multi-coloured light on the Economic Organization in Ancient India from 200 BC to 200 AD. Due to the advent of alien tribes in India, this period opened new vistas of transitional era and ventilated new air of thoughtful broodings, establishing sound venues in the economic field of India making a peep into India's ties with neighbouring and distant countries in the spheres of trade and commerce, transport and communication. The present work is not merely a survey but a microscopic and complete reexamination of the prevailing concepts including land-ownership, land-tenureship, state and economy, fiscal policy and taxation. Thus it presents a panoramic revelation of commerce and economics in history with an humble approach of intensifying the cultural heritage of India. Unlike other nations, economic conditions in India have always closely been interwoven with her socio-cultural fabric throughout the pages of history. In modern times, to speak of 'pure economics' in India will be a misnomer to a large extent. In this light, the present work should not only be looked with an academician's eye, but also from the point of view of those whose interest of study lie in researches of history as it envisage to unveil the spheres of economics and planning in modern times.
dn jha ancient india book: Ancient India Upinder Singh, 2021 In Ancient India: Culture of Contradictions one of India's most distinguished historians takes readers on an exhilarating voyage of discovery into the distant past. Upinder Singh urges us to abandon simplistic stereotypes and instead think of ancient India in terms of the coexistence of five powerful contradictions--between social inequality and promises of universal salvation the valorization of desire and detachment goddess worship and misogyny violence and non-violence and religious debate and conflict. She does so using a vast array of sources including religious and philosophical texts epics poetry plays technical treatises satire biographies and inscriptions as well as the material and aesthetic evidence of archaeology and art from sites across the subcontinent. Singh's scholarly but highly accessible style clear explanation and balanced interpretations offer an understanding of the historian's craft and unravel the many threads of what we think of as ancient Indian culture. This is not a dead or forgotten past but one invoked in different contexts even today. Further in spite of enormous historical changes over the centuries the contradictions discussed here still remain. Beautifully written deeply true and profusely illustrated with masterpieces of ancient medieval and modern art the book brings to life the rich complexity of ancient India and its connections with the present in a vivid and compelling manner.

dn jha ancient india book: The Many Careers of D.D. Kosambi Dwijendra Narayan Jha, 2011 Damodar Dharmananda Kosambi (July 31, 1907 - June 29, 1966) was a man with a Renaissance type of versatility: he had a wide range of knowledge without sacrificing depth. He was a mathematician, statistician, and polymath who contributed to genetics by introducing Kosambi's map function. He did pioneering work in numismatics and in compiling critical editions of ancient Sanskrit texts. Above all, he was an outstanding Marxist historian.//The present volume brings together articles by scholars who assess Kosambi's contributions to Indian historiography, Indology, philology, the study of religions, historical materialism, and our understanding of caste in Indian history. While most essays deal with Kosambi the historian, the final essay presents a detailed scientific, historical and political assessment of his mathematical work. The essays are neither allergic to, nor adulatory about, Kosambi's work, but seek to present a balanced and critical appraisal, as well as updating our knowledge with the current thinking in the field. //The editor of this volume, Prof. D. N. Jha, is an acclaimed historian. The other contributors are: Irfan Habib, Suvira Jaiswal, Prabhat Patnaik, C.K. Raju, Krishna Mohan Shrimali, Eugenia Vanina, and Kesavan Veluthat.

