dr andrew kaines: The Annals of Willenhall Frederick William Hackwood, 2022-07-20 In 'The Annals of Willenhall', Frederick William Hackwood chronicles the rich history of the quaint English town of Willenhall with meticulous attention to detail. From the significant Battle of Wednesfield to the Saxon Settlement and the inception of Wulfruna's Church, Hackwood weaves the tapestry of Willenhall's past through a combination of vivid narrative, rigorous research, and archival photography. The literary style of the book, which might be seen as part historical diary and part guide, lends the work a sense of intimacy and authority, anchoring it firmly within the broader canon of English local historical writings.nFrederick William Hackwood, a noted historian and meticulous chronicler of English regional history, poured his intellectual rigor and profound local knowledge into this volume. His intent was likely driven by a passionate commitment to preserving the memory of Willenhall's idiosyncratic history, ensuring that both its tangible and intangible heritage are not lost to the ages. The book reflects Hackwood's understanding of the essential continuity between past and present, offering a window into the evolution of the town and its community.n'The Annals of Willenhall' comes highly recommended to aficionados of English history, particularly those interested in the rich tapestry of local lore and the evolution of small communities. Readers seeking to grasp the historical significance of regional landmarks and the lasting impacts of local figures will find Hackwood's work invaluable. It is suited both to the scholar's library and to the collection of anyone who cherishes the importance of remembrance and the storytelling inherent in the landscape around us. |

dr andrew kaines: Agrobacterium: From Biology to Biotechnology Tzvi Tzfira, Vitaly Citovsky, 2007-12-25 Agrobacterium is a plant pathogen which causes the “crown-gall” disease, a neoplastic growth that results from the transfer of a well-defined DNA segment (“transferred DNA”, or “T-DNA”) from the bacterial Ti (tumor-inducing) plasmid to the host cell, its integration into the host genome, and the expression of oncogenes contained on the T-DNA. The molecular machinery, needed for T-DNA generation and transport into the host cell and encoded by a series of chromosomal (chv) and Ti-plasmid virulence (vir) genes, has been the subject of numerous studies over the past several decades. Today, Agrobacterium is the tool of choice for plant genetic engineering with an ever expanding host range that includes many commercially important crops, flowers, and tree species. Furthermore, its recent application for the genetic transformation of non-plant species, from yeast to cultivated mushrooms and even to human cells, promises this bacterium a unique place in the future of biotechnological applications. The book is a comprehensive volume describing Agrobacterium's biology, interactions with host species, and uses for genetic engineering. |

dr andrew kaines: Evidence-Based Health Economics Miranda Mugford, Luke Vale, Cam Donaldson, 2002-05-22 In his seminal work From Effectiveness to Efficiency: Random Reflections on Health Care, Archie Cochrane said, in 1971, 'More and more, requests for additional facilities will have to be based on detailed arguments with hard evidence as to the gain to be expected from the patient's angle and the cost. Few could possibly object to this.' These words are as true today as when they were written. Evidence-based clinical practice isolated from economic issues is not a realistic goal. Furthermore, narrow evidence-based medicine methodologies may lead to an inefficient health policy and greater inequalities in health. Evidence-based Health Economics recognises these issues and has brought together some of the world's leading thinkers and practitioners of economic evaluation in health care, all of whom have been involved with the evidence-based movement, as participants, critics or both. These experts demosntrate not only the need for the use of evidence-based principles in economic evaluation but also that such principles should themselves be based on health economics. Case studies are outlined which show how to bring economic evaluation and systematic review together and how to use such evaluations in the clinical setting. The book also shows how economics can be used to broaden the evidence base for a more efficient and equitable health policy, and sets a future research agenda for this challenging area of work. |

dr andrew kaines: Race in a Godless World Nathan G. Alexander, 2019-09-16 Is modern racism a product of secularisation and the decline of Christian universalism? The debate has raged for decades, but up to now, the actual racial views of historical atheists and freethinkers have never been subjected to a systematic analysis. Race in a Godless World sets out to correct the oversight. It centres on Britain and the United States in the second half of the nineteenth century, a time when popular atheist movements were emerging and scepticism about the truth of Christianity was becoming widespread. Covering racial and evolutionary science, imperialism, slavery and racial prejudice in theory and practice, it provides a much-needed account of the complex and sometimes contradictory ideas espoused by the transatlantic community of atheists and freethinkers. It also reflects on the social dimension of irreligiousness, exploring how working-class atheists’ experiences of exclusion could make them sympathetic to other marginalised groups. |
