| convergenze parallele: Communist Parties in the Middle East Laura Feliu, Ferran Izquierdo Brichs, 2019-05-17 Communist Parties in the Middle East: 100 Years of History One hundred years since the Russian Revolution, Communist parties have undergone great changes, in an evolution that has affected the entire Left and the social movements. Given that the impact of Communist parties and their evolution in the Middle East is a topic that has not been widely researched, Communist parties in the Middle East. 100 years of history aims to cover a century in the lives of these parties, from the moment the Communist ideology first reached the region in the early 20th century (brought by activists from minority groups) and the creation of the first parties and trades unions after the 1917 revolution, right up to the upheaval caused by the dissolution of the USSR and, more recently, the Arab Spring. The book has been designed to offer a unique, updated and comprehensive study of Communist parties in the Middle East, based on both a theoretical framework of analysis and substantial empirical research and archive documentation. Several issues are examined in this work. When the Russian Revolution took place, the Middle Eastern region as a whole was under colonial control. This meant taking decisions related to the relationship between the class struggle and the national struggle. The composition of the communist parties in the Middle East is also analysed as is their role as the vanguard –understood in the broad sense of the word– in relation to the objectives of liberation, emancipation, revolution and system change or reform, and their connection to mass or popular movements. Furthermore, the volume looks back at the dependency or autonomy of communist parties during the Cold War and the tensions that this generated in them, as well as the search for individual constructions of communism that took into account cultural characteristics and the local context of the struggle. In this respect, one of the recurring themes in the work is the relationship between communist activism and the sectors that mobilized in the name of nationalism or political Islam. Finally, the chapters trace the history of the parties, including –for the first time in the literature– the post-Cold War period and continuing to the current situation, in which communist parties occupy a residual position in the political field, sharing space with other small groups from the real Left, new programmes adapted to neoliberal advancement in the region and the new mobilizations symbolized by the uprisings of 2010-2011. The first section of the book presents the evolution of the CPs in Iran, Turkey, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and Israel, Egypt, South Yemen, Sudan, Algeria and Morocco. The second section explores some cross-cutting issues that have affected relations between the communist parties and other political sectors: political Islam and the New Left. Through the testimony of some leading figures, it presents the arguments around the question of gender in the Arab world and in leftist circles as well as an example of the evolution of a female leftist activist, some contradictions and the prominent debates from the most convulsive years to the present. |

In proposito la Conferenza generale dell’Unesco nel 1997 così si esprimeva “ ….. considerata l’importanza centrale della matematica e delle sue applicazioni nel mondo odierno nei riguardi della scienza, della tecnologia, delle comunicazioni, dell’economia e di numerosi altri campi; consapevole che la matematica ha profonde radici in molte culture e che i più importanti pensatori per migliaia di anni hanno portato contributi significativi al suo sviluppo, e che il linguaggio e i valori della matematica sono universali e in quanto tali ideali per incoraggiare e realizzare la cooperazione internazionale; si sottolinea il ruolo chiave dell’educazione matematica, in particolare al livello della scuola primaria e secondaria sia per la comprensione dei concetti matematici sia per lo sviluppo del pensiero razionale”. Assodata questa importanza il problema è la costruzione di un curricolo di matematica e di una metodologia di insegnamento adatti allo scopo, in relazione all’attuale momento storico, considerato che l’apprendimento è influenzato dal contesto di vita e dai conseguenti risvolti psicologici. E’ fuor di dubbio che in questo curricolo devono essere presenti i pilastri del pensiero matematico come oggi appare, ovvero sia la funzione strumentale della matematica che quella culturale, la prima è strumento essenziale per una comprensione quantitativa della realtà, la seconda è sapere logicamente coerente e sistematico, caratterizzato da una forte unità culturale. D’altra parte entrambe queste funzionalità sono state presenti in ogni epoca sociale se pure con accentuazioni diverse. Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) nel suo “Saggiatore” ebbe a scrivere: “…la filosofia è scritta in questo grandissimo libro che continuamente ci sta aperto innanzi a gli occhi (io dico l’universo), ma non si può intendere se prima non s’impara a intendere la lingua e conoscere i caratteri, né quali è scritto. Egli è scritto in lingua matematica, e i caratteri son triangoli, cerchi ed altre figure geometriche, senza i quali mezzi è impossibile a intendere umanamente parola; senza questi è un aggirarsi vanamente per un oscuro labirinto..” da cui emergono entrambe le peculiarità di cui sopra. |
| convergenze parallele: The Problem of Democracy in Postwar Europe Pepijn Corduwener, 2016-08-25 The current perception of democratic crisis in Western Europe gives a renewed urgency to a new perspective on the way democracy was reconstructed after World War II and the principles that underpinned its postwar transformation. This study accounts for the formation of the postwar democratic order in Western Europe by studying how the main political actors in France, West Germany and Italy conceptualized democracy and strove over its meaning. Based upon a wide range of librarian and archival sources from these countries, it tracks changing conceptions of democracy among leading politicians, political parties, and leaders of social movements, and unveils how they were deeply divided over key principles of postwar democracy – such as the political party, the free market economy, representation, and civic participation. By comparing three national debates on the question what democracy meant and how it should be institutionalized and practiced, this study argues that only in the 1970s conceptions of democracy converged and key political actors accepted each other as democrats with similar conceptions of democracy. This study thereby deconstructs the myth of the quick emergence of one consensual Western European model of democracy after 1945, demonstrates that its formation was a long and contentious process in which national differences were often of crucial importance, and contributes to an enhanced understanding of the historical roots of the current sentiment of democratic crisis. |

