dtn ppt: GABA and Sleep Jaime M. Monti, Seithikurippu Ratnas Pandi-Perumal, Hanns Möhler, 2010-09-28 GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is the main neurotransmitter regulating sleep. The majority of drugs presently in use for the treatment of sleep disorders act by enhancing GABAergic neuronal inhibition. The GABA system is, therefore, of prime clinical relevance for the therapy of insomnia. The focus of this volume is on the neuropsychopharmacology and the clinical impact of the GABA system in regulating sleep and wakefulness. It presents molecular, neuropharmacological, systems-biological and clinical approaches to the understanding of the mechanism of action of GABA and GABAergic drugs. It also explores the role of GABA in the basic drives that affect sleep, and the influences that adapt sleep and wakefulness to external events. |

dtn ppt: Principles of Neural Design Peter Sterling, Simon Laughlin, 2017-06-09 Two distinguished neuroscientists distil general principles from more than a century of scientific study, “reverse engineering” the brain to understand its design. Neuroscience research has exploded, with more than fifty thousand neuroscientists applying increasingly advanced methods. A mountain of new facts and mechanisms has emerged. And yet a principled framework to organize this knowledge has been missing. In this book, Peter Sterling and Simon Laughlin, two leading neuroscientists, strive to fill this gap, outlining a set of organizing principles to explain the whys of neural design that allow the brain to compute so efficiently. Setting out to “reverse engineer” the brain—disassembling it to understand it—Sterling and Laughlin first consider why an animal should need a brain, tracing computational abilities from bacterium to protozoan to worm. They examine bigger brains and the advantages of “anticipatory regulation”; identify constraints on neural design and the need to “nanofy”; and demonstrate the routes to efficiency in an integrated molecular system, phototransduction. They show that the principles of neural design at finer scales and lower levels apply at larger scales and higher levels; describe neural wiring efficiency; and discuss learning as a principle of biological design that includes “save only what is needed.” Sterling and Laughlin avoid speculation about how the brain might work and endeavor to make sense of what is already known. Their distinctive contribution is to gather a coherent set of basic rules and exemplify them across spatial and functional scales. |

Applications include a variety of medical and other imaging techniques, which are used for early detection of cancer and pulmonary edema, location of oil and mineral deposits in the Earth's interior, creation of astrophysical images from telescope data, finding cracks and interfaces within materials, shape optimization, model identification in growth processes, and modeling in the life sciences among others. The expository survey essays in this book describe recent developments in inverse problems and imaging, including hybrid or couple-physics methods arising in medical imaging, Calderon's problem and electrical impedance tomography, inverse problems arising in global seismology and oil exploration, inverse spectral problems, and the study of asymptotically hyperbolic spaces. It is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in inverse problems and their applications. |
dtn ppt: The Application of Formal Methods Simon Foster, Augusto Sampaio, 2024-08-31 This Festschrift, dedicated to Jim Woodcock, contains papers written by many of his closest collaborators. After a PhD on software verification at the University of Liverpool, Jim has combined a successful career in academia with outstanding industry research, in particular he has been a pioneer in applying mathematical modelling approaches in critical industries. At GEC's Hirst Research Centre he worked on a novel distributed telephone exchange and a service specification of a PABX exchange. In Oxford he collaborated with IBM Hursley Laboratories on modelling of the CICS transaction processing system, one of the most significant software systems ever. As part of the UK government's cybersecurity strategy, he used Z techniques to develop secure office automation systems and a secure version of UNIX. He worked with the Smith Institute and BR Research to verify the safety of railway signalling systems, approaches developed further in safety-critical control systems for the UK Nuclear Installation Inspectorate and British Energy. He provided a technically complete theory of correctness for Z, verifying its soundness from first principles, and completed the verification of Mondex, a smartcard-based electronic cash system, the first application of a general theory of program correctness to an industrial product. He coordinated the experimental work of the Verified Software Initiative, an international grand challenge. More recently he extended the collection of standard Unifying Theories of Programming (UTP) with work on object orientation and hybrid systems. Currently he is working on a UTP theory of probabilistic programs with application to robotics. Jim has been a lecturer, research fellow, reader and professor at the University of Surrey, the University of Oxford, the University of Kent, and since 2004 the University of York, and he is a visiting professor at the Federal University of Pernambuco and Trinity College Dublin. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the British Computer Society, and the Formal Methods Europe association, and he was part of the team that won the Queen’s Award for Technological Achievement in 1992. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the ACM journal Formal Aspects of Computing, he has chaired major related academic conferences, and he has contributed to CCITT and Z ISO international standards. Throughout all these activities, Jim has been a guide and inspiration to colleagues and students, and collaborated successfully with researchers in the UK, Brazil, China, France, USA, Ireland, and Singapore. Many of these researchers show in their contributions to this volume the ongoing impact of his work. |

dtn ppt: Voronoi Diagrams And Delaunay Triangulations Franz Aurenhammer, Rolf Klein, Der-tsai Lee, 2013-06-26 Voronoi diagrams partition space according to the influence certain sites exert on their environment. Since the 17th century, such structures play an important role in many areas like Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Ecology, Economics, Mathematics and Computer Science. They help to describe zones of political influence, to determine the hospital nearest to an accident site, to compute collision-free paths for mobile robots, to reconstruct curves and surfaces from sample points, to refine triangular meshes, and to design location strategies for competing markets. This unique book offers a state-of-the-art view of Voronoi diagrams and their structure, and it provides efficient algorithms towards their computation.Readers with an entry-level background in algorithms can enjoy a guided tour of gently increasing difficulty through a fascinating area. Lecturers might find this volume a welcome source for their courses on computational geometry. Experts are offered a broader view, including many alternative solutions, and up-to-date references to the existing literature; they might benefit in their own research or application development. |

dtn ppt: Principles of Petroleum Reservoir Engineering Gian L. Chierici, 2013-03-09 Six years ago, at the end of my professional career in the oil industry, I left my management position within Agip S.p.A., a major multinational oil company whose headquarters are in Italy, to take up the chair in reservoir engineering at the University of Bologna, Italy. There, I decided to prepare what was initially intended to be a set of lecture notes for the students attending the course. However, while preparing these notes, I became so absorbed in the subject matter that I soon found myself creating a substantial volume of text which could not only serve as a university course material, but also as a reference for wider professional applications. Thanks to the interest shown by the then president of Agip, Ing. Giuseppe Muscarella, this did indeed culminate in the publication of the first Italian edition of this book in 1989. The translation into English and publication of these volumes owes much to the encouragement of the current president of Agip, Ing. Guglielmo Moscato. My grateful thanks are due to both gentlemen. And now - the English version, translated from the second Italian edition, and containing a number of revisions and much additional material. As well as providing a solid theoretical basis for the various topics, this work draws extensively on my 36 years of worldwide experience in the development and exploitation of oil and gas fields. |
