devita oncology online: Oxford Textbook of Cancer Biology Francesco Pezzella, Mahvash Tavassoli, David J. Kerr, 2019-05-05 The study of the biology of tumours has grown to become markedly interdisciplinary, involving chemists, statisticians, epidemiologists, mathematicians, bioinformaticians, and computer scientists alongside biologists, geneticists, and clinicians. The Oxford Textbook of Cancer Biology brings together the most up-to-date developments from different branches of research into one coherent volume, providing a comprehensive and current account of this rapidly evolving field. Structured in eight sections, the book starts with a review of the development and biology of multi-cellular organisms, how they maintain a healthy homeostasis in an individual, and a description of the molecular basis of cancer development. The book then illustrates, as once cells become neoplastic, their signalling network is altered and pathological behaviour follows. It explores the changes that cancer cells can induce in nearby normal tissue, the new relationship established between them and the stroma, and the interaction between the immune system and tumour growth. The authors illustrate the contribution provided by high throughput techniques to map cancer at different levels, from genomic sequencing to cellular metabolic functions, and how information technology, with its vast amounts of data, is integrated with traditional cell biology to provide a global view of the disease. The effect of the different types of treatments on the biology of the neoplastic cells are explored to understand on the one side, why some treatments succeed, and on the other, how they can affect the biology of resistant and recurrent disease. The book concludes by summarizing what we know to date about cancer, and in what direction our understanding of cancer is moving. Edited by leading authorities in the field with an international team of contributors, this book is an essential resource for scholars and professionals working in the wide variety of sub-disciplines that make up today's cancer research and treatment community. It is written not only for consultation, but also for easy cover-to-cover reading.
devita oncology online: The Emperor of All Maladies Siddhartha Mukherjee, 2011-08-09 Selected as One of the Best Books of the 21st Century by The New York Times Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, adapted as a documentary from Ken Burns on PBS, this New York Times bestseller is “an extraordinary achievement” (The New Yorker)—a magnificent, profoundly humane “biography” of cancer. Physician, researcher, and award-winning science writer, Siddhartha Mukherjee examines cancer with a cellular biologist’s precision, a historian’s perspective, and a biographer’s passion. The result is an astonishingly lucid and eloquent chronicle of a disease humans have lived with—and perished from—for more than five thousand years. The story of cancer is a story of human ingenuity, resilience, and perseverance, but also of hubris, paternalism, and misperception. Mukherjee recounts centuries of discoveries, setbacks, victories, and deaths, told through the eyes of his predecessors and peers, training their wits against an infinitely resourceful adversary that, just three decades ago, was thought to be easily vanquished in an all-out “war against cancer.” The book reads like a literary thriller with cancer as the protagonist. Riveting, urgent, and surprising, The Emperor of All Maladies provides a fascinating glimpse into the future of cancer treatments. It is an illuminating book that provides hope and clarity to those seeking to demystify cancer.

devita oncology online: Food Factors for Cancer Prevention Hajime Ohigashi, Toshihiko Osawa, Junji Terao, Shaw Watanabe, Toshikazu Yoshikawa, 2013-11-27 Chemoprevention is currently regarded as one of the most promising avenues for the control of cancer, with human epidemiological and animal studies indicating that the risk of cancer may be modified by changes in diet. Over 100 papers are collected in this volume, the proceedings of the International Conference on Food Factors: Chemistry and Cancer Prevention, held in Hamamatsu, Japan, in December 1995. Special emphasis is placed on chemical, biological, and molecular properties of phytochemicals in teas, fruit, vegetables, herbs, and spices, and on their potential for cancer prevention. Also discussed are the cancer-preventive effects of vitamins, lipids, carotenoids, flavonoids, and other components of diet. The findings presented here will be invaluable to all who are interested in diet and cancer prevention, and especially to biochemists, pharmacologists, food scientists, and nutritionists.
devita oncology online: Anticancer Drug Development Guide Beverly A. Teicher, Paul A. Andrews, 2004-02-01 This unique volume traces the critically important pathway by which a molecule becomes an anticancer agent. The recognition following World War I that the administration of toxic chemicals such as nitrogen mustards in a controlled manner could shrink malignant tumor masses for relatively substantial periods of time gave great impetus to the search for molecules that would be lethal to specific cancer cells. Weare still actively engaged in that search today. The question is how to discover these anticancer molecules. Anticancer Drug Development Guide: Preclinical Screening, Clinical Trials, and Approval, Second Edition describes the evolution to the present of preclinical screening methods. The National Cancer Institute's high-throughput, in vitro disease-specific screen with 60 or more human tumor cell lines is used to search for molecules with novel mechanisms of action or activity against specific phenotypes. The Human Tumor Colony-Forming Assay (HTCA) uses fresh tumor biopsies as sources of cells that more nearly resemble the human disease. There is no doubt that the greatest successes of traditional chemotherapy have been in the leukemias and lymphomas. Since the earliest widely used in vivo drug screening models were the murine L 1210 and P388 leukemias, the community came to assume that these murine tumor models were appropriate to the discovery of antileukemia agents, but that other tumor models would be needed to discover drugs active against solid tumors.

