dundee ymca: The Churches of Broughty Ferry G Wightman, 101-01-01 Broughty Ferry on the outskirts of Dundee grew from a small fishing village to one of the wealthiest places in the world during the 19th century. As a consequence, a lot of churches were built, 11 being within an area of about 800m by 500 m. In its 12 chapters the history of each of church is described, along with the BFCG*, and the YMCA. There is also a chapter on early Christian worship in the area. Besides explaining why each church is here, the chapters also describe the people who made up the church and the buildings. Several of these are listed buildings, and a number of the stained-glass windows are thought to be of national importance. Some of our churches' style of worship have also stirred national debate, such as The Broughty Ferry Harmonium Case, or The Barnhill Case But the church is really the people rather than the building, and scattered throughout the book are anecdotes of ministers and church members. As well as individuals, congregations have played their part in the social life of the Ferry, particularly in the days before television. They also played their part helping others in times of disaster (for example, the capsize of the lifeboat Mona) or national emergencies, and in more peaceful times they have been a social conscience. Appendices list the buildings and their architects, the stained-glass windows, and the ministers of all the churches. *The Broughty Ferry Churches Group (BFCG) is an informal grouping of 9 churches representing 5 different denominations (Church of Scotland, Episcopalian, Catholic, Baptist, Methodist). The Congregational Church was also a member until it closed in 2005. The group has been working together for over 50 years |

dundee ymca: Manhood Factories Paula Lupkin, 2010 Between the Civil War and the Great Depression, the Young Men's Christian Association built more than a thousand community centers across the United States and in major cities around the world. Dubbed manhood factories by Teddy Roosevelt, these iconic buildings served as athletic centers and residential facilities for a rapidly growing urban male population. In Manhood Factories, Paula Lupkin goes behind the reserved Beaux-Arts facades of typical YMCA buildings constructed in this period to understand the urban anxieties, moral agendas, and conceptions of masculinity that guided their design, construction, and use. She shows that YMCA patrons like J. P. Morgan, Cyrus McCormick Jr., and John Wanamaker hoped to create Christian clubhouses that would counteract the corrupting influences of the city. At first designed by leading American architects, including James Renwick Jr. and William Le Baron Jenney, and then standardized by the YMCA's own building bureau, YMCAs combined elements of men's clubs, department stores, hotels, and Sunday schools. Every aspect of the building process was informed by this mission, Lupkin argues, from raising funds, selecting the site and the architect, determining the exterior style, arranging and furnishing interior spaces, and representing the buildings in postcards and other printed materials. Beginning with the early history of the YMCA and the construction of New York City's landmark Twenty-third Street YMCA of 1869, Lupkin follows the efforts of YMCA leaders to shape a modern yet moral public culture and even define class, race, ethnicity, and gender through its buildings. Illustrated with many rarely seen photographs, maps, and drawings, Manhood Factories offers a fascinating new perspective on a venerable institution and its place in America's cultural and architectural history. |

dundee ymca: Pioneer Flying Achievements of Preston Watson Blair, 2016-03-21 At the turn of the nineteenth century, what was to become the aviation industry was the preserve of a few enthusiastic amateurs whose ambition to be the first fly like the birds bordered on obsession. The Wright brothers in America, Otto Lillienthal, Percy Pilcher and others had brought matters to the cusp of success. Preston Watson was born in Dundee in 1881 and from an early age showed an innovative interest in developing a flying machine which could take off and land under its own power. While records are incomplete, many believe that Watson beat the Wright brothers into the air by a margin of months in 1903. His unique rocking-wing aircraft was launched, with the engine at full power, by a simple catapult device. His subsequent two machines aimed to improve this performance. He is credited with inventing the joystick - the idea is still in use in every aircraft today. Determining who was first to fly is not the objective of this book. Rather, it records the hitherto unsung efforts of this son of Dundee whose short life - he died at the age of thirty-four - had a significant influence on the history of aviation. |

Drawing on the methods of history, international relations, political science, and sociology, the contributing authors examine various theories of sporting globalization. The chapters take a balanced look at the concepts of the nation state and the connected world, which are the substantive core around which modern human society is ordered. They construct stories of entanglements and convergences, from within and without the nation state, in which the national and the non-national are not mutually exclusive. The key features of this collection are how cultural elements are introduced to sport, how changes are perceived, how sporting practices and institutions can be defined at geopolitical and other levels, how we might conceptualize the perimeter of judging the national–transnational or the local–translocal paradigms, and how we could complicate the understanding of sport/knowledge transfer by ascribing different degrees of importance to origin, process, purpose, outcome, personnel and network. This book is a multidisciplinary exploration into the development of modern sporting culture from global and transnational history perspectives.
