darin deterra: Kurienuniversität und stadtrömische Universität von ca. 1300 bis 1471 Brigide Schwarz, 2012-12-10 Amongst the oldest universities that of the Roman curia is the Great Unkown; little is known of the university of Rome (and of Avignon till 1378). To compensate the loss of sources materials mainly from the Vatican were intensively analysed and a prosopography of the dons and students (694 biograms in annex) drawn up. Some results: all three were legal universities of the southern type. The curial university was itinerant, it was continued at the general councils. Only when the curia resided there untroubled, the local schools of Rome (and Avignon) became great, international universities and different forms of association with the curial university were tried on. Rome was sought after by students from all over Europe for study of legal theory whereas praxis was learned at the papal court. Another attraction of Rome were the possibilities of attaining higher academic grades without much ceremony (first in theology, later also in law).
darin deterra: Das Geistbuch Dagmar Gottschall, 2011-11-25 The Geistbuch is an anonymous vernacular theological treatise from the first half of the 14th century that circulated in Middle High German and Middle Dutch. Based on the biblical injunction of Jesus to Peter, Sequere me (“Follow me”, John 21:19), the text describes the Christian path of perfection. The present volume offers for the first time a critical edition of the Geistbuch in its original Middle High German. It also includes a commentary on the sources, a reconstruction of the text’s history and tradition, an analysis of its structure and method of argumentation and a word index. The edited text gives us insights into vernacular theological debates concurrent with the trial of Meister Eckhart, and into the dynamic of their circulation along the Rhine valley from southwest Germany to Dutch Brabant.

This textbook will not only fascinate students wanting to learn about the topic, but also those experienced analytical chemists who are still inspired by their profession. The contents provide for easy reading by using natural products that everyone knows, such as caffeine, backed by an attractive layout with many pictures to visualize the topics. In addition, an in-depth analytical part makes the book a valuable teaching tool, or for self-learning using the questions and answers at the end of each chapter.

darin deterra: The Image of the Black in Western Art David Bindman, Henry Louis Gates (Jr.), Karen C. C. Dalton, 2010 A pioneering work in the field of art history, The Image of the Black in Western Art is a comprehensive series of ten books which offers a lavishly illustrated history of the representations of people of African descent from antiquity to the present. Each book includes a series of essays by some of the most distinguished names in art history. Ranging from images of Pharaohs created by unknown hands almost 3,500 years ago to the works of the great masters of European and American art such as Bosch, Dürer, Mantegna, Rembrandt, Rubens, Watteau, Hogarth, Copley, and Goya to stunning new media creations by contemporary black artists, these books are generously illustrated with beautiful, moving, and often little-known images of black people. Black figures-queens and slaves, saints and soldiers, priests and prisoners, dancers and athletes, children and gods-are central to the visual imagination of Western civilization. Written in accessible language, the extensive and insightful commentaries on the illustrations by distinguished art historians make this series invaluable for the general reader and the specialist alike.--Résumé de l'éditeur.
darin deterra: The Six-Cornered Snowflake Johannes Kepler, 2010-01-01 In 1611, Kepler wrote an essay wondering why snowflakes always had perfect, sixfold symmetry. It's a simple enough question, but one that no one had ever asked before and one that couldn't actually be answered for another three centuries. Still, in trying to work out an answer, Kepler raised some fascinating questions about physics, math, and biology, and now you can watch in wonder as a great scientific genius unleashes the full force of his intellect on a seemingly trivial question, complete with new illustrations and essays to put it all in perspective.—io9, from their list 10 Amazing Science Books That Reveal The Wonders Of The Universe When snow began to fall while he was walking across the Charles Bridge in Prague late in 1610, the eminent astronomer Johannes Kepler asked himself the following question: Why do snowflakes, when they first fall, and before they are entangled into larger clumps, always come down with six corners and with six radii tufted like feathers? In his effort to answer this charming and never-before-asked question about snowflakes, Kepler delves into the nature of beehives, peapods, pomegranates, five-petaled flowers, the spiral shape of the snail's shell, and the formative power of nature itself. While he did not answer his original question—it remained a mystery for another three hundred years—he did find an occasion for deep and playful thought. A most suitable book for any and all during the winter and holiday seasons is a reissue of a holiday present by the great mathematician and astronomer Johannes Kepler…Even the endnotes in this wonderful little book are interesting and educationally fun to read.—Jay Pasachoff, The Key Reporter —New English translation by Jacques Bromberg —Latin text on facing pages —An essay, The Delights of a Roving Mind by Owen Gingerich —An essay, On The Six-Cornered Snowflake by Guillermo Bleichmar —Snowflake illustrations by Capi Corrales Rodriganez —John Frederick Nims' poem The Six-Cornered Snowflake —Notes by Jacques Bromberg and Guillermo Bleichmar

darin deterra: Alchemy and Chemistry in the 16th and 17th Centuries P. Rattansi, Antonio Clericuzio, 2013-03-07 The present volume owes its ongm to a Colloquium on Alchemy and Chemistry in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, held at the Warburg Institute on 26th and 27th July 1989. The Colloquium focused on a number of selected themes during a closely defined chronological interval: on the relation of alchemy and chemistry to medicine, philosophy, religion, and to the corpuscular philosophy, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The relations between Medicina and alchemy in the Lullian treatises were examined in the opening paper by Michela Pereira, based on researches on unpublished manuscript sources in the period between the 14th and 17th centuries. It is several decades since the researches of R.F. Multhauf gave a prominent role to Johannes de Rupescissa in linking medicine and alchemy through the concept of a quinta essentia. Michela Pereira explores the significance of the Lullian tradition in this development and draws attention to the fact that the early Paracelsians had themselves recognized a family resemblance between the works of Paracelsus and Roger Bacon's scientia experimentalis and, indeed, a continuity with the Lullian tradition.

darin deterra: The Reception of Copernicus’ Heliocentric Theory J. Dobrzycki, 2013-06-29 In 1965 the International Union of the History and Philosophy of Science founded the Nicolas Copernicus Committee whose main task was to explore the means by th which different nations could co-operate in celebrating the 5 centenary of the great scholar's birth. The committee initiated the publication of a collection of studies dealing with the effect that Copernicus' theory has had on scientific developments in centres of learning all over the world. An Editorial Board, consisting of J. Dobrzycki (Warsaw), J. R. Ravetz (Leeds), H. Sandblad (Goteborg) and B. Sticker (Hamburg), was nominated. We found that our initiative aroused a lively interest among Copernicus scholars; the present volume, with 11 articles by authors from nine American, Asian and European countries, contains the result of their research. It appears in the series 'Studia Coper nicana' by agreement with the Polish Academy of Science, and we hope to publish a number of other contributions in a subsequent volume. We are happy to say that our efforts have been fruitful and that this volume presents not only several in-depth studies, but also a more general survey of the rules governing the evolution of science, rules set within the framework of Copernicus' theory as it developed among various nations and in various scientific institutions over the centuries. It has been shown once again that, 500 years after his birth, the work of Copernicus remains a source of scientific interest and continues to stimulate fresh study and research.