devita oncology online: Peritoneal Carcinomatosis: Principles of Management Paul H. Sugarbaker, 2012-12-06 Paul Sugarbaker and his colleagues have persevered in the study and treat ment of peritoneal carcinomatosis. The peritoneal cavity has many unique and incompletely appreciated properties. These properties, coupled with the biologic behavior of many cancers, results in the seeding and growth of these cancers on the peritoneum. Many of these cancers remain localized to the peritoneum only, never metastasizing to other sites. One possible reason for this may be the obstruction of the afferent lymphatics on the undersurface of the diaphragm. The mucopolysaccharides produced by many of these neoplasma are probably viscous enough to obstruct these lymphatics, leading to the syndrome of pseudomyxoma peritonei. Many of the neoplasms taking residence on the peritoneum have extremely long cell-cycle times and are resistant to radiotherapy and many chemotherapeutic agents. How ever, much can be done for these patients - resection of primary cancers, omentectomies to reduce ascites formation, management of recurrent ascites, management of intestinal obstruction, nutritional care, and, hopefully, intraperitoneal chemotherapy. We have reviewed many of these problems in the past [1-7]. Dr. Sugarbaker and his colleagues have organized the current state of knowledge and technology for continuing use. The book provides a basis for thoughtful, prospective research planning. John S. Spratt, M. D. , F. A. C. S.   devita oncology online: A World Without Cancer Margaret I. Cuomo, 2013-10-01 A provocative and surprising investigation into the ways that profit, personalities, and politics obstruct real progress in the war on cancer—and one doctor's passionate call to action for change This year, nearly 1.6 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed and more than 1,500 people will die per day. We've been asked to accept the disappointing strategy to manage cancer as a chronic disease. We've allowed pharmaceutical companies to position cancer drugs that extend life by just weeks and may cost $100,000 for a single course of treatment as breakthroughs. Why have we been able to cure and prevent other killer diseases but not most cancers? Where is the bold government leadership that will transform our system from treatment to prevention? Have we forgotten the mission of the National Cancer Act of 1971, to conquer cancer? Through an analysis of over 40 years of medical evidence and interviews with cancer doctors, researchers, drug company executives, and health policy advisors, Dr. Cuomo reveals frank and intriguing answers to these questions. She shows us how all cancer stakeholders—the pharmaceutical industry, government, physicians, and concerned Americans—can change the way we view and fight cancer in this country.

devita oncology online: The Journey Through Cancer Dr. Jeremy Geffen, 2007-12-18 The Journey Through Cancer is an essential guide for all cancer patients, their families, and their loved ones. As a board-certified oncologist, with more than ten years of experience serving as physician, guide, mentor, coach, and friend to thousands of cancer patients and their families, Dr. Jeremy Geffen has learned how cancer often challenges the mind, heart, and spirit of patients and their families as deeply --- if not more deeply --- than it challenges the physical body. Yet this simple truth is often overlooked by Western medicine as it aggressively pursues the best ways to diagnose and treat cancer. Too often physicians focus almost exclusively on the physical dimensions of the disease, rather than caring for the whole person who has the disease. Dr. Geffen presents a groundbreaking seven-level program, used at his cancer center in Florida, that addresses every dimension of the person with cancer--physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual: Education and Information, giving patients answers to questions about their disease and their treatment options. Psychosocial Support, focusing on the need for and benefits of a strong support network. The Body as Garden, exploring the vast array of alternative and complementary therapies. Emotional Healing, helping patients and families deal with the often overwhelming emotional challenges of cancer. The Nature of Mind, exploring how patients' thoughts and beliefs profoundly influence their journey. Life Assessment, showing patients how to discover their life's deepest meaning and purpose. The Nature of Spirit, connecting patients to the profoundly healing spiritual aspect of life we all share. In The Journey Through Cancer, Dr. Geffen presents a revolutionary model of healing based on the best treatments available from every culture and paradigm of medicine, one that respects and explores every possible avenue and resource for healing and transformation, blending East and West, body and mind, heart and technology, science and spirit.
devita oncology online: Perioperative Chemotherapy U. Metzger, F. Largiader, H.-J. Senn, 2012-12-06 One reason for failure to cure solid tumors by surgery appears to be the impossibility of controlling metastases that are present but latent at the time of operation. This failure is a common clinical experience with aggressive neoplasms. but it is not always appreciated in tumors with longer survival times. e. g .• breast and colon cancer. In addition. recent evidence indicates that after resection of a primary tumor micrometas tases from it might be enhanced by suppression of immune and reticu loendothelial functions of the host. Other factors, such as increase of coagulability and stress in the perioperative period, can also promote tumor growth. The development of new metastases might be facilitated by cells forced into the circulation during operative manipulations. Such events could be important for the outcome of treatment and it is suggested that preventive measures should be directed to this systemic component of solid tumors. Radical surgery can reduce the number of tumor cells to a subclinical 3 6 stage (10 to 10 cells) in which chemotherapy might be more effective than in advanced stages. Chemotherapy, on the other hand, might aggravate the surgical morbidity by influencing the wound healing pro cess, by decreasing the immune response, and/or by toxicity to the bone marrow and to the gastrointestinal tract, for example.

I have written this book purely from the perspective of a hemat-oncologist and by relying on the highest quality material. The standard textbooks, NCCN guidelines and high impact journals were referenced for every question.