Ma è ancora più probabile che, senza la svolta di Togliatti, comunista, o almeno comunista a tempo pieno, non sarebbe diventato mai. A Napoli, durante la guerra, le sue prime passioni di giovane antifascista sono il cinema, il teatro, la letteratura, la poesia, la musica, vissute, al liceo Umberto e all'università, con molti ragazzi che si faranno strada, da Raffaele La Capria a Giuseppe Patroni Griffi, da Rosellina Balbi ad Antonio Ghirelli. Ma la sua via all'antifascismo e al Pci passa anche per la scoperta dell'umanità dolente del ricovero antiaereo scavato davanti alla casa borghese della sua famiglia, sotto Palazzo Serra di Cassano, dove, per sfuggire a bombardamenti feroci, la povera gente dei bassi e del Pallonetto Santa Lucia si mescola con i signori dei piani alti. È in quel rifugio che Napolitano si scopre per la prima volta in grado di reagire persino agli eventi più drammatici con grande autocontrollo e ragionevole fatalismo, dimostrandosi capace di non perdere la calma neppure di fronte all'Apocalisse, come gli riconosce, sorpreso e ammirato, Curzio Malaparte. È una virtù innata, ma anche molto coltivata, che praticherà per tutta la vita. Prima nel Pci, dove sin dai suoi primi passi in politica avrà per maestro Giorgio Amendola. Poi in Europa e nelle istituzioni, da presidente della Camera e soprattutto da capo dello Stato. In queste pagine Paolo Franchi, che lo conosce sin da quando nei primi anni Settanta era un dirigente della gioventù comunista, racconta la profonda vocazione politica che ha condotto Napolitano a condividere e indirizzare il travaglio del suo partito, diventando un esempio indiscusso di autorità morale, anche nella crisi economica e istituzionale che stiamo attraversando. |

Sono sette i giorni della creazione e i bracci della Menorah, uno dei simboli principali del mondo ebraico. | convergenze parallele: Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Parliamentary Discourse Paul Bayley, 2004-02-26 The activity of parliaments is largely linguistic activity: they produce talk and they produce texts. Broadly speaking, the objectives that this discourse aims to satisfy are similar all over the world: to legitimate or contest legislation, to represent diverse interests, to scrutinise the activity of government, to influence opinion and to recruit and promote political actors. But the discourse of different national parliaments is subject to variation, at all linguistic levels, on the basis of history, cultural specificity, and political culture in particular. Through the use of various analytical tools of functional linguistics, this volume seeks to provide explanatory analyses of parliamentary discourse in different countries – Britain, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Sweden and the United States – and to explore its peculiarities. | convergenze parallele: Evaluating Counterterrorism Performance Beatrice de Graaf, 2011-08-22 This book offers a new model for measuring the success and impact of counterterrorism strategies, using four comparative historical case studies. The effectiveness of counterterrorism measures is hard to assess, especially since the social impact of terrorist attacks is a fundamental and complex issue. This book focuses on the impact of counterterrorist measures by introducing the concept of the performative power of counterterrorism: the extent to which governments mobilize public and political support - thereby sometimes even unwittingly assisting terrorists in creating social drama. The concept is applied to counterterrorism in the Netherlands, Italy, the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States in the 1970s. Based on in-depth case study research using new primary sources and interviews with counterterrorist officials and radicals, a correlation is established between a low level of performative power and a decline of terrorist incidents. This is explored in terms of the link between social drama (as enhanced by counterterrorist measures) and ongoing radicalization processes. This book demonstrates that an increase in visible and intrusive counterterrorist measures does not automatically lead to a more effective form of counterterrorism. In the open democracies of the west, not transforming counterterrorism into a performance of power and repression is at least as important as counterterrorism measures themselves. This book will be of much interest to students of terrorism and counter-terrorism, discourse analysis, media and communication studies, conflict studies and IR/Security Studies in general. |

Military occupation represents the highest degree of political, social and economic control over an occupied state and its society. This collective book analyses how the three poles of Axis rule—Nazi Germany, Italian Fascism and Authoritarian Japan—lead the dynamics of institution-building of political regimes of occupation under their direct or indirect control. The contributions examine how the ideological, political and economic relationship between the occupying forces and different segments of national and local elites were present in the institutional crafting of new regimes. Military occupation opened a window of opportunity for the takeover of power by different segments of these authoritarian elites and the tension and forced pacts between different projects of institutionalization of dictatorships were a clear sign of this dynamic process.
