dateline stranger than fiction: A brush with Mr. Naipaul Suresh Subrahmanyan, 2018-11-13 Suresh Subrahmanyan draws freely from his life experiences to present this compendium of acutely observed columns. His métier, humour and satire, and his abiding love for the English language, resonate on every page. He delves nostalgically into his childhood, ruminating on, among other things, boarding school escapades and a wide spectrum of music that saturates his life. He paints a vivid portrait of India’s contrariness with a light brush, warts and all. Politics, sport, the arts, current affairs and selective autobiography – they are all grist to the author’s mill. As he himself says, ‘I write for fun. If the reader is amused, it’s a bonus’. Suresh Subrahmanyan is refreshingly different from others of his ilk. He is known for his eclectic tastes, partial to wit and satire, a cricket tragic (in Aussie parlance) and an aficionado of music of varied genres. Small wonder that he has been a regular columnist in leading newspapers. His writings, covering a wide range of subjects, come as a breath of fresh air. This delightfully humorous collection of his choicest columns, impeccably written, will lift the reader’s spirits. N. Murali Chairman, Kasturi and Sons Ltd (Holding company of The Hindu Group) and President, The Music Academy

dateline stranger than fiction: My Hero Tom Holt, 2012-09-04 An Australian novelist gets a little too caught up in her work in this humorous fantasy from the award-winning author of The Portable Door. This is the story of Jane who finds the novel she is working on starts to write back. She’s already realized novel writing isn’t such a piece of cake after all, and the world of fiction is a far more complicated place than she ever imagined . . . Perfect for fans of Douglas Adams or Terry Pratchett
dateline stranger than fiction: Journeys Sam George Arcus, 2002-02-13 All of the stories in this volume are free-standing short stories. Stories I through VIII, however, can be regarded as sequels to the authors previous work, DEJA VIEWS OF AN AGING ORPHAN since they pick up on many characters and themes first introduced in that book and deal with the trials and tribulations of the Arcus/Erkes family, both in the Old Country and in America. The central plot and theme involving Nochem, Bashya and her children, Nochems sister Sonia, Mollie and her children, is told from various perspectives and points of view--not unlike the famous Japanes story RASHOMON. The remaining stories are rooted in the United States, albeit in different cities as the author and his family move from one community to another as he climbs the ladder of greater responsibilities and rewards within the social work and communal service field. While all of the stories are based on actual events and real people, some fiction was required to fill gaps and round out the stories. For example, details surrounding Nochems sustaining two life-threatening wounds during the Russo-Japanese War of 1905 and Bashya and her childrens eleven months odyssey from Odessa, Ukraine to Nesvizh, Poland! Wars (civil and world), pogroms, Displaced Persons Camps, bigamy, suicide and institutionalization are some of the events experienced by the books characters--not too dissimilar to those in DR. ZHIVAGO. In any event, each story can be perceived as a Journey--actual or figurative--with some of the Journeys in America providing some rare insights into the eleemosynary world of community centers and capital fund-raising.

The author argues for the inclusion of controversial books in order to teach children to discover and debate values that are inconsistent with their own, rather than eliminating exposure to sensitive subjects.

dateline stranger than fiction: The Barbie Chronicles Yona Zeldis McDonough, 2011-01-11 A fascinating and poignant collection of twenty essays and five poems exploring Barbie's forty years of hateful, lovely, disastrous, glorious influence on us all from award-winning authors such as Jane Smiley, Meg Wolitzer, and Carol Shields. To some she's a collectible, to others she's trash. Since her creation in 1959 by Ruth Handler, Barbie has become a worldwide icon and an extremely divisive topic. To some she represents an inspiration to young girls, to others she has only wreaked havoc on feminist progress. No other tiny shoulders have ever had to carry the weight of such affection and derision, and no other book has ever paid this notorious little place of plastic her due. The twenty-three authors who contributed to this book—including Meg Wolitzer, Jane Smiley, Carol Shields, Anna Quindlen, and Ann duCille—explore how Barbie has affected their lives, and delve into the numerous controversies Barbie has faced over past decades and the complex issues of race and conformity in the toy industry. Whether you adore her or abhor her, The Barbie Chronicles will have you looking at her in ways you never imagined.

dateline stranger than fiction: Allow Me to Retort Elie Mystal, 2023-05-09 Finalist, ABA Silver Gavel Award for Books The New York Times bestseller that has cemented Elie Mystal’s reputation as one of our sharpest and most acerbic legal minds “After reading Allow Me to Retort, I want Elie Mystal to explain everything I don’t understand—quantum astrophysics, the infield fly rule, why people think Bob Dylan is a good singer . . .” —Michael Harriot, The Root Allow Me to Retort is an easily digestible argument about what rights we have, what rights Republicans are trying to take away, and how to stop them. Mystal explains how to protect the rights of women and people of color instead of cowering to the absolutism of gun owners and bigots. He explains the legal way to stop everything from police brutality to political gerrymandering, just by changing a few judges and justices. He strips out all of the fancy jargon conservatives like to hide behind and lays bare the truth of their project to keep America forever tethered to its slaveholding past. Mystal brings his trademark humor, expertise, and rhetorical flair to explain concepts like substantive due process and the right for the LGBTQ community to buy a cake, and to arm readers with the knowledge to defend themselves against conservatives who want everybody to live under the yoke of eighteenth-century white men. The same tactics Mystal uses to defend the idea of a fair and equal society on MSNBC and CNN are in this book, for anybody who wants to deploy them on social media. You don’t need to be a legal scholar to understand your own rights. You don’t need to accept the “whites only” theory of equality pushed by conservative judges. You can read this book to understand that the Constitution is trash, but doesn’t have to be.

dateline stranger than fiction: A Perfect Husband Aphrodite Jones, 2012-07-11 From a New York Times–bestselling author: A searing account of cold-blooded murder as told by “one of the chief practitioners of the true crime genre” (The Baltimore Sun). Michael Peterson was a decorated war veteran and bestselling novelist. His wife, Kathleen, was a high-powered executive and devoted mother. To everyone who knew them, they seemed to be the perfect couple living a life most people would kill for. Then came the tragic night Michael found Kathleen at the bottom of the stairs in a pool of blood. He claimed her death was an accident. The prosecution thought different and put him on trial—and behind bars. Then, in a stunning reversal, a judge gave Michael another chance to stand trial as his children steadfastly proclaimed his innocence. But what happened next would stun observers as new evidence and bizarre theories were introduced in a legal battle that would drag on until it became one of the longest trials in state history. Aphrodite Jones draws on exclusive interviews and revelatory facts to deliver “a richly detailed and deeply researched tale of a greedy, sociopathic killer” (Caitlin Rother, New York Times–bestselling author).

dateline stranger than fiction: A Twisted Faith Gregg Olsen, 2023-11-28 New York Times bestselling author Gregg Olsen investigates the sensational story of a minister who seduced four of his female congregants, and hatched a cold-blooded plot to murder his wife. On December 26, 1997, near the affluent community of Bainbridge Island off the coast of Seattle, a house went up in flames. In it was the shy, beloved minister's wife Dawn Hacheney. When the fire was extinguished, investigators found only her charred remains. Her husband Nick was visibly devastated by the loss. What investigators failed to note, however, was that Dawn's lungs didn't contain smoke. Was she dead before the fire began? So begins this true crime story that's unlike any other. It investigates Nick Hacheney, a philandering minister who had been carrying on with several women in the months before and just after his wife's death. He would be convicted for the murder five years to the day after the crime. From one of the foremost names in true crime, A Twisted Faith is a gripping and truly unforgettable story of a man whose charisma and desire rocked an entire community.
