double eagle parks: A Growing Nation Robert A. Miles, 2013-08-08 This book, that has been 22 years in the making, is the first printing of the R.A. Miles Collection of the Southwest History from 1831 to 1889. It’s in chronological order by events and dates, and is a true and revealing account of the American history of the Southwest. It is an impartial, sometimes disconcerting, portrayal of the expanding United States westward. History is not always pleasant, but that is how it transpired sometimes in those years, and this book recounts both favorable and adverse events that need to be told. This country was expanding! It was growing; there were many heroes, many battles and many tragedies in the expansion of this country. It was like a glass of water sitting in the frigid cold. It froze and began to expand, the expansion could not be stopped, soon the glass burst. The final results were predictable and inevitable. The expansion couldn’t go east because of an ocean, it could only go west to the other ocean, and that it did. This collection is about the events that transpired during the mid to late 1800’s as a direct result of that westward growth. I have traveled these mountains for 7 of the 22 years in researching this book, from El Paso, Texas through Silver City, Lordsburg, Las Cruces and Stein, New Mexico and into Apache Pass in Arizona. I've explored Carlisle Canyon and drank the water at Goat Camp spring in Goat; journeyed through Camp Canyon, Hells Canyon, Steeple Rock Canyon, Red Rock, Crookson Peak and more. I have followed the trails of the old Butterfield Stage Line and found an old stage way station. I have found and taken pictures of over 150 old gold and silver mines and listed their histories, and listened to stories from an old miner as old as I am. What is most important, is I enjoyed every minute of it... Robert A. Miles

double eagle parks: Basher History: National Parks Joe Yogerst, 2022-03-15 • Which national park was America’s first, and what hot-water features will you find there? • In which national park would you find rock formations called the Witch’s Finger and the Devil’s Armchair? • And what exactly is a saguaro, almost 2 million of which can be found in its namesake national park? From the high peaks of the Rockies to the lows of Death Valley, from the Statue of Liberty in the East to the redwood forest of the West, and from the panoramic views of the Grand Canyon to getting up close and personal to wildlife in Yellowstone, Basher invites you to take a journey through some of the United States’ most spectacular national parks, recreation areas, and preserves—and take in a few national monuments while you’re at it! Paddle a canoe through the Everglades, zip down gypsum dunes at White Sands, and count the brown bears at Katmai. There’s no end to the natural wonders you’ll see. Perfect for home or school, Basher's highly original books make difficult concepts tangible, understandable, and even lovable. Chatty first-person text and stylish, contemporary character illustrations give a voice, personality, and story to each topic—a brilliant way to communicate science, history, and geography.

double eagle parks: Payne at Pinehurst Bill Chastain, 2005-06-01 Payne at Pinehurst presents a fascinating re-telling of the 1999 U.S. Open--considered by many golf experts as the greatest U.S. Open ever played--where Payne Stewart dramatically sunk a fifteen-foot putt on the 18th hole to defeat Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, and a host of other golf greats just four months before his untimely death in a bizarre plane crash. It has been called the greatest U.S. Open in the Open's over one hundred-year history. Veteran sports journalist, Bill Chastain, crafts the dramatic story of Payne Stewart's 1999 U.S. Open victory by combining extensive research with interviews of those who made it unique. Stewart's conquest of Pinehurst No. 2, while fending off Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, David Duval, and Vijay Singh in an epic battle where every swing held significance, is the stuff of which golf legends are made. From compelling action by the best golfers in the world to the tournament's dramatic conclusion, Payne at Pinehurst shows readers why the 1999 U.S. Open is regarded as the best U.S. Open ever played. A fresh and concise look at Payne Stewart's victory at the 1999 U.S. Open.--Golf Digest
