david raccis: Contemporary Italian Narrative and 1970s Terrorism David Ward, 2017-02-13 This book is about literary representations of the both left- and right-wing Italian terrorism of the 1970s by contemporary Italian authors. In offering detailed analyses of the many contemporary novels that have terrorism in either their foreground or background, it offers a “take” on postmodern narrative practices that is alternative to and more positive than the highly critical assessment of Italian postmodernism that has characterized some sectors of current Italian literary criticism. It explores how contemporary Italian writers have developed narrative strategies that enable them to represent the fraught experience of Italian terrorism in the 1970s. In its conclusions, the book suggests that to meet the challenge of representation posed by terrorism fiction rather than fact is the writer’s best friend and most effective tool.
david raccis: Incarceration and Regime Change Christian G. De Vito, Ralf Futselaar, Helen Grevers, 2016-10-01 Political instability is nearly always accompanied by fuller prisons, and this was particularly true during the “long” Second World War, when military mobilization, social disorder, wrenching political changes, and shifting national boundaries swelled the ranks of the imprisoned and broadened the carceral reach of the state. This volume brings together theoretically sophisticated, empirically rich studies of key transitional moments that transformed the scope and nature of European prisons during and after the war. It depicts the complex interactions of both penal and administrative institutions with the men and women who experienced internment, imprisonment, and detention at a time when these categories were in perpetual flux.
david raccis: Synthetic Methods in Drug Discovery David C Blakemore, Paul M Doyle, Yvette M Fobian, 2016-07-15 Building on key reactions presented in Volume 1, Synthetic Methods in Drug Discovery Volume 2 covers a range of important reaction types including organometallic chemistry, fluorination approaches and asymmetric methods as well as new and exciting areas such as Csp2-Csp3 couplings, catalytic amide bond forming reactions, hydrogen borrowing chemistry and methods to access novel motifs and monomers. This book provides both academic and industrial perspectives on key reactions giving the reader an excellent overview of the techniques used in modern synthesis. Reaction types are conveniently framed in the context of their value to industry and the challenges and limitations of methodologies are discussed with relevant illustrative examples. Moreover, key opportunities in expanding chemical space are presented, including the increasingly important syntheses that introduce three-dimensional molecular shape. Edited and authored by leading scientists from both academia and industry, this book will be a valuable reference for all chemists involved in drug discovery as well as postgraduate students in medicinal chemistry.
david raccis: Assistive Technology Assessment Handbook Stefano Federici, Marcia Scherer, 2017-11-23 Assistive Technology Assessment Handbook, Second Edition, proposes an international ideal model for the assistive technology assessment process, outlining how this model can be applied in practice to re-conceptualize the phases of an assistive technology delivery system according to the biopsychosocial model of disability. The model provides reference guidelines for evidence-based practice, guiding both public and private centers that wish to compare, evaluate, and improve their ability to match a person with the correct technology model. This second edition also offers a contribution to the Global Cooperation on Assistive Technology (GATE) initiative, whose activities are strongly focused on the assistive products service delivery model. Organized into three parts, the handbook: gives readers a toolkit for performing assessments; describes the roles of the assessment team members, among them the new profession of psychotechnologist; and reviews technologies for rehabilitation and independent living, including brain–computer interfaces, exoskeletons, and technologies for music therapy. Edited by Stefano Federici and Marcia J. Scherer, this cross-cultural handbook includes contributions from leading experts across five continents, offering a framework for future practice and research.

david raccis: 1941: The Year Germany Lost the War Andrew Nagorski, 2020-08-04 Bestselling historian Andrew Nagorski “brings keen psychological insights into the world leaders involved” (Booklist) during 1941, the critical year in World War II when Hitler’s miscalculations and policy of terror propelled Churchill, FDR, and Stalin into a powerful new alliance that defeated Nazi Germany. In early 1941, Hitler’s armies ruled most of Europe. Churchill’s Britain was an isolated holdout against the Nazi tide, but German bombers were attacking its cities and German U-boats were attacking its ships. Stalin was observing the terms of the Nazi-Soviet Pact, and Roosevelt was vowing to keep the United States out of the war. Hitler was confident that his aim of total victory was within reach. But by the end of 1941, all that changed. Hitler had repeatedly gambled on escalation and lost: by invading the Soviet Union and committing a series of disastrous military blunders; by making mass murder and terror his weapons of choice, and by rushing to declare war on the United States after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. Britain emerged with two powerful new allies—Russia and the United States. By then, Germany was doomed to defeat. Nagorski illuminates the actions of the major characters of this pivotal year as never before. 1941: The Year Germany Lost the War is a stunning and “entertaining” (The Wall Street Journal) examination of unbridled megalomania versus determined leadership. It also reveals how 1941 set the Holocaust in motion, and presaged the postwar division of Europe, triggering the Cold War. 1941 was “the year that shaped not only the conflict of the hour but the course of our lives—even now” (New York Times bestselling author Jon Meacham).