dn jha ancient india book: Western Foundations of the Caste System Martin Fárek, Dunkin Jalki, Sufiya Pathan, Prakash Shah, 2017-07-07 This book argues that the dominant descriptions of the ‘caste system’ are rooted in the Western Christian experience of India. Thus, caste studies tell us more about the West than about India. It further demonstrates the imperative to move beyond this scholarship in order to generate descriptions of Indian social reality. The dominant descriptions of the ‘caste system’ that we have today are results of originally Christian themes and questions. The authors of this collection show how this hypothesis can be applied beyond South Asia to the diasporic cultures that have made a home in Western countries, and how the inheritance of caste studies as structured by European scholarship impacts on our understanding of contemporary India and the Indians of the diaspora. This collection will be of interest to scholars and students of caste studies, India studies, religion in South Asia, postcolonial studies, history, anthropology and sociology.
dn jha ancient india book: The Feudalism Debate Harbans Mukhia, 1999 This volume arose as part of global interest in the problematic of feudalism in the 1980s, opening up both its theoretical premises and the empirical basis to extensive, deep, and varied explorations. Most exploration were grounded in Marxist theory. In 1981, Harbans Mukhia's essay, 'Was There Feudalism in Indian History?' was published in The Journal of Peasant Studies, which triggered an international debate on the problem in the journal's special issue in 1985 and some subsequent issues. Among the central questions was the tension between the Marxist conception of capitalism as the first world system and several Marxist historians' construction of feudalism as a universal category. The spatial dimensions of the problem were extended to include China, Turkey, and Arabia, besides Europe and India, in the course of the debate. The questioning of some of the received wisdom understandably leads to both fierce defence on its behalf as well as further questions. This extensive reopening of all firmly held views turned the debate into a most satisfying experience, for it emphasized exploration rather than agreement. Most contributions to the debate are being published in this volume.
dn jha ancient india book: Rethinking Hindu Identity Dwijendra Narayan Jha, 2014-12-18 Recent years have seen the emergence of a virulent version of Hindu nationalism and fundamentalism in India under the banner of Hindutva. This xenophobic movement has obfuscated and mystified the notion of Hindu identity and reinforced its stereotypes. Its arguments range from the patently unscientific - humankind was created in India, as was the first civilisation - to historical whitewash: Hinduism has continued in one, unchanged form for 5000 years; Hinduism has always been a tolerant faith. 'Rethinking Hindu Identity' offers a corrective based on a deep and detailed reading of Indian history. Written in a riveting style, this study provides a fresh history of Hinduism - its practices, its beliefs, its differences and inconsistencies, and its own myths about itself. Along the way, the book systematically demolishes the arguments of Hindu fundamentalism and nationalism, revealing how the real history of Hinduism is much more complex.

In a number of cases, the Buddhist canonical texts reject practices which they accept elsewhere. When these practices-sometimes rejected, sometimes accepted-correspond to what is known about non-Buddhist practices, the conculsion in then proposed that they are non-Buddhist practices which have somehow found their way into the Buddhist texts. A similar procedure enables one to choose between conflicting beliefs.

dn jha ancient india book: Looking for the Aryans Ram Sharan Sharma, 1995 Who were the Aryans? Where did they come from? Did they always live in India? The Aryan problem has been attracting fresh attention in academic, social and political arenas. This book identifies the main traits of Aryan culture and follows the spread of their cultural markers. Using the latest archaeological evidence and the earliest known Indo-European inscriptions on the social and economic features of Aryan society, the distinguished historian, R. S. Sharma, throws fresh light on the current debate on whether or not the Aryans were the indigenous inhabitants of India. This book is essential reading for those interested in the history of India and its culture.
dn jha ancient india book: Aryans and British India Thomas R. Trautmann, 2023-07-28 Aryan, a word that today evokes images of racial hatred and atrocity, was first used by Europeans to suggest bonds of kinship, as Thomas Trautmann shows in his far-reaching history of British Orientalism and the ethnology of India. When the historical relationship uniting Sanskrit with the languages of Europe was discovered, it seemed clear that Indians and Britons belonged to the same family. Thus the Indo-European or Aryan idea, based on the principle of linguistic kinship, dominated British ethnological inquiry. In the nineteenth century, however, an emergent biological race science attacked the authority of the Orientalists. The spectacle of a dark-skinned people who were evidently civilized challenged Victorian ideas, and race science responded to the enigma of India by redefining the Aryan concept in narrowly white racial terms. By the end of the nineteenth century, race science and Orientalism reached a deep and lasting consensus in regard to India, which Trautmann calls the racial theory of Indian civilization, and which he undermines with his powerful analysis of colonial ethnology in India. His work of reassessing British Orientalism and the Aryan idea will be of great interest to historians, anthropologists, and cultural critics. Aryan, a word that today evokes images of racial hatred and atrocity, was first used by Europeans to suggest bonds of kinship, as Thomas Trautmann shows in his far-reaching history of British Orientalism and the ethnology of India.   dn jha ancient india book: Understanding Harappa Shereen Ratnagar, 2015-11-03 This slim volume is an attempt to rouse the interest of students and non-specialists in the early civilization of the Indus valley and adjoining regions of Pakistan and India. The challenges of archaeological interpretation are discussed, together with maps, site plans and illustrations of artefacts, but the evidence is presented in social terms rather than in a technical way. In an attempt to cast an overall perspective, the Indus civilization is presented in the context of contemporary cultural development in South Asia as well as Western and Central Asia. The third edition of this volume included references to new ideas on the Indus civilization and to excavations at a small but significant site. This revised and updated fourth edition contains additional material on Dholavira and the harnessing of flash-floods.