david raccis: Molecular Structures and Dimensions O. Kennard, D.G. Watson, Frank H. Allen, S.A. Bellard, 2013-04-17 This volume is the fourteenth classified bibliography of organic, organometallic and metal complex crystal structures prepared by the Cambridge Crystallo graphic Data Centre and published jointly with the International Union of Crystallography. The previous thirteen volumes covered the years 1935-81; the majority of references in the present volume pertain to structure analyses reported in the literature during 1981 and 1982. A few structures reported prior to 1981 and omitted in earlier volumes are also included. Volume 14 contains 4094 references to 4001 distinct chemical compounds with 2162 cross-references. Some 90% of these references were obtained by direct in-house scanning of 51 major journals; the remaining material was located by searching Chemical Abstracts and Bulletin Signa/etique. The table below summarizes the cut-off dates for the 25 direct-scan journals yielding most entries in Volume 14. The fully classified Chemical Diagram Index, first presented in Volume 13, is continued here. Volume 14 contains 3912 chemical structural diagrams, repre senting 98% of the compounds. The reasons for the omission of some diagrams are noted in the Introduction. This new index provides a rapid visual overview of compounds studied in 1981-82 and will, we hope, add greatly to the usefulness of the annual Bibliographies. The textual indexes in Volume 14 continue the system established in Volumes 9-13 and in the special volume Guide to the Literature 1935-76. The latter volume presents a set of cumulative indexes to the contents of Bibliographic Volumes 1-8.

david raccis: Calpurnia Anne Scott, 2003 An elegant debut novel about a once grand Philadelphia mansion called Calpurnia; its owner, a painter and pa- trician matriarch who has recently died under mysterious circumstances; and the woman over-seeing the disposal of the estate, who unravels the secrets and intrigues hidden away in the hundred-year-old house. Elizabeth Oliver arrives at Calpurnia to manage the sale but soon finds herself piecing together the mysterious life of Maribel Archibald Davies and her heirs: the prodigal, tennis-playing heir apparent; the fashionable niece, designated as the estate's executor; the loyal neighbor and keeper of the Maribel Davies flame; Davies's heartbroken longtime lover; and the famous portraitist with whom Davies had an affair-become-scandal. Each of them makes one last visit to Calpurnia, and with each arrival, Elizabeth is drawn further into the family's intrigues and mysteries, and closer to a revelation of its secrets. Combining a contemporary sensibility with a rich, timeless gift for storytelling, Anne Scott has given us a classic, uniquely imagined tale of suspense.

Reference to a single discourse – that of postmodernism – no longer suffices as a means to sum up the contemporary Italian book market. Rather, we see a renewed tendency towards literary realism, that is to say 'serious' literature that aspires to represent and criticize a current extratextual world by narrating factual events or plausible occurrences. However, realistic literature is literature nonetheless and, by that token, art; it can take on metaphorical, symbolist or self-referential character in order to optimise strategies of depiction, achieve new insights or give voice to poetological problems. This study analyses the different manifestations of these tendencies on the basis of examples drawn from the works of Ammaniti, Desiati and Saviano.
david raccis: The Good Brother Chris Offutt, 2016-02-16 From the critically acclaimed author of the collection Kentucky Straight and memoir My Father the Pornographer, The Good Brother is the finely crafted debut novel from a talent the New York Times calls “a fierce writer”. Virgil Caudill has never gone looking for trouble, but this time he's got no choice—his hell-raising brother Boyd has been murdered. Everyone knows who did it, and in the hills of Kentucky, tradition won’t let a murder go unavenged. No matter which way he chooses, Virgil will lose. The Good Brother is the story of a man’s struggle to find his real self in the wake of an impossible choice. Traversing the American landscape from the hollows of Eastern Kentucky to the plains of Montana, Offutt explores the hunger for belonging that drives our most passionate beliefs, and in the process shows himself to be one of our most powerful storytellers.

david raccis: Titian to Tiepolo Gilberto Algranti, 2002 This book is a panoramic view of the richest 300 years of Italian art: the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, which saw the creation of a constellation of masterpieces of painting and sculpture that has influenced art history for generations. The 1500s saw the era of the great Renaissance masters da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo, as well as the innovators of the mannerist style, del Sarto and Pontormo, and brilliant painters from the Venetian school including Giorgione, Titian, and Lotto. The northern artistic schools arose in the 1600s, led by Carracci, Reni, Guercino, and Domenichino. Included here are works by the revolutionary Caravaggio. Papal Rome is well represented by Bernini and Pietro da Cortona. The 1700s feature landscape artists including Canaletto, Bellotto, and Guardi, and from the Rococo period, Tiepolo and Gandolfi with sculptures by Canova and Giani.
